Hi,
Just wondering since GamesDay just finished, do we know any more info on Space Marine from the event? or has the DOW2 forum actually gave us more info lol. :banghead:
So, whats the news? (if any) or will they be releasing extra goodies tomorrow, like they are with Retribution?
Feel free to spill any info regarding GamesDay on this thread, and if theres actually another GamesDay thread on the Space Marine forum, im sorry but i didnt find any [So mods, feel free to lock this if there already is a GamesDay thread].
Thanks for all answers, In Advance.

I imagine that we'll have to wait for various forum peoples to get back from the pubs they went to after Games Day (or the general hanging around with other RN dolts) and get back to their computers before we'll find out anything.

Ok, so here's a quick down and dirty summary:
We had the lead mutliplayer/co-operative (yes, I said that) designer present the whole thing to us - like previous previews, it was the game emulated the Xbox 360 using GFWL (to counteract the LIVE components) and a gamepad.
We saw a short mission where the captain, whom is now being revealed, but is not programmed into the game yet, went through a bunch of caves shooting and smashing orks.
The whole thing looks ridiculously fun. He crushed grots, faced off against a weirdboy with a heavy bolter, and generally smashed his way through. He did a God of War style door opening towards the end, and the whole thing looked really, really nicely done and well polished.
It's worth noting at this point that the game is PRE-ALPHA. We were "suggested" by the Q and A session that it was going to be a summer release next year, and we were also reaffirmed (after much booing for the GFWL logon noise) that it will definately be intergrated with steamworks.
The game, I am happy to say, looks better than gears of war. Its bright, full of blood and greenskin, with the bright blue ultramarines armour to offset it. It's all about the bolter/chainsword switching, which I'm hoping they will mix up a bit for a majority of the game. Customisation was reconfirmed, and the developer (Duffy?) said that we would be able to customise our captain to fight how some of the chapters other than ultramarines might - such as raining bolter rounds onto our opponents or charging and smashing like a space wolf.
Also of note was the charge ability - the captain (who's name I've already forgotten, Ticus perhaps?) charged at some cover orks were behind and made a very satisfying bloody battle of it.
Cooperative was listed at the main menu - it might not be a cooperative campaign, and NO DETAILS were mentioned. I think its perhaps the most significant information so far, besides the fact the game isn't as far along as we would like to believe. Apparently vehicles are also in, but you can only pilot them in "cool ways", which I can only imagine is on the pintle mounted stormbolter or something similar.
On the whole, it was an excellent demo - showed a good deal of what I would expect is the battle system in the game, and showed off that Relic really do have some of the best technical engineers in the business. Also, one of my more spectical friends (Julian) was won over by this demo, and is now optimisitic for the game.
If you want more details, Bowkers and Gorb will no doubt be around soon to gush, and I'm sure Corsix will pop up and also grant you his opinion.
Feel free to fire questions that I we will try to answer.
EDIT: Oh, and I might have some goodies to... distribute. I will consider and get back to you on that front, probably some kind of forum competition. Basically, I have honor guard codes.

Weird, Steam lists the game as coming out December 2011. Maybe the console version will come out earlier. And i think the Captain's names was Titus, Tychus is Jimmy's Friend in SC2. So questions...
Is it confirmed that you can play as other chapters? And is that only in MP?
Did the Captain wear a helmet?
Did anyone ask if the game on the Pc will be mod friendly?(you didn't right?)

When you said it looks better than Gears of war, do u mean it looks better than the 3rd gears of war(also in development)?

The 3 Gears of War look pretty much the same even in the technical aspect, still i think he was talking about the art direction.

I think what Hirmetrium meant, was that it looks better in regards to the colour palette. Gears of War 3, at least what we've seen so far, is still caked in varying shades of dirt brown - whereas Space Marine has bright, contrasting colours which give it a more "fresh" visual impact.
In terms of actual graphics, hey, it's possible - though it would be hard to compare the two, considering neither are out yet, and all (most of us) we've seen is recorded footage.
Very nice to hear how pleasing it was! Rather envious that you guys got to see it first hand!

The graphics ARE better. This was on giant LCD's, in a pre-alpha build, and it blew the shit out of anything I've seen on any console/PC before (similar to what DOW2 does to most other PC games).
And yes, I'm very greatful it isn't a horrifically GRIMDARK "realistic" colour setting. Gears of war 3 has nothing graphically on Space Marine. Having seen a full demo of the game, I'm VERY excited with what they can do with it, and for it to look so amazing this early in the development is a really, really good sign.
It's certainly going to beat the shit out of firewarrior, if that one level demo was anything :P
EDIT: Crap, forgot to mention - there are rumblings of a beta. If it's through Steam or xbox live there is absolutely no information, but THQ plan to make both a downloadable Demo and a Beta somewhere along the lines. Seems like a fairly standard PR campaign.
EDIT2: Annnnnd the Honor Guard website is broken. It doesn't ask for a code, and the signups aren't working. Interesting. With a bit of luck it will soon be fixed.

What do mean by (,but is not programmed into the game yet,)?
Also, The official site asked me if I wanted a ring tone?
I don't even have any Honor Guard stuff and it said it would send it to me.

