21st Jan 04, 4:14 PM
Here are all the engine trails I have released currently.
WATER TRAILS
http://dsholz.com/relicnews/Wt1.jpg
http://dsholz.com/relicnews/Wt2.jpg
These are the newest released trail that gives all ships a waterfall/water like trail, similar to the alpha trails but, it works on ALL SHIPS, including missiles.
Get it here (http://dsholz.com/relicnews/watertrailsV1.zip)
ALPHA TRAILS

http://dsholz.com/relicnews/ss00149.jpg
http://dsholz.com/relicnews/ss00153.jpg
This is a BETA version, it only changes the interceptor for the moment. However, this is a new kind of trail based on the style from the Pre-alpha version of Homeworld 2.
Get it here (http://dsholz.com/relicnews/AlphaTrailsV1a.zip)
PLASMA TRAILS
http://dsholz.com/relicnews/plasma.jpg
These change the trails of all the ships to a glassy plasma look.
Get it here (http://dsholz.com/relicnews/platrails.zip)
NO-TRAIL PATCH
http://dsholz.com/relicnews/ss00267.jpg
This patch turns off all ship trails and leaves a afterburner look (I did not make this afterburner look it is encoded in the game) However, the trails seem to show them selfs minorly if you zoom far out, it shouldn't be a problem.
Get it here (http://dsholz.com/relicnews/notrail.zip)
DustWars/Homeworld 1 Trails
This mod changes all the trails in the game, including missiles to a Homeworld 1 effect based off the DustWars trailers.
Get it here (http://dsholz.com/relicnews/hwtrailmod.zip)
Advanced Water Trails
http://dsholz.com/relicnews/ss00263.jpg
http://dsholz.com/relicnews/ss00264.jpg
This mod changes the interceptor trails to a new more advanced water trails effect.

I'm gonna have to say that the no-trail trail is my current favorite. :)

I rather like the plasma trail and the water trail, but the notrail has something to be said for it.

Does anyone else think that the water trails completely own the alpha ones?

God I can't imagine how the notrail one would be possible without nlips :p

If I'm not mistaken, he's released them so you can download them and play around with them on your own computer.

I just like knowing where my materials are going. So if you want to use it in a mod ask, pm me or something. Thats not asking much right?
I'm not going to hunt you down if you play around with the scripts or textures on your computer, just tell me if you want to release it.

Just extract the zip into your homeworld2/data folder
Hi everyone this is my first post. :)
Tefeari, I tried the Alpha trails, and they're simply amazing. They make watching battles so much better. Great job.
Are you planning to add engine trails to capital ships (like in the Dust Wars trailer)? Is it even possible? (I don't know anything about modding.)
Tefeari
25th Jan 04, 10:18 AM
It depends on the ship. Check out my thread in the Mods in Progress forum (Here http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21201 ) For developmental screenshots and such.
I have some of capital ship trails in there. And I'm trying to get a carrier with trails released soon.

Hey guys, the trails look great, I just can't decide! I really like the no-trails but as someone who plays with NLIPS off that's just inviting disaster :)
Any word on when the Alpha trails will be fully completed? I was thinking of using the Alpha's for my strike craft and frigates (is this possible?) and the water trails on all missiles.
Tefeari
25th Jan 04, 12:12 PM
Are you making the strike craft and frigates? If so, yes you could use them, you'd just have to talk to me first so I could tell you how to make the hardpoints support them (The hardpoints have to be a certain way for it to work). If you mean regular Homeworld 2 ships, the only other ship I can add the Alpha trails to right now is the Hig Assault/multigun Corvette (whatever it's called). I might release a new version of the alpha trails with that ship supported.

