Frequently Asked Questions
This section provides the answers to some of the basic questions about the game.
1. What are the different game versions?
Q. I bought this awesome game called Company of Heroes and now I get here and people are talking about CoH, OF, TOV, vCOH, Opposing Fronts, Tales of Valor. What’s that all about?
A. There are three different versions of the game; the original Company of Heroes, Company of Heroes Opposing Fronts, and Company of Heroes Tales of Valor. COH is an abbreviation of Company of Heroes and is used when discussing things that aren’t specifically about one version. Original COH, sometimes called vanilla COH or vCOH, is the original game, released in 2006. Opposing Fronts, OF, is an expansion pack that was released in 2007. Tales of Valor, TOV, is an expansion pack that was released in 2009.
Q. Expansion pack? Does that mean I need to buy the original game or it won’t work?
A. No, not unless you want all of the armies, units, and single-player campaigns. Each version is playable on its own or in any combination of the three. You can play multi-player against people with different versions of the game as long as everybody in the game is at the same patch level (don’t worry, we’ll talk about patch levels later).
Q. What about these other things people talk about like the Gold edition and the Anthology?
A. They are different compilation packs that were sold at different times. The three most common are the Game Of The Year edition (GOTY), Gold edition, and the CoH Anthology. The GOTY edition came out first and contained the original CoH with some extra maps that came with a patch to the original game. The Gold edition contained both the original CoH and Opposing Fronts. The Anthology is the latest compilation on sale, and has all three versions of the game, CoH, Opposing Fronts, and Tales of Valor.
2. All these patches, I’m confused?
Q. I tried to start the game and it wants to download a patch. What’s that all about?
A. Welcome to the world of confusion that is CoH patches. Because Relic wants to allow everybody to play multiplayer regardless of which version of the game they own, they have released a whole lot of patches so everybody is at the same level.
Q. So why not just give us one big patch with everything in it?
A. That’s not as easy as it sounds. It’s because there are so many different versions of the game and they all start at different patch numbers. There is a sticky thread (http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=108081) in the Technical Assistance forum that explains the different patches and where to find them.

Member-created Guides
Some of our members have put a lot of time and effort into creating guides to different aspects of the game and have posted them on the forums to help others. We appreciate the time and hard work they put into the guides, but they do belong to the members who created them. Relicnews forum staff aren’t going to make changes to the guides, and we may not be able to answer questions about them. This section has links to forum threads about some of the guides we think are pretty cool and useful. If anybody has suggestions for other guides that deserve mention, please PM one of the CoH section moderators and we’ll look at them.
