View Full Version : Space Marine dlc suggestions

I'm concerned about a repeat of the $7.49 usd skin packs they made for dow2.
I'd rather see some free coop missions like Red Dead Redemption provided, to get new and existing fans excited.
I think Space marine is going to rely on word of mouth from the pc crossover crowd onto consoles.
charging for skin packs is terrible.
coop missions, interesting multiplayer maps, wave mode maps, play as different character races or races, are worth paying for.
I'd like to see a new approach to their dlc, give us some dlc freebies to generate interest, then set dlc prices below current competition, make us want to buy dlc without feeling ripped off. This can all start with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine.
What type of dlc would you want to see the most?

Wow, this thread is way too fucking early. Did you miss the post in the Dark Angels DLC thread where Ruined said that THQ was watching fan feedback intently, judging what fair pricing for DLC is?
As for word of mouth, remember Gears of War? UT players didn't have to word-of-mouth that game to any console gamers, and it was almost the same situation back then. Famous PC dev studio who are absolutely nobody in the console market take a headfirst plunge into the deep end. Gears of War succeeded crazily, and there's no reason to think Space Marine won't. Although word of mouth via online forums and such is important, there's a reason tens of millions of dollars are spent on advertising campaigns for games, and that's because most customers learn about the games through that medium, not word of mouth.
Free DLC? The Last Stand. That is all. You complain about one new thing, when the things you've asked for Relic has already done once. Did you start playing DoW yesterday or something?
I'd like to see a DLC for this game we're playing right now where this thread is retconned and the plot continues without it.
too early? I don't think so, since it always takes time to put things together. If they haven't already got a set schedule for what they want to do, it doesn't hurt now to put forward some suggestions for what we would like.
We're now getting a feel of what type of game this will be from the previews. The more information and ideas from fans the better i say, rather than hoping they come up with something better than what other games have put out or the types of dlc they have put out.
FYI yes i was late in getting dow1 and into the 40k ip, the advertising for 40k or any relic games so far has not been on the level of games like Gears of war. I myself got a few mates into 40k after buying the dow1 complete edition and after hearing about it from the coh forums. I don't like the direction dow2 took so i have not followed the dow2 threads.
It's going to be tricky to standout from the previous space marine shooter games but 40k has the potential to top them all once they get to see the ip.
They didn't even realize how popular wave modes would be (alot of companies seemed surprised), so I'd like to emphasize more coop type dlc, as I think there would be alot of potential buyers interested in this type of play.
I'd at least like to see more last stand type maps for Space Marine than whats available in dow2 (maybe i'll eventually get it then).
Most games after they have been released it is too late to suggest dlc as they already have a schedule and if it bombs they plan to make no more. DLC suggestions now could address any problems or request from fans soon after release.

I'd really love a Dark Angels DLC pack like Retributions. I'd gladly pay a fiver for such content.

Nah, I dont think this is too early. We know they are watching us, so if we get out some good suggestions, we know relic will listen!
I would deffo like to see map expansions, and possibly extra campaign content as well.
RE: Map Expansions. I dont mean £10 for 4 map type ones like some games put out *cough*CoD*cough*. I mean £10 for 5 maps, that contain new weapons, new customisation abilities, new awesomeness. I want to see some form of space battle type thing. Who's got Reach? Whats that map called where you fight in a Space Station, and in zero-g. Forgive me if i'm wrong, I dont have an Xbox.

Granted, there have been times where free stuff has been offered in the form of DLC, but there's is some really crappy free DLC out there. Instead of generating interest, it generates the lack of. Free/cheap stuff can sometimes work against you because it's a reflection of the company and what kind of product they're willing to give consumers. To be perfectly honest, I'd be more concerned about the quality of the game than the DLC. To use Gears of War as an example as Ramrod did, the game was a huge success, as well as the sequel, and the DLC that followed added on much more replay time to the games. Well worth the cost, in my opinion.
I'm a firm believer in "you get what you pay for". If you're expecting quality DLC for next to nothing, then I say don't be surprised or disappointed when they don't deliver.
If they haven't already got a set schedule for what they want to do, it doesn't hurt now to put forward some suggestions for what we would like.
I'm pretty sure the game wouldn't even be in development if they didn't have a set schedule. Again, it's a business. They have project timelines and deadlines to meet.
It's going to be tricky to standout from the previous space marine shooter games but 40k has the potential to top them all once they get to see the ip.
It's going to be tricky for Space Marine to stand out from Fire Warrior and Space Hulk? I think you're seriously underestimating the potential this game has.
No offense, but it seems like you're doing a lot of speculating and not enough research.

He didn't mean 40k Space Marines, he meant Halo, Gears of War etc. General space marines. Uncapitalized.

To be fair to the Space Hulk games, they were pretty good. Space Marine has a little to live up to. =P
In all seriousness, I interpreted that statement the same as Spezz did. And yes, smfte, it will be difficult to top Halo or whatever other generic sci-fi shooter-of-the-month might be popular at Space Marine's release, but is it really necessary for it to do so? As long as my friends and I enjoy it, and it does well for Relic and THQ, I really don't care if it doesn't become "the next big thing." I don't need Space Marine action figures from NECA Toys, or a Space Marine movie to go straight into development Hell for ten years at Universal. I want to enjoy the game, and for the devs and publisher behind it to make enough money from it that they can deliver on an even better sequel down the line. I think these are pretty reasonable hopes.