I keep reading in here and it is really amazing what you guys develop here!
So I guess its my stupidity that doesn't make this mod run. I extracted the files into the data folder, but nothing will change. I should add that before this there was nothing but the Animatics-Folder and the known *.big files in the data directory.
Forgot to mention that no mod files (of whatever mod) I extract into the data folder will work. Got the german version, btw. But this isn't it, I guess.
What am I overlooking?
Guess I make a fool of myself now... :murph:

Ok I need help here :(
I didnt get the chance to over ruide because I messed the shortcut thing up. Then i had to use goback and go back in time in my comp so i could restore it. it was faster than reinstalling the game.
Is there a possible self instaler for the mods ?
If i override anything i am sure i will do some unrepairable damage somewhere :(
Tefeari
29th Feb 04, 8:20 AM
For some reason the Installer in the RDN package doesn't work for me. So no, there is no installer, but, luckly, its not that hard. All you do is unzip that zip. Then make that shortcut. IF YOU MAKE IT A SHORTCUT, messing it up will do NO HARM to your game. O_o

Tefeari

Thanks... Um.. I never released that 15 badge, I guess I could, I'll upload it to my server later. Its not quite perfect though, thats why I never released it.
Yea, Tel, I still have to get those modified frigates.

Is this a client patch? Wait, thats a bad choice of words. Is it a gameplay modification, i.e. in MP, do both people need it for the game not to synch?

14th Mar 04, 6:15 PM
If the texture is changed to a ROT it might not be needed on both sides, however, I am unsure. Though elsewise, yes both sides need it.

The water trails are my personal favourite. :-)
Is there any detailed knowledge on how these trails affect framerate?
Tefeari
16th Mar 04, 3:58 PM
All the trails but the Alpha and Adv. Water trails take pretty much the same cpusage as regular trails. The Alpha trails take about 33-50% more cpu.

Leonides
22nd Mar 04, 12:35 AM
I installed the "no trails" mod exactly as described, but nothing happened. I have another mod installed (the Point Defense one), could this be the reason why?
Tefeari
22nd Mar 04, 8:41 AM
I am unsure, it should work if you did it right, the no trails mod are just 2 rots in the effect/trails/ folder.
Leonides
23rd Mar 04, 1:10 PM
Ah... it DID work, but all the interceptors still have them, while no other ship does. Strange.
Tefeari
23rd Mar 04, 3:37 PM
Thats because the interceptors use a different graphic file thats not overriden by that ROT.
The Interceptor trails are my Alpha trails.
Leonides
24th Mar 04, 10:37 AM
Roger that. Thanks for your help and for the mod!

Overwrite the interceptor from the Plasma trail with the alpha trail.

OK dudes i tried out a couple of these in single and in multi and they work the opponent being able to see them my question for some reason on my screen when i zoom in on the ships they tend to change colours for example i had yellow chosen but when i zoom in the trails changed to red just wondering how to fix this please?
Also for the creator of these great mini mods :) can you make something to change the ion beams to red or pink as seen in the original screenies before hw2 was released?
Tefeari

They have a mod for different ion beam colors already. Also, what trails are you saying this problem on?

can you give the url for the ion beam and im having troubles with the water and alpha trails
Tefeari
10th Apr 04, 6:46 AM
There should be nothing wrong with colors if you installed it properly. Try reinstalling them. That sounds more like something with your videocard rendering differently.
Hey Tefeari, you seem to be the most knowledgeable and experienced with trials so considering I dont have excel, or the ability to get it. Could you perhaps explain the numbers next the the trail file name if you know what they do
see below example:
setEngineTrail(NewShipType,0,2,"trail_ribbon3.tga",0.1,0.5,0.025,6)
I would really like to know what they do (I think they might control how the trail looks in the game) but have not seen info in the wakiki so if you know could you tell me?
Tefeari
10th Apr 04, 2:58 PM
Open up the ship spreadsheet in the RDN packet, next to each number it pretty much tells you.

Tefeari
15th Apr 04, 7:47 AM
Thats in the .ship file, just change the build value and time back to its original, I'll release a version of that sometime but you'll have to wait, its not a bug, its how I test it.

