I just got it, and while i'd like to say that i've played the game and enjoyed it thoroughly, one thing keeps me from doing so.

it doesn't work, dammit.

the game starts out fine, playing the intro movies, but then it gets to the title screen, all i get is a big black screen and some midi music.

patched it, tried running with compability mode on. ..no dice. Google turns up nothing .

Has anyone of you 40k'ers had this problem? let me know how to fix it.

I've had this problem as well. No idea how to fix it

I had a similar problem. On my new Win XP system the game would run fine until the computer took it's first turn then it would crash to the desktop. I tried lots of different compatability settings but nothing worked. In the end I had to set up my old Win 98 system and play it on that.

maybe there's a way to force it to run on windowed mode?

EDIT

okay, i feel like an idiot now

turns out that Chaos gate automatically tries to log on to a DNS server jsut before loading the title screen, and my firewall blocked it, causing everything to go tits up.

a quick alt-tab before everything went wrong revealed the culprit.

you may lock this thread, now.

MORE EDITING

and now Travos' bug is my bug. Yay.

I hate windows XP.

sorry for the triple post there, but it looks like the crash to desktop bug happens whenever a Chaos Cultist gets within attacking distance during its turn. Weird little bug, but it's possible to play through the game so long as you immediately kill a cultist as soon as you see him.

Still, it's utterly ridiculous.

Never seen that, but there are a miriad of CTDs

note - if you go back to a save after a crash, do things DIFFERENTLY. its weird, but if you make all the same moves, crash will re-occur, do it differently, and crash will not..

thought that too, but this bug occurs EVERYTIME a cultist gets too close.

Ok, Ignus is definitely correct. Everytime a chaos cultist gets close enough to shoot, the next thing I see is the desk top. I had the urge to play around with the settings again and I seem to have found that I have to have my sound card hardware acceleration set to "none" in order to even enter combat. Any hardware acceleration and the game freezes when I click on the door to enter combat. I have the Creative SB Live! Series with updated drivers if that may be significant. I don't know... could this be an issue with the sound in the game? Whatever the problem is microsoft got about 20 error reports this afternoon :)

found a little patch that fixes the problem. Thing is, it doesn't fix as much stuff as the 1.2 patch, but hey: it works!

funny story: hyperian used the patch i was talking about, and it doesn't seem to have fixed the cultist crash bug for him.

Man, the mysteries of Windows.

I figured out a way to fix the "cultist crash bug" , well its not really a fix, more like a edit.

Basically I used the editor to remove the Cultists' from the maps.

It's quite simple to do, just run the editor and open the campaign maps, locate all the Cultists', right click and chose delete, then click yes on the pop-up.

After you have removed the Cultists' you can add some more Chaos Marines to even the maps out again.

Now when you choose save an error message might pop-up, to remedy that go into Windows Explorer, or My Computer, find the maps directory (Usually C:\Program Files\RandomGames\Chaos Gate\Maps) , right click on the map file, click Properties and un-tick the Read Only box.

This will allow you to play Chaos Gate flwlesly on an Win2K-WinXP system, although without the cultists', but they were pathetic and not much of a challenge anyway. Enjoy! :D