I concur. It is never going to topple Halo. Nor is Dark Millenium going to topple WoW. All we can hope is that it steals a decent sized chunk of people so that the game sells well, has a decent online community and generates enough revenue/interest for DLC and ultimately sequels.

I would like to see DLC that keeps Space Marine relevant. One of the best uses of DLC is that it can add things to games that make you want to keep playing them. Since I have not played Space Marine I don't know what that DLC would be yet. The best DLC adds something to a game you never knew was missing but when they add it, it is awesome. New skins and trinkets are neat but they don't add to the longevity of games. Of course I don't want to be "ripped off" paying for DLC but I don't mind paying for it. If paying for DLC makes Relic money, keeps Space Marine relevant, and makes Space Marine successful, that means they will have a bigger budget for Space Marine 2 and any other future titles they make.........like an Inquisitor game similar to Mass Effect 2 where you can explore the 40k universe in depth :D

That would be SO COOL. And the DLC for Mass Effect is really good as well. What I want from a 40k game would be homeworld style empire building but with 40k fluff e.g battlefleet gothic. Or a X3 type thing where you personally command the ship. Anyway, off topic rant over.
I would like Mass Effect 2 style DLC, adding things to the singleplayer/co-op side of the game. DLC does tend to favorite MP aspects. I would like a co-op map pack and enemy addon style DLC thing.

Don't get me wrong, Space Hulk was a great game. Scared the crap out of me on occasion. However, it's not 1993 anymore. Video games have come a long way since then. ;)
As for comparing and contrasting to games like HALO and such, there's no need to, really because, well, Ramrod already covered it in his statement.

I'm sure there will be people who like Space Marine, and at the same time, can also like Halo :)
DLC map packs work pretty well. A few nice 8v8 maps along with a couple cleanse maps every couple months would be great. Maybe some skins too, although they said you already have an army painter basically, so it would have to be along the line of the Dark Angels content, so special trophies/accessories on your character.

Relic needs to get with its pedigree and really think outside the box for multiplayer modes and DLC.

I would like to see the DLC not as MP oriented as most other games. I do play MP in games, but really like SP and same console co-op more. Mass Effect hit a homerun as far as i'm concerned. All were good DLC and worth the money. If they could pop some MP with SP DLC, I'd be happy. And yes, Dark Angels for Imperial and maybe clan schemes for Orks. I'd be all about more MP if I could play a Speed Freakz or Goffz Ork :)
Chompster
3rd May 11, 7:45 PM
you wont even play as Orks in MP only SM and CSM so it be Marks as DLC or extra Undivided bits(Irons warriors, alpha, nightlords etc) as for SM, DA already got some for DoW2 no need to start out with them again.
though that would also be a great DLC, a game mode where you get to play as Orks an maybe even throw some short SP missions in, id easily pay $10-$15 for that.
@smft below me cus i dont want to post again..
the coop/single player crowd which i think can outnumber the competitive multiplayer crowd or at least match it.if a game has MP, in the end(and these days even the beginning) its what usually keeps the game alive. IMO.
so im gonna completely disagree with you on that.
Y i think the player base at first will be a bit different to the normal console shooter crowd. So I would like Relic to focus on a different type of dlc than what other games in this genre have been offering, i.e good coop modes, and y single player dlc, as others have said.
most red blooded males (females too maybe) who get a chance to see a cutscene or play a 40k game like dow or Space Marine now, could easily be converted, They just need to experience it, and I'm pretty sure 40k could be more than just a niche market. I used to ignore 40k for year cos i thought it looked weird.
A 10hr single player campaign doesn't look great on paper, so some single player or coop dlc i think is going to be important to the coop/single player crowd which i think can outnumber the competitive multiplayer crowd or at least match it. That's extra $$$ right there for the bean counters who seem to be running the companies now.
All Space Marine has to do is highlight the 40k features that make it better than the Halo and Gears IP imo.
Make dlc fluff scenarios and if possible other playable races that make 40k so unique. Don't just try to provide generic esport class based, levelling, and multiplayer map packs that other games provide, which is getting old.
The dlc market is also different, why would you want to price any dlc as a luxury item? Are those people going to sell it on ebay 5 years later? Does a company only want to sell to a small percentage of game purchasers and make less sales overall? Wouldn't it be better if everyone bought the dlc? sales by total volume and not by a high profit margin from a small group of loyal fans.
I'm not paying $15.95 aud for a few mp maps, give me some extra playable character races for wave mode then ok. Undercut the current prices so no one even thinks about whether they should buy it or not.
Looks like Relic has a good game here, and I'd like to be able to sell it to mates who have not heard of 40k and expand the player base. Sales by volume can work here if they are willing to take the chance. If they trust there game, some good free dlc (e.g red dead redemption coop dlc) can lead to more sales further down the line, and make Space Marine more than just a rent.