When I try to use the Dustwars/Homeworld 1 trail engine mod, it only does 1 trail good, not the 2nd trail. So at my higgy interceptors for example I get one beam that's the default HW2 engine trail and your mod engine trail.
Any idea why this doesn't work fully like on the pictures?
Thanks in advance,

Was there a simple way to get the Alpha trails to work for all class of fighters, as well as the corvettes? I see that they currently only work for interceptors, so just checking thx

And I only have trails on two big ships, none others, it wouldn't be much of a release.

Ah, thought about this a few nights ago:
Are you able to create new textures for hyperspace windows? If possible, I would like a more intense looking hyperspace effect. Basically much more white light in hyper transition.
Tefeari
14th Feb 05, 6:24 AM
Actually, the hyperspace effect is a combination of things (though this isn't engine trails I did a lot of experimentation with it :P ).
The hyperspace effect is first a general FX file but it also has several external textures which you can modify at your discretion. Though with these, you can't do much more then change the color and slightly the texture of the hyperspace window.
What I thought was cool for more dynamic effects, was to completely replace the HW2 hyperspace FX with another. One example would be the plasma explosion/flash effect as use as a hyperspace animation. You see a FLASH and when it’s gone, the ship is there.
I'm not entirely sure what you have in mind though?

Well, I must be an idiot or something, but I extracted the notrail.zip in my Data folder (meaning that flare.rot and trail_ribbon.rot are now in the Data folder) and then tried everything I could think of on the shortcut (-flare.rot ...etc). I just can't get this to work. What is the exact command I use for the notrail mod? I can do .big files, but these .rot's are throwing me for a loop. Thanks

Try -overrideBigFile
Also those files shall be placed in their respective folders, not just in Data's root.

Ok, so that's probably my problem: what are the "respective folders"? I had already tried looking for a folder containing those type of files but I didn't find one.

What are you trying to extract the zip with? If its winzip try highlighting the files and pressing "Extract to" and selecting the Data folder.
"Extract to" generally does it for any program, because it then extracts the zip to the specified folder with all files in their specified further positions.

20th Nov 05, 7:37 PM
It depends on the trail, the alpha trails and advanced water trails can only be done on the interceptors because they require a modified number of engine hardpoints, the rest are already set to work on all the ships.
If you want to know the required file names try downloading the water trails and looking at the names I used.
:hi: how long till the alpha trails work for every thing?
Tefeari
7th Jan 06, 10:05 PM
They won't sorry, it would take too much hardpoint work to do without Hwse2 and no one offered to help out on it.
Lame :( why dont no one help him?
Sastrei
8th Jan 06, 8:39 PM
Probably because as he said, it's vastly too difficult without a HWSE2 style program. Is it even possible at all to add engine trails to a hod?

Tefeari
9th Jan 06, 3:35 PM
Yea it is but you need to use Maya, which can only save HODs, not open them.
We can convert HODs to maya format but they loose the hardpoint information and would make us have to redo quite a bit of things.
Sastrei
9th Jan 06, 7:35 PM
Oh, interesting. I didn't know it was possible to derive a Maya source file from the .hods. Hm, rehardpointing an entire fleet for adding one engine trail....pass. :p

That's the main drawback of the improved engine trails, which is a pity as they look great - unless Tefeari intends to make a small TC out of a few custom-modelled ships. In this case one doesn't have to redo anything.
Tefeari
11th Jan 06, 11:18 AM
Very true, if anyone ever wants to equip their custom ships (from their mod) with the trails feel free to contact me.
If you make the hardpoints, I can configure the trails to the ship.

Hey i like the idea of no engine trails. If someone could make the Afterburner effect just as short but maybe brighter and thicker, it would look great and realistic.

I dont think anyone knows how to edit those.

You should make your water trails and stuff compatible with other mods like TFS, Complex, PDS, etc...
Tefeari
22nd Apr 07, 9:05 PM
I think PDS has my advanced water trails, but as far as making the regular water trails compatible with other mods, that's something the mod makers would have to do, not me.
All they have to do is make their .ship files reference the different engine trail texture for the water mod and it would work. Try asking them to do it, maybe they will.

