The dark angels have good fluff, and they are hard to break... unless you're iron warriors and they refuse to run from your 4 Ordnances, in which case they all die very fast. They do have good fluff though, especially with the fallen. I know a guy here who got so sick of all the dark angels armies running around that he made an fallen army, using the same colours and symbols but with daemons and a defiler and stuff. Night Lords rules I think. Twas very cool, and he'd converted the rhinos so they were R/C and could be driven around the table remotely, which was like wtf? when the opposition sees his tanks move by themselves. Very cool.

I play almost exclusively WFB because personally I think the 40k rules suck the wang but the fluff is all good. I have a Tau army but I want to make a cool sieging SM army. With vindicators, whirlwinds, preds, lots of heavy support and stuff. There will be 2 hth weapons in the entire army and they will be carried by my 2 captains, as badges of office, who direct the fire. I have scouts which are basically the guys who spot for the artillary. I'm thinking a codex grey colour scheme. I also want to make a sieging guard army to go with them! So that marine chapter would be my fav:).
But like like both Black Templars and Dark Angels because I used to play both of them.

I'm doing prelim work on a Tau force, but no Kroot at all. I want to do something a bit different with them, who knows, maybe a mechanized Force or one that plays 'hide and seek.'
As for fave Sm chapter, with the new codex coming out, I think IF the changes being made to the UM armor is done that they will be right up there. Why? They are one of the oldest, they have seen countless battles, they have all of their honor, and they have thousands of years of hostory.
You should see some of their armor, very roman in design, with the horse hair and everything. Quality all around. They just needed a bit of a stylistic change, one that went with their background, and I think that this gives them the edge that they were always missing. Here's hoping it goes through!

I hate to vote for Other. Since my favorite chapter was actually a homegrown one from over a decade ago. Had a friend of mine use his artistic skills to make the Batmarines. Black with the classic Batman symbol on chests and shoulder pads. Best part about them was that ALL the marines had long flowing black capes.
They looked great but were bloody hard to play with given that their capes would usually dominate space around them.

I don't like the BA, mainly because I think they're a bunch of raving lunitics who obsess themselves in an outdated form of combat. They're pretty cheesy gamewise too.
Blame 3rd ed.
The Blood Angels were meant to be the epitome of "fallen from grace", noble spirited and of pure hearth yet plagued by a curse from beyound the grave. A terrible curse against which they struggle on a daily basis and thus become stronger and of purer soul becouse of the tempering their spirits must endure if they are to be saved from damnation.
There is no beating the Blood Angles fluff, it's so much above the other Chapters' it's not even funny :)
As to cheesy, they are no more broken than a dozen other lists. Sure, pre-TVR the BA rush was pretty insane but that's fixed now.
Also, I don't have a single rhino in my 4500pts. BA army

Oh speaking of Blood Angels, any tips on how to do a non-assault BA army? I'm starting my own chapter, I like shooting more than CC but I also like the BA libarians, ball etc. so how would I go about making a non-assault army from them?
Cortanus
26th Mar 04, 1:38 AM
With great difficulty. If I remember correctly, all Blood Angels have to test every turn to see if they run at the enemy, meaning your nicely placed tactical squad or devastator squad may end up making a break for combat. Be nice and challenging to use though.
ankara halla
26th Mar 04, 1:59 AM
Well, while it's next to impossible to make a really competitive shooty BA army you can have a fairly balanced all-rounder list. What's most often overlooked in a BA list that these guys are first and foremost marines with all the abilities and equpment of marines (well, exception for the BA scout squads and relocating of dreads to hvy siupport but you get the drift).
A Chaplain (or a sanguinary high priest) is a must though in any list. DC is one of the best assault units in the game and should be taken advantage of no matter the emphasis of your army.
As to shooty side, I'd take dreads and possibly a predator (if the rumors concerning the new vehicle rules in the 4th ed. are true then the Baal variant will become quite an interesting choise as it can fire all of it's weapons no matter the amount of it's movement) and Land Speeders. Possibly even attack bikes as these can be quite effective against light infantry.
Also, taking lots of tac squads is a good idea. First of all it'll give you a bigger DC but also if one or two of them fail their test it won't (or depending on placement, shouldn't) make all that big of a difference. Personally I rarely take any hvy weapons in my tac squads as I like to keep my Angels moving and relocating thru most games anyway.

Uh, u might as well just play a regular Space Marine army painted in BA colours. Blood Angels are definitely not a shooty army, although firepower is an almost necessary support for assaults.
deggy
27th Mar 04, 4:30 PM
Blood Angels are definitely not a shooty army...
EVERY marine army is shooty! It's not like BA's loose the BS 4 in favour of WS 5.
It's the same problem I had with my Deathguard, I thought they were this strong assault force that could withstand alot of enemy flak, but it wasn't until I started treating their shooting seriously that I started to win games. You're paying SO many points for each marine, compared to other armies, and its a damn shame if you don't take advantage of all the skills you're purchasing.
One of the guys here that plays World Eaters. It's hard to ensure that'll you'll get into CC if you shoot, but if you don't shoot, you might not fair that well in CC. That's the real challenge of an assault oriented, marine base army. I don't envy you lot.
I like the Fallen the most of all the marine chapters... so I guess that means I like the Dark Angels. But I play Deathguard, the most pestilent bunch.

