View Full Version : Multiplayer VOIP/PTT

Why is there no option for PTT (Push to talk) for multiplayer? Which should be pc mp gaming 101 kind of thing. You'd think so anyways (But this is a port so...)

Why is there not an option to turn down, or globally mute everyone from the start?

Why in the world do I have to listen to everyone clicking their keys and buttons, munching on stuff and talking about their bowel movements before I get into a game (Like during the loading screen)
- Then once im finally in, have to take a minute and mute every single person I can.

Seriously? Come on.. Fix this. Voice activated mics are fine for consoles but it's just fail on pc.

Need I go on? Yes? ok..

How about why is it that I can't control whether or not if I want people to hear what I'm saying in game or not.
- If i'm in vent with my friend playing this God awful port (Good single player though), and I'm talking to him on vent... Why in the world must everyone else have to hear our conversation or anything else for that matter?

Granted I know most pc players nowadays just mute everyone in game (Like myself) on default right when they enter. But hello? Doesn't that sound like a little bit of a design flaw?

Agreed. I can only fault the game seriously in two aspects, this is one of them.

The second being the matchmaking, I have not been able to play with anything better than a 1 bar ping so far. Played yesterday with a room full of Australians and Kiwi's, yet the game was being hosted by the only American everytime.

I thought the French were bad. Let alone German, which sounds like type writers wrapped in tin foil being kicked down stairs.

@Pock

I'll take that one personally.

Lets hope that thing is in the next patch... otherwise I'll have to rethink goin into MP...

Seriously? Come on.. Fix this. Voice activated mics are fine for consoles but it's just fail on pcThis! For the love of the God Emperor, THIS!

Nothing wears down situational awareness worse than hearing someone else's game sfx coming through their mic because the asshole is:
a.) Too stupid to wear earphones.
b.) Too cheap to wear earphones. (lolwut? Seriously, I know people like this)
c.) Too stupid to wear earphones.

Nothing annoys more than when some other ork half-breed has his garbage music blaring and sufferes from all the above.

That's all before we bring in the trolls of course, who do this sort of thing deliberately whether PTT exists or not. But that in itself is the sole reason that the mute button exists in the first place. It's not there to mute the other commisar-fearing gaurdsmen who are just too plain stupid to keep their shit quiet and their coms-chatter to a minimum.

Relic dev Jagermaestro over on the SomethingAwful forums has said he's working on a 'mute all' button.

Pseudonymn
8th Sep 11, 9:44 PM
But a PTT button would be more practical. I think I can safely say on behalf of most everyone here, it's not a matter of not wanting to hear our teammates. It's a matter of not wanting to hear them all the time while we play.

Also, such a heavy handed approach still leaves the problem of me wanting to play with my friends and having to mute all, selectively unmute my friends and STILL be annoyed by the fact that I can hear them chewing, drinking, burping, yelling at their cat, whatever.

Well getting both features implemented would be ideal (and i am sure it will happen eventually), but for now that does the trick for me.

there is a push to talk, it's in your steam settings voice tab. some people claim tha it doesn't work though. the other problem is people don't even realize other people can hear then - there is no indication that your mic is on and you are broadcasting.

Pseudonymn
8th Sep 11, 11:17 PM
That there is no indication that our mics are broadcasting is just a symptom of a much larger problem. And it shouldn't be hard for people to figure out that they are broadcasting just like everyone else if they also know their mic is physically connected to their system. Also, game developers should not be reliant upon Steam for their VoIP transmission. If they are going to provide it as a feature, they should do so over the whole 9 yards. Just saying.

))) Nobody will listen to that... and i dont know how can quick mute mic from game
It would be necessary that developers have solved this problem on admininstrative level!
mic on button by default! PTT!

Now I do not know - game transfers mine voice or not!
It does not inform me (icon or other like in other game)

Ugh, I can't agree more. I hate hearing people mouthbreathing or eating or leaving their mics somewhere else so we have to hear the rest of the sounds their homes make. And I hate having to manually mute everyone before the start of every match. We need an option to just turn off voice chat on our end, so we don't have to hear all that crap.

mike2003
12th Sep 11, 12:04 PM
most players dont say anithing in mic, but we are forced to listen to their music, ambient sounds in room, phone cell etc.

Viper114

Or, one time, force us to listen to some anime audio in its original japanese voice dubbing. While it was funny to hear at first, it was annoying while actually playing.

Viper114
12th Sep 11, 4:34 PM
ARGH, I can't take this much longer. I can barely hear the sounds of the games over people's goddamn mics staying on and recording NOTHING. It's getting to the point where I think people do it just to be aggravating to their opponents.

Misiok
12th Sep 11, 4:39 PM
Lol? But you can mute them, did you not know that? Press TAB and click on where their speaker shows op/should show up and mute them. In the lobby you can mute everyone, and it is advised you do so. In the game you can mute only those who are currently transmiting.

Mute All button is in and I'm working on PTT right now.

edit: by "in", I mean it's finished/working and will be in an upcoming patch. No ETA on said patch yet.

Viper114

I know how to mute them, but it's annoying to have to do it, and sometimes I just don't get the option to, like in Annihilation when I start off.

But I'm glad to hear about the news Jager. I can only hope the patch comes soon...

Emperor willing, early next week for the first PC patch. It will include Mute-All, Push to Talk, and other improvements/fixes.

This for the love of god.

Okay I admit it....I like to grumble when I'm playing. I get killed, I say "ah fuck sake" to myself, I move on.

I don't enjoy the fact that I can't grumble to myself because my mic is always on and ALWAYS BROADCASTING.

I would turn it off but it doesn't have an off button, it is a cheapo mic connected to the back of my tower which is inside a computer desk cubby. It's not easy getting back there.

Plus constantly having to mute and hear people. Not to mention I don't live alone so there is ALWAYS background noise.

All in all this needs fixing hard. It's not even a good idea for consoles, so why it is on PC I dunno.

Muted me when I was on Mumble, plus I play other games aside from SM so I don't feel the need to tinker with settings when I load up. But they're working on a fix anyway so it's all good!

Shame. Will have to endure headaches and eyestrain then. Not sure why it isn't trivial though, changing the FOV on the fly is a pretty basic functionality for any engine (seeing as that's how scopes/zoom is done). Even if it was exposed in a config file rather than the UI it would make a massive difference. Thanks for asking though Macbug.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blZUao2jTGA is a really good explanation of why console and PC FOV's should be different. Its just a shame barely any multiplatform devs understand or care.

Jager
14th Sep 11, 1:57 PM
The FOV isn't constant throughout the game and changes between different cameras, cutscenes, etc, so we can't just shove some slider in there without it having the potential to seriously break things. It's not ruled out for a later patch, but definitely for this one.

From what I read the PS3 already has the patch. But it's all down to Sony when to put it up to download.