No, I was going to, then questions ran out.
Other things of note.
In the singleplayer campaign the suggestion was it would be only ultramarines.
The captain did not wear a helmet. However the guy they showed was from an older build so isn't the actual marine just yet.
No, I was going to, then questions ran out.
Other things of note:
Other stuff. Vehicles are not really playable but "you can do really cool stuff with" was what I remember. My mind is a sieve due to a long day travelling.
He refused to mention any other races but didn't really bat the obvious but there were tyranids in the first trailer.
All in all I am actually starting to feel the buzz for this game. At first when there was a lack of news I was slightly put off, but now I've seen a workable level, it took my breath away. And its pre-alpha still :D
One thing I am pleased they are doing is the whole chapter customisation in MP. His quote was "you will be able to customise anything about your marine"

Damn shame that the questions ran out, but the customization thing sounds awesome, sounds to me like what people in Dawn of War 2 have always asked, that you can not only paint the marines but also choose which wargear/armor to use, which is awesome.

Great news there about the Customisation and possible BETA release in the near future. I Just hope there is a certain degree of customisation in the campaign and maybe even a helmet toggle? After all, im sure most do want to look like a marine in full apparel on some occasions.
Just waiting for those links to possible previews, images, site info and maybe even vids. Keep up the good work guys!
BTW, i should be definately getting a PS3 for this ;)

Did you ask if there was a jump button?
I'd hate to have a faster paced game with no stick to cover and not have a jump.
Shuma
27th Sep 10, 5:44 AM
Well we've seen a Marine jump and smash some Orks with his Jump Pack and that was a gameplay bit on one of the trailers, so i'd guess that there is a jump button.
@Flamerol:
Means that you're going to be in vehicles but you will not control them directly, like the Valkyrie scene we've been shown.
DannyLee94
27th Sep 10, 7:59 AM
@Flamerol: Same as Shuma, an example of this would be that you may have to control the heavy bolter on a razorback, although you wont be piloting it youll be able to do certain stuff within the vehicle. (Like where you get to control the heavy bolter on the valkyrie).
BTW, whats going on with this forum's thread selection, it seems worse lol, im not ranting - just a bit of small talk ;) Theyll sort it out.
Edit: Its OK its changed back again :D

Well it looking better than any other console game wouldn't be surprising since Relic is mainly a PC dev and the game was probably done with extra quality. And i can't really think of many other games that look better than what we've seen in Space Marine, i can think of some, obvious ones being Crysis and Crysis 2 for example. That said i can't really give my opinion before playing the game.
Hirmetrium
27th Sep 10, 3:29 PM
Crysis still had a very gritty, dark purply alien feel. You haven't lived until you've seen Greenskins exploding with bolter shells and blood and bodyparts flying everywhere. These were subtle but vivid colours. I mean, Crysis doesn't have the yellow muzzle fire against greenskin's followed by the red blood. So much blood.
I'm honestly not trying to overhype it, but the game really did look good in my opinion. I suppose its somewhat down to detail, but there is so much grey/black/brown in Gears, the only bright thing in the entire game is the main menu which is red.

It's a good question. My honest opinion? You can't really compare the two. I will expand on that later if you'd like gorays, but at the moment, I'm just a little busy with uni work, I just wanted to reply to your question. :)

I agree Bowkers. Best to wait until the Beta is finished, or maybe even the entire game, before we start comparing Space Marine and rating it against the Gears of War/s. Although i suppose theres no real harm in saying how one has a brighter colour palette - it may be just me but i dont particular like tempting fate, and not that anyone is; i just suppose im a bit superstitious :)
Its a real let down that pictures werent allowed, i suppose theres nothing we could do though. :(

Does anyone know if there's a crouch button in the game? Considering how they're not having a stick-to-cover mechanic to favour allowing the player to go about the game more aggressively, I wonder whether there is any crouching at all either. I know I haven't seen any footage of that, so far.

The build we were using is very early so it only has a few types of early level Orks in it. Some of the bigger and more agressive greenskins will definitely provide more of a threat than just clogging up your chainsword ;-)
Titus it is. Ty-Tis.

Is the colour palette and general graphical quality you saw significantly different to what we've seen in the YouTube vids (the 720p vids)? I'm guessing the vids you saw must be on a completely different planetary scale to the vids already released because in terms of quality and colours because the ones that have been released are all rather 'yellowish' in tone, have a very dull look and overall graphically, barely meet average current-gen standards.
Can you confirm that the palette and overall quality of the vids you saw were DRAMATICALLY superior to the YouTube/demo vids that have been released so far?
Ruined
2nd Nov 10, 4:39 AM
Opiated just to check first of all it is the right Space Marine you are referencing. There are some early leaked videos from a cancelled project called Space Marine too online, these are the ones with a guy talking in the background and Chaos as the enemy.
Also bear in mind with all game development 'polish' is the final stage so games will dramatically improve graphics wise in the last 2-3 months of development. First you make everything work, then you make it pretty.
Personally i think we have a great looking product already and with the amount of time we have left until release it is going to get a lot better.

We saw it on a bunch of HD TV screens, straight from a super PC in a very high resolution. The colours are very vibrant and I don't remember any sort of "Yellow tinge" on it. I think its the sort of thing that a Youtube video preview just can't cover, and theres very few HD trailiers of the gameplay around.

I honestly think the videos look pretty nifty. I like good graphics as much as the next guy and they look pretty good. If they get even more polished, all the better.

so far the the trailers that have been released do give a very "yellowish" tone to it. i dont mind it but yea he does have a point and i dont think its because of youtube

screenshots from THQ site (http://www.thq.com/us/game/show/6218/Warhammer%C2%AE%2040,000%C2%AE:%20Space%20Marine%C2%AE) backs this up, but as said still early development so it could be toned down and/or improved
or it could be from all the gold gubbinz on the marines