Well, not really but it was the fluffhead in me which took over for a second there. :)

No they are not. Grey Knights are an established Chapter of the second founding who recruit and train their own warriors (just like any other chapter).
The Deathwatch on the otherhand do not recruit teenagers and turn them into lean mean killing machines. The members of the Deathwatch are veteran battle brothers trained by the Inqusition from all chapters (Blood Angels, Space Wolfs, Slamanders... etc. etc. etc.). These marines are essentially "rented out" to Deathwatch kill teams but eventually return to their own chapter to spread knowledge on how to best fight xenos scum.

Well, the Deathwatch are the fighting arm of the Alienhunters, so that's certainly true.
Also, the Deathwatch has Captains, Librarians, etc. etc. in their ranks too and referring to a (for example Ultramarine) Captain who's "commisioned" (or something) to DW as a DW Captain isn't really an issue either.
I guess my point is that DW isn't a Marine Chapter per se like the other Chapters are with their own recruits and traditions and whatnot but rather a collection of the very elite from the best troops the Imperium has to offer.

I've always wondered how Death Watch squads opperate so efficantly. Given that certain Marine chapters hate each other. IE those of the Ultramarine-type, follow the book to the letter, chapters; to those like the Space Wolves-type, serve the Emporer our way, not yours.
Do you think that theres an overridding sense of duty that stops 'em braining each other?

The super chapter? Then you must mean Legionas Custodias.
Noone seemed to pick on these guys when I mentioned them before. These were THE marines.
The Emperors personal bodyguards during the Great Crusades and the Heresy. Genetically modified to be more powerful than normal marines, these guys were increible.
During the Heresy they were even sent to conflicts around the galaxy to support the already embattled marines. Plus they have cool power armour that looks nothing like what any of the other chapters wore/wear.
I think they still guard the Throne room now.. Might be wrong.
In a game sense, imagine that your basic trooper has the same stat line as a Veteran Captain, then increase for the higher ranks :o

Well, to get technical the Adeptus Custodes is the Emperors inner guard (servants who attend to his needs, recive his directions, stuff like that) of which the Legiones Custodes are the fighting men (and yes, they are awesome... fluffwise they'd beat the living crap out of GK terminators) but they however are not marines any more than they are a Chapter.
Adeptus Astartes is the Imperial organization which encompasses the Marine fleets, support staff and everything of which the Legiones Astartes are the Space Marine Chapters, the elite fighting forces of the imperium.

Actually, the Legiones Custodes are Space Marines. If you play the Horus Heresy CCG (Which I believe is the most current fluff) then it does state that they are Space Marines, just more of the Archtypical kind. They have dreads and terminators and all that cool stuff. It also says that they do take there geneseed from the Emperor himself, so yeah, they are freakn bad! It is my opinion that the Grey Knights are a second founding chapter from them, hence they take there geneseed from him also.

1000 chapters with a suposed 1mill sm under arms , not acurate with most only having 8 full companies but whos counting
as for not knowing about them all , well it leaves room for players to make there own up and get involved , and it would be watering down the interesting ones they push , if you notice theres a few core chapters they push each release then they bring a few new ones in for a version of the game then let them go
ultramarines as a standard template and a few to show how you can make your sm interesting with out going to far out side the standard , ie spacewolves, bloodangels and darkangels and then mention there progenitors so you can even use there fluff to make your own chapter
leaves lots of room for the game to grow and them to add new instersting sm chapters that no one has heard about as well, lol as well as leaving room for people making games to come up with there own chapters :talk:

One of the most popular regiments in Rogue Trader was the Necromunda 46th 'Spiders'.
(at least i think they were the 46th maybe it was the 47th, seem to remember the "lucky 7's" alot...anyhoo). Its what the original plastic weren't meant to represent. However, they got around everyone playing the 'Spiders' by saying that the uniform of the IG was... uniform. All regiemnts wore the same.
Then with 40K 2ndEd they introduced all the 'new' regiments with their distinct styles of dress. Now they've kinda gone back to the 'uniform' IG. Most people use the Cadian models cos they are cheaper and plastic. Choose a new colour scheme and regiment name.. off you go.

Because your mission and the act you are about to commit proves the truth of all I have ever said or done. Death is nothing compared to vindication." -Primarch Night Haunter.
Badass, or badass?
Badass.

Id have to say Ultramarines. The Angels of Death are allright, as are Space Puppies, but I for one like it when the Chapters actually FOLLOW their Holy writ. I personally find it an atrocity that GW has given all the first founding and several second founding chapters special rules that directly go against the Codex Astartes. In my mind the worst offender are the Black Templars... personal glory above the good of the Empire. Not to mention they have about 4 times the numbers that a Chapter is allowed to have. Sure the Space Puppies may be mutants, but they dont put their own glory before the mission like the Templars do - the worst of Heretics.

In response to
the Black Templar, they're not a part of the first 20 chapters, so what's their backstory?
the Black Templars are a second founding chapter. Cretedafter the Horus Heresy when the large Legions were subdivided into the chapters of the second founding. The Black Templars are of the Imperial Fist stock.
I bet Rogal Dorn is real proud of them too. =]

Oh, if in the case of Chaos Space Marines, I would definately say the Death Guard. The armies of nurgle have the most interesting characters of the chaos bunch IMO.

They ARE Chaos (: The single group where most of the daemonic mutations make sense. CSM Definately Nurgle is the best and that means the Death Guard.

it has to be darkangels as my fav there cloaked models,tt rules, and there fluff is to cool to resist.
i wonder why so little people have voted for them.
if there are 111 viewers (when i came in)
and 131 voters
does that mean 20 blind voters,
or WTF?
just thought i'd point out that lil' discrepancy
