View Full Version : TF2 Competition Style Meet-up

From the TF2 thread, I found that a few people were interested in trying out TF2 in a more competitive style. So, let's try to get this set up sometime in the near future.

For now, just post in here if you're interested in participating.

The conventional set up would be a 6v6, which would allow us to have a nice 12 player match, but there are other formats that can allow us to include even more players. One interesting format is Highlander play: There can only be one! Of each class that is. That would allow us to organize up to a 9v9, but the class restrictions would be a little tighter. And there's also experimenting with different team sizes and class restrictions. We'll probably be able to arrange something to include all interested players.

So, who's up for it?

Edit:

Highlander it is. We need 18 people. Bring a microphone and a good attitude.

I can set up the CEVO competition settings on the server, and I might be interested in some competitive TF2.

What defines competition style, exactly? Just the numbers?

I'd definitely like to try this. Sounds fun.

The maps are different from the most popular pub servers.

There are no crits without a kritzkrieg, because a player death is more significant in this type of match, and the random element is actually significant enough that rounds can be decided by lucky crits.

The damage of weapons in vanilla TF2 has a random element to it. Weapons are configured so that they always do their average amount of damage. This makes them more consistent, again, removing a random element that can affect the outcome of the game.

Classes are limited. For example, most configurations only allow 1 medic per team. This prevents the game degenerating into a brute-fest with lots of medics and lots of meaty classes.

The format of 'winning' is different. In CEVO, for CP maps, for example, you play a half for 30 minutes or 5 wins by a team (I forgot exactly how many wins, actually), and then you play another half of 30 minutes and the winner is the team with the most wins.. I think. It's been a while since I played in CEVO, but I'll look up the rules.

The respawn time is the same as in vanilla, which makes a big difference on small teams. The smaller teams also makes it so that coordination is very important. In a 6v6 match, a team that isn't working as a cohesive unit will lose almost instantly to a team with a proper sense of tactics and strategy.

Eh. Cheers for the explanation, but I'll pass.

Highlander-style sounds like fun, actually. I am in.
I can play Pyro, Spy, Heavy or Demoman with some degree of expertise.

I'm game.

What, you mean I can actually participate in a TF2 meetup with a focus on the actual playing of said game?

I'm so in.

@Trizzdog: What's wrong with the usual Sunday meets? Don't enjoy drunken batter combined with zany action!?

On a more serious note, I play TF2 casually but I'd be willing to try this out. Consider me signed up.

I'd prefer the 9 vs 9 thing (one of each class), as it would make each match very interesting and much more teamwork orientated. TF2 is played by so many RN folks so I don't think we'll have a problem.

If the attitude is anything like the CoH tournament I managed (in other words, friendly competition) then I will like this even more.

Edit: Favourite class is Spy, but willing to be Pyro and Engineer.

Soooo in for Highlander style. I can't make it this sunday or the next, though.

Well I'm not very good but I'd be up for it. As long as you tell us the time in advance, college is starting up again so I can't be playing at crazy hours..

Classwise I'd prefer Demoman, Medic, soldier or Pyro. I'm a complete failure at sniping and scouting..

I guess the class allocation will be on a first-come-first-served basis?

Black

First I will create teams. It seems that we may have 3 or more, which is phenomenal. After that, it will be up to the teams to decide how they work together.

But before that happens, I'll make another thread for people to post their class preferences, so that I can make teams with the least amount of conflict.

A lot of this will be learning to work as a team with people you haven't played seriously together with before. Teams will have to decide on their command structure, strategies, etc. before the day of the match. I intend for this to be sometime into the future so that such preparation is possible for the teams.

I'm in.

I play TF2 under the name Drunk-Side Jedi. I can play either Heavy, Medic, Pyro, Soldier, or Engineer. Sniper's my second most played class but I'm pretty inconsistent with him, either I'll be chaining headshots like crazy or missing total cake shots left and right. If pressed I'll play scout. I hardly ever touch demo (which is odd because he was my best class in TFC, I guess I perfer the old rolling pipebombs to the new stickies). I'm also a failspy. So if you need a failspy I can fill that role.

Best class? Probably Heavy right now.

What gamemodes and maps are we thinking about? Cp? attack/defend? cart? ctf?

I will need to know the schedules. But I am in if I get a role for Soldier, Demoman and Medic...actually I might be very well suited for Medic play actually :D, its so relaxing and zen. ^^

hmm I wonder if dead ringer spy would be beneficial in highlander style... maybe yes because he can fake death?

if dead ringer spy doesn't work here, then I'll be pyro or soldier I guess (and never demoman, I just suck horribly as him).

I have very limited time so that might be a problem. However if you guys decide to play at a time I can play as well (generally weekends), then I'm in.

SDPTeam is my steam account, my current steam nickname is pinkmexican.

May I chip in?

I consider myself ok with all classes, altho I prefer playing as either the Demo, Heavy, Medic or Engie (in order)

I'm nearly always up for a game, whenever I'm on steam. I usually get around my comp after 4pm gmt+2, so at those times I'm game.

SteamID= secla

Will there be a competetive meet-up today at the time of the regular TF2 Sunday?

I'd like to improve my skills. I like playing as Pyro, Scout, Medic, Spy or Heavy. My favourite is obviously the Spy, but I put him at the end of the list, because I don't think I'm good enough to be the only one on my team. I have around 110 hours played total (the play time with all classes combined), so I'm fairly new.

I have a built-in mic (on a Logitech Digital Precision headset), and I hope it'll do its job. Is there a Vent or some other server set up for chat or do you use the in-game service?

Does anybody know how do you bind your talk toggle action to an extra mouse button (like the 4th or the 5th), if even possible?

Almost forgot; if someone wants to add me on Steam, they can find me under the name [Dolt] D-coy. My timezone is GMT + 2.

Cheers

Wouldn't it be a little counterproductive to have the competition meetup at exactly the same time as the normal one, considering that there's quite a bit of spillover between the two?

D-coy
13th Sep 09, 8:26 AM
I'm aware of that. However, the first one was at the same time, if I recall correctly. If not, then it's my bad. Just wanted to know when we'll meet. ;)

Black
13th Sep 09, 8:54 AM
Not today. Not for probably a month. When I get some time I'll finish organizing this. Sorry for the delay.

holyknight
13th Sep 09, 10:53 AM
Not for probably a month
that's a relief, because I'll be too busy these few months and I wouldn't want to miss any competitive meetings

Kryopsis

So am I. I am afraid I will be unable to dedicate myself to TF2 for the next several weeks.

D-coy

Yeah, school is starting, so the delay is okay Black, no problem with that. Just wanted to keep myself updated.

Cheers

There's been a bit of a hiatus so I assume most of us are busy with school (including me *gasp*)
