I don't play Orks and I don't really play Warhammer 40k all too much, but I have a few friends who did and they were showing me some of their Orks. I remember one of them telling me of these goblin dudes called Grots that the Orks were able to have in their armies and they were able to pick em up and use em as shields in battle and stuff.
But so far with all the White Dwarf mags I own and through checking out sites I haven't seen a lick of information about these guys. Were they cut out in some edition of 40k or something? Or are they still in the game but just very rarely used?
And if they ARE in the game, wouldn't it be neat to see an ork run around with a Grot-shield? :D

They are still in the current edition. Flip through your friend's codex.

These (http://uk.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.uk?do=Individual&code=99060403028&orignav=10) are grots, and if I'm not mistaken, they are mostly used as crew for artillery now. (I haven't flipped through codex Orks in ages, and I currently don't have it with me).

Grots are amongst the most useless troops in the game (rivalling Chaos Cultists). Though we haven't seen any Grots so far, if there are any in the game I presume they'd be used as cannon fodder so that the Boss and his Ladz can get into possition to give them a real clobbing, as well as tie up units in combat so they can't shoot the boyz.

Actually fielding an all grot army is considered one of the cheasier things you can do with an ork army.

Grots are surprisingly good/amusing. Just don't expect them to start killing tanks.

Can you still pick up grots and use em as shields? That idea just sounds so awesome, and if you could it'd look so neat in the game. SMs have foxholes for defense, Orks could have Grot shields!

The advantage of gretchin were that were disposable troops. You had them at the front and you got them in front of your enemy as soon as possible as they had to fire at the nearest thing to them. They couldnt ignore the closers enemy for a more dangerous ones farther away.
I remember a damn good game I was playing against a gang of 20 or 30 gretchins which kept my terminator squad busy for a couple of turns.

Heh, I think it started with M37's post (http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?p=372481#post372481).
Where did this idea come from? Its the silly guardsmen that hide in foxholes! :) A Space Marine would only be down in a foxhole to keep the poor guard's morale up! ;)
And yes XSKiith, in 3rd ed. tabletop rules grotz, like any friendly infantry, never block line of sight to other friendly infantry. You may be thinking of the inverse, that the enemy can't "shoot over" grotz even though they're small. They don't count has half-size, like nurglings or scarabs which do not block enemy line of sight.

Bleh, I'm reading too many threads here. I'm starting to mix up people's ideas with what's actually in the game.

Nope. Grots are just above half height of Orks, and therefore by the rules will block line of sight to the Orks behind them. If you shoot 'between' the grots then the Orks behind them get a 5+ cover save, but if they make the save a grot dies.

Grots are one of the most crucial units in a footslogging Ork army. Firstly the block LOS to the walking Ork units by being in a big group, all touching bases. Then, as holes are blasted in their lines, they provide a cover save to the Orks as they march forward.
And what's wrong with Chaos Cultists? You've seen their redone rules in the current Chaos Codex? Only Alpha Legion have access to them and they come with all sorts of special skills.