What would be good if the water trails were avalable in the unnoficial 1.2 patch mod.
Me myself is toying around with an idea to make a sound mod (Basically old and re-mixed HW and HW:C sounds for HW2) - and if I go ahead with it, I would like to make versions of the sound mod that is compatable with the engine trails mod
Tefeari
22nd Jun 07, 11:59 PM
Ask the respective mod developers to put it in, it's quite easy to do.
Is it me or is the no-trail patch link down?

What do I need to get these working?
Tefeari

From the first post of the thread:
HOW TO INSTALL
Step 1: Unzip all contents of any of the packs into your homeworld2/data folder
Step 2: Create a shortcut to the Homeworld 2 exe file located in Homeworld2/bin/release folder
Step 3: Right click the shortcut and press properaties.
Step 4: (This is a example, it should appear remotely like this) Rename the shortcut from
"C:\Program Files\Sierra\Homeworld2\Bin\Release\Homeworld2.exe "
To
"C:\Program Files\Sierra\Homeworld2\Bin\Release\Homeworld2.exe " -overrideBigFile
Step 5: Its installed, now run Homeworld 2 using that shortcut

Tried that, still couldn't get it to work. Do I need any updates to HW2 or something else??
Tefeari
21st Jan 08, 6:08 PM
I'm not sure if the patches make a difference but your copy of HW2 should be updated to the most recent version anyway. If you follow those directions correctly there is nothing that should go wrong. If you have any other mods installed they may be conflicting with each other. You should be extracting the effect, missile, and ship folders (or something like that) to the data folder and there isn't anything to go wrong after that unless you're doing the shortcut incorrectly.

So this couldn't work with, say, Complex mod? :)
Tefeari
21st Jan 08, 6:16 PM
It depends on if they use different .ship files for the particular ships that the given modification works on. These are just modified engine graphics textures and the .ship files that they are to work on need to refernce the alternative graphic files to function.
It is EXTREMELY easy for a mod developer to use these graphics in their mods or to make them compatible with it (They just make the ships reference the alternate textures), and they are free to do so as long as they give credit to me for the engine trails.
The only way to be sure is to try it, if it doesn't work feel free to ask the developers to make a version with a particular engine trail and they should be able to do it. Or if you are any good at scripting it should be simple to accomplish yourself.

Ah, I was looking more into modifying my own file for now as Beghins seems to be pretty busy as it is, working out all the bugs.
So its mainly just telling a ship to use a certain trail texture in the .ship file? I don't think it takes a scripter to use Find. ;)
Also, how hard would it be to just lower the life time of trails?
Tefeari
21st Jan 08, 9:13 PM
It's just a matter of going into the .ship file and changing the last line to refer to the partifuclar modified engine texture like ths following: setEngineTrail(NewShipType,0,3,"trail_ribbon2.tga",0.2,0.5,0.005,8);
One of the numbers in that script is the trail length but I forget which, you can find out through a small amount of investigation.

Ok here is what I have done. I extract the content of any mod to Homeworld2/data folder, I create a copy of Homeworld2.exe to desktop and right click on it and select properties, then I change the target from D:\Pelit\Sierra\Homeworld2\Bin\Release\Homeworld2.exe
to D:\Pelit\Sierra\Homeworld2\Bin\Release\Homeworld2.exe " -overrideBigFile, after that I run the game using that exe. In game nothing changed, still have those boring engine trails. What I have done wrong??
Tefeari
22nd Jan 08, 3:07 PM
I hope you're making a shortcut and not a copy of the exe itself. Make sure there are quotes on both sides of the file path. I'm not sure if Vista would affect any of this.
Can you get any other mod to work?
Rico-
22nd Jan 08, 4:21 PM
I created a shortcut to desktop by right clicking on Homeworld2.exe then send to ---> desktop(create shortcut).
You mean like other trail mod or something like pds or warlords??
Just tested complex mod, it works fine.
Tefeari
22nd Jan 08, 6:48 PM
If you are extracting it into the data folder properly and have created the shortcut correctly there is nothing to go wrong. Thousands of people have installed this easily so I'm not sure what the problem is here. You've tried more than just one engine trail mod?
Rico-
23rd Jan 08, 1:30 AM
:banghead: Oh my god, I have been blind or something, haven't noticed the change in the engine trail and thought that the mod doesn't work. All other mods works but not the notrail.
Tefeari

