There was a thread like this a while back and I really liked it. So I decided I will start up another one with our now entirely appropriate forum board :D.

Suggest a single song to the community (And only one). I'm sure all you music lovers have many songs you'd like to share, but if you could pick just one, what would it be?

Just give the name of the song and the artist and (entirely optional, but it would be nice) an embedded youtube or other link so that we can listen to the song right here.

I'll start, It's hard for me to choose and I'm sure this isn't my favorite song of all times, but I really like it:

I like this song (and the album associated with it) that it's been referenced in my user title and avatar for over a year (and even Christmas-y versions have appeared for the past two Christmases.) Hell, part of this song is even the ringtone on my cellphone. The entire album is amazing, though... it's a concept album done right.

Doing this again I think I'm still going to have to go for some Celtic music; there's not nearly enough of that around these days. My recommendation, then, goes to Niel Gow's Lament for the death of his second wife. They say when his Margaret died, he couldn't bear to touch his fiddle for weeks.. and when he finally did, this wonderful song was the first thing to come out of it. Being able to transmute that much sadness into a thing of such beauty is truly a wonderful gift.

As for artists, Gow was obviously the original but there aren't a lot of recordings from the 1700s. I haven't had too many compare to, so I'll just say that Alasdair Fraser's performance of it on Legacy of the Scottish Fiddle, Vol. 1 is remarkable. Of the Youtube performances I could find, I think this is probably the best:

A nice bit of satire from home.

E: for those of you from across the pond, the two fingers that you think is "Peace", it's not, it's an offensive gesture akin to the middle finger. The peace sign is the opposite way.

It's gotta be Pink Floyd. Not listened to them In a while, but they still stand out as one of the most influential bands on my own life so far. And what better song than the first song I heard by them, and the song that got me hooked! It really has a brilliant opening. Made me take up guitar as well!

Here's a neat one: Vidda by Ole Edvard Antonsen. From his album Landscapes a couple years back, this one is inspired by the Norwegian tundra. My family used to vacation there every fall: hiking, picking berries etc. While I think some of the other songs on the album better capture the sparseness and solitude of that landscape, this triumphant song feels like a great celebration of its majestic views and is still my favourite among them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_fYBp_qgm0

Magos, it actually flows into the next song in the OST Rokki-wa doko (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGzBgB2NpjE&feature=related), which is why it doesn't sound like it has a satisfying ending.

It's Friday Night..
You're going out tonight to a club. There will be friends, drink, women, dancing, it's going to be an awesome night.
You're gonna drink till you fall over, some pretty lady is gonna dance like you'd paid her, you're gonna rock out with your cock out..

and in just a few short minutes...

you'll be leaving the house and it all starts..

This...is the song you plant in your head. The Soundtrack to a Night you'll never remember with the friends you'll never forget...

Oh wow... I Autotune overdosed in about 20 seconds.

Then I washed my ears out with Ennio Morricone's wonderful Cinema Paradiso main theme. Gorgeous, relaxing piece by one of the all-time great movie composers. This Youtube performance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emdM2uX2CWA&feature=player_embedded)* was one I'd never heard before, and while it takes a little while to get to the music, it pays off big time. Yo-Yo Ma is just great in it.

Now with the disclaimer I have a lot of trouble trying to ignore all the teenage violent revenge fantasies that make up a lot of Tyler the Creator's album which has caused a fair backlash (raping pregnant women, really?) and lots of casual homophobia (he justifies he's not meaning it in a homophobic way...eer ok), he obviously is out to shock in a rather dull teenage way...in another however Yonkers is quite clearly the best hip-hop track I've listened to in a long time, which maybe the backlash has rather eclipsed (also that he's pretty likeable in interviews actually...)

Right now I'm relaxing after a long evening shift at work with Scene V (Prelude) from Symphonic Suite Final Fantasy. A pretty varied piece based on the Overworld and Chaos Temple themes from Final Fantasy 1, along with the ever-present Final Fantasy Prelude (all by Nobuo Uematsu). It spans from a lively march to a quiet harp-and-flute duet, and it's all so beautiful I can feel the stress just melting away.

It's not a song, but since my first concert was the Wiggles (I was 3), I got shamefully excited when I stumbled across this. There are currently 6 in the series and it's a nice intro to guitars if you don't know much about them and also a bit of guitar porn for enthusiasts. Most of them are only 2-3min long, so if you enjoyed the wiggles or just like looking at some nice guitars, go check out the rest of them.

The last one i found on this absolutely wonderful blog: Awesome tapes from Africa (http://www.awesometapes.com/). There are tons upon tons of music treasure to be found.. i prefer ethiopian music myself since they are so deliciously quirky but there's probably something for everyone there.

That M83 track is odd...reminds me of a lot of stuff going around at the moment starting with that Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti album (still a terrible band name).

Today I have for your consideration an oldie but good, that I had actually forgotten about until I heard it on the radio recently. I have two versions since I couldn't decide whether I liked the studio version or the live version from Woodstock better. So Linkin Parks new album 'Living Things' is actually really good which was a pleasant surprise as id thought that their past two albums were not that great xD (thousand suns was only good if you listened from start to finish without shuffle on, and Minutes to Midnight had only 2-3 songs that were good in my view) To me the entire album seems like they took a lot of the good parts of their previous two albums and flowed with them. As much as id love for LP to go back to their more hardcore days (so Hybrid Theory or Metora style) i know they have said they arent, so its atleast nice to hear that they can still make music i can listen to in my car without having to bare listening to the entire album through (which i rarely do :P )

Linkin Park - I'll be Gone (Probably my favorite song so far, it has a New Divide/ What i've done sort of vibe)