A Space Hulk DLC would be nice IMO.
Every mission in the board game would translate nicely to a third person action shooter. I would play 15 dollars for DLC if it added 6 new co op missions/ maps, there are six in the vanilla Space Hulk game, new skins and a chance to chase SMs around as a genestealer.
The bowles of a Hulk would be a great place to play capture the flag/relic or to play some sort of horde mode.
I think that Relic should start with the basics which are new maps. You can usually never go wrong with maps as long as they're priced fairly and are of top-notch quality.
And that's if they're multiplayer isn't terrible!
To expand Co-Op, Spacehulk is a fantastic idea. However not to restrict the gameplay, a Horde/Firefight mode should be included.
Ramrod
6th May 11, 12:02 AM
Space Hulk, the boardgame, has horde missions. The Space Hulk missions are varied enough that any Space Hulk themed DLC can serve as a Horde mode, CTF mode, Assassination mode, Last Man Standing mode, and Objective-based mode.
The more I think of it, though, the less I want Space Hulk in this. Space Hulk really needs to be in the first person, and slower paced than this. However, some Space Hulk-styled maps would be awesome.

If they would give me a Rogue Trader game like Pirates:Gold, Pirateer 2, or Freelancer I could die happy. Or hell a Battlefleet Gothic would be good too since Homeworld kicked so much ass back in the day.

All I hope for is that they do not make this yet another generic shooter. That is all.
IMO Co-Op>MP: DLC Co-Op campaign expansions (I'll PAY!!!!), MP maps (meh, if MP is GREAT then I would pay, but if lag is bad or its generic then no).

A Space Hulk styled Cleanse map.
Chapter-neutral armour sections for those of us who make our own Chapters. E.g. a shoulder pad with a dragon on it, or a starburst, or a fist+halo design. Things like that.
Mainline chapter/legion armour iconography, with chapter/legion specific styles. E.g. Dark Angels robes, Iron Warriors servo-arms, Alpha Legion 'scale' effect on armour plates and so on.
All of the above armour DLC to be fully colourable.

still wondering if in cleanse mode you will be using a chapter you chose or your custom one, or that you play as th Deathwatch. no high hopes on it but if not then DW could make for a nice DLC as well it would be like the chapter/legion armour iconography Sillydread talked about, i sure wouldnt mind having full black armor and a shining left arm :)

- Additional enemies for Cleanse mode (Nids! :jig: ).
- Additional multiplayer game-types/options (Assault Marines vs. Raptors FTW!).
- An offline "Arena" mode, where players can select any in-game troops and pit them against one another, choosing their race, class, equipment, chapter, etc. For example, I could select 1 Ork Nob with Power Klaw and Slugga vs. 10 Lasgun-armed Imperial Guardsmen, and then up to three of my mates and I could choose to play as Guardsmen! Complex, but unique to your game and insanely re-playable.
- Standalone coop missions, such as fighting through a Space Hulk or defending a fixed position with heavy weapons and turrets (maybe even vehicles ;)).
In order to draw a larger crowd, Relic could also include protagonists from other factions/races during one-off DLC coop missions, such as Eldar Aspect Warriors, Tau Fire Warriors (show 'em how itz dun boyz!), Imperial Stormtroopers, Ork Nobs, maybe even Ymargl Genestealers or something! DLC-specific troops could then be added to the Cleanse and/or Arena modes too. That's some race-specific DLC that people would pay through the neck for, and you wouldn't have to implement entire new factions to do it! :agree:

id like to see necrons invasion or nids invasion for cleanse mode dlc and huge maps with environment changing effects for cleanse mode and multiplayer.
also in a interview it is mentioned that the inquisition will be involed in the story in some way, so that might mean that there might be an inquisitor in the game and if there are i would like to see a side campaign where you play as a inquistor they could add new weapons like a crossbow and new ablities like rain of arrows type shot. if an inquisitor is in the game it shouldnt be that hard to make the player able to play one through a short side campaign.
there are games that have done this before so its certainly not impossible for them to do.
games i think of that have done this off the top of my head are:
dragon age: origins there is a dlc that lets you play as the darkspawn
resident evil 4 you can play as ada wong through her side missions.
those are the only games i can think of righ now but im sure there is more.

whole new race? thats wishful thinking.. especially Necrons. why would they be there? that doesnt even make any sense, nids could since they attack anyone and anything but really guys? i see no reason in wishing for new races being added as the chance is so slim its pointless. best chance you have is in a sequel. and yes its been confirmed a long time now that theres a inquisitor, concept art of him has even been shown, Inquisitor Drago or something. a short campaign as someone else would indeed be fun and would keep people interested even more, though it have to be done right. maybe if you do play as the inquisitor you would play as him before the invasion or titus, as he was investigating.. whatever it is hes investigating.
but a new race? I'm sticking to very unlikely.

I'm not saying it was amazing either, the models didn't really do much for me (but you bet your ass I'd buy a Grey Knight model change, probably the same way Dark Angels fans felt), and I didn't get it; however, it sold really well.