You need to extract the notrail mod directly into the data/effect/trails folder

You need to remove the 2nd data folder inside your main data folder, and place it's contents in the main data folder (if that made any sense).

I can't get the same effect as you with the Alpha trail in the Interceptors... But damn these trails look good! I promote the Alpha trail in the hgn ships and the Water trail in the vgr ships, gets very interesting, and it's just everyone's face :)

Is there a way to get the mod to wok at the same time as another? So have both running at once?
Tefeari
26th May 08, 10:51 AM
H.R.N: It depends on which mods and which engine trails you're referring to. Most of the engine trail mods are just a new texture with modified .ship files to refer to it.
If the mod includes different .ship files they won't refer to the new textures by default. You can probably fix them by hand though pretty easily. The engine trail lines of code are near the end of the .ship files and the rest is identical. So you should be able to identify it pretty easily if you want to change it yourself.
Or you can always ask the mod makers to make a version that uses a particular sort of trails.

A page or so back you mentioned that you couldn't make the alphatrails and advancedwatertrails mods for all ships due to something to do with the HOD files. Well I found your mod the other day and downloaded those two packages. This morning I was mucking about with HOD files using Cold Fusion HOD Editor (by 4E534B I think) and have got alphatrails functioning on the Hiiggaran Gunship.
http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/7933/gunshipqq4.th.jpg (http://img77.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gunshipqq4.jpg)
I still think I need to widen the middle trail and maybe broaden the engine burn to reduce the effect where the third trail mysteriously appears.
But thats beside the point. What I intend to do is do this for all ships and maybe missiles. Eventualy for both types of trail. I've renamed your trail images so they dont clash with your other trail mods or vanilla Homeworld 2, as I intend to set it up so I can mix and match the trail types for individual ships, but it would still be easy enough to convent it back. I cant commit to any kind of project as im in exam season at the moment but what im suggesting is that if you are still having problems I can let you have any of the .HODs and .SHIPs I finish. After all, its building on you're work, your entitled to it, :awesome:

5th Jun 08, 12:37 PM
I don't get it,why couldn't you get it to work ?
All you have to do is to dump all the trail mods into the EFFECT folder and just rename any of them if they share the same name with another file.
Then just assign each ship and missile a different trail.
Why would you mess with the HOD file ?
I have all the trails working in each of my mods without messing with the HOD file.

Really? From what I can see all your alpha trails and advanced water trails downloads have in them is the Hiigaran interceptor. All of your other trail mods work for all ships but those two. Have I missed an update on the thread where you posted a more complete link? If I have im terribaly sorry for any confusion caused.
Tefeari
8th Jun 08, 9:17 AM
Adam: Both the Alpha and Advanced Water trails use 3 trails to function. Only the Hiigaran Interceptor has 3 engine trail hardpoints by default.
Fudge_Dragon: I am very excited that you got a program to add a engine trail hardpoint to a classic HW2 ship. It doesn't look quite right because you forgot to tell the side trails to use the Alpha trail texture (all three need to be using it). Although there may be a size issue as well because the Gunship is wider than an interceptor, this would be easy to fix. If you will go ahead and add the extra hardpoints to all the ships I can appropriately adjust the scripts to make the Alpha/Advanced water trails to work with them. Have you thought about adding the trails to the new models the Homeworld 2.0 mod is producing?
