Eh. Odd problem.

Running on Win98 SE. Now, I do not know how this happened, or when it happened but it appears I am missing atleast two files.

Whenever I attempt to run wordpad, or MSPaint (So far those are the only two effected) I get this;

"A required .DLL file, MFC42.dll, was not found"

Then, whenever I try and run an image editing software I have; Photoimpact, I get this;

"A required .DLL file, C:\Windows\System\MSVCRT.DLL, was not found"

Can anyone help me in replacing these two files? Or atleast helping me fix this problem? Thanks.

Okay, solved the problem. I did a search for the file on my HD, and I found it somewhere else, copy and pasted it, wordpad and MSPaint work fine now.

But, when I tried to copy and paste with the second problem, it told me I could not paste it there because windows was using it. this makes no sense, because in C:\Windows\System there is no file by the name of MSVCRT.DLL. Eh, help on this one?

Thanks.

The second problem is either because the file is copy protected --not likely--- or that a program you were running was using that *.dll . Try closing all other programs before pasting it. Otherwise if windows itself is using it, then start in dos mode and copy from the command prompt

You may also want to try running System File Checker. Open up a DOS command line and type SFC and hit enter. Be sure you have your windows CD handy and just follow the on screen instructions.

I think a .DLL is a necissary system file... whenever I accidently delete one, I blast my hard drive and set it to the factory defult!

Ai, but I do not have a windows CD. Win98 SE came preinstalled on the hard drive when I bought it. I have had no real need to upgrade, so, no win disk.

When I tried to put it in with no programs running at the very start, but I haven't tried using DOS though. I'll try that tonight.

Thanks IcecreamLtDan and AlphaPrimate.

Silver Quasar, I'd like to ask you to please not spam in my threads. This is the second time you've done so. If you cannot offer any help, you're just frustrating me when I'm already ready to spear the monitor with my keyboard.

Why couldn't you download them from an FTP site of get them with a Morpheus clone. It don't think it would be illegal. You would just be fixing something you already paid for.

Whenever I attempt to run wordpad, or MSPaint (So far those are the only two effected) No great loss, then... :D

Ai, I fixed it. Must have had a program running in the background when I tried to paste it in. I restarted, then tried right away, and it worked. I needed another .dll in order for it to work, but in the end, I won. I really appreciate the help guys, I owe you one.
