it looks nice!!!!
how many polygons is it made of??

Fang

That is pretty good... (not sure if your making your own iteration or copying GW model exactly) if you are going for more like the model the blades need to be a wee bit smaller like an 8th or so, also the very rear legs need to be smaller as well and thinner they are to much like well a velociraptor, and they have hoof like things on the bottom of their legs not dinosaur like feet, also I cant quite be sure by the pic but there is only 3 arm/leg per side, I think you have that but im not sure, other than those small nitpicks Id say that is a very nice model

Hey Wazz, now you know how we feel. ;)

Nice-looking model, btw!

^ lol

if i may point out that tyranids generally arnt soft-bodied. they have an exo-skeleton that limits movement and they limbs wouldnt 'bend'. like what fang posted... they arent dinosaurs.. more like insects. your model should be more segmented and rigid. but all in all its an awesome start. great work.

damn.... dow isnt out yet and every other wh40k fan is chomping at the bit for expansions and mods.

Fang
3rd Jun 04, 4:05 PM
I was just posting some constructive critism, I didnt think it was offensive, the model is excellent except for those few small points I listed, I hope he continues, would like to see the carnifex, hive tyrant, raveners, lichtor, tyrant guard etc... as is feasible.. I wasnt trying to be offensive, sorry if I was.

Civik
3rd Jun 04, 5:53 PM
oh, no, fang I don't think it was meant to chide ya or anything. ;) Excellent model but I second Fang's insight on this. Besides, with the hooves, you'll have a lower polycount. ;)

Wazz

It's all out of my mind, i wanted the gaunt to be more raptor like, also, from certain people i've heard "overdo this and that", and i did and now people complain about things being to large, so there's not way to please everyone, i've realized the best way of doing things is to try several different ones and chose your own way - same with relic they prolly do the same thing - and yes shadione, I do know how you feel, i've been around the modding community as both a model and designer and it is indeed hard to please people, and whatever you do, there will always be people who aren't satisfied

the way you see the model is the way it'll be, as i'm 2nd gen diehard fan, the horm to me is the fastest tyranid and in 2nd ed had a movement of 18" (6+6+6) so that's just me trying to put that picture into model, everyone has his own view of things :)

I however appreciate the comments and critique, but the reason why the model looks the way it does is to fit it in with the rest of DOW - not too realistic, but yet not too comical... We'll see what it turns out like after it's skinned :)

Also, it's around 1900 polies... there are some strangley shaped things in the pic, that's just because i tested what the run animation would look like in a sloppy way!

Reason why I don't have hooves on it, well, i like the feet better :P You can make cooler stuff with them when animating, so i simply changed it :)

Wazz: As someone who has no knowledge of table top WH40k, I'd say the model is looking quite nice.

FYI, though, you should edit your previous post rather than posting twice in a row ("double posting").

I think that the legs are too smooth. I think that you should add the chinonous shell, but in the right places, so it can run. The teeth. Heehee! They're perfect. You can imagine... 'Before my teeth were jagged, and stained with rotting carcases. After just a week with clear-a-clean they're perfect.' (Joke) They do need a rough up, but that will afect your poly count.
Still, amazing gaunt, keep it up!

Vijil

the zerglings were ripped off 40k. Dont anyone say that this was taken from the zergling.

wazz, please try not to double post. Its much better to edit.

Absolutely class model!

Having a horde of those things charging in is gonna be soo sweet!?!

Hey! Leave him alone, if he kept editing his posts you'd miss them.
I certainley would, when most people go into a topic they have already been in they look at the end to see the new posts, so editing your posts no good as most people will miss them!

Anyway, apologies to everyone else for the rant.

Loving the work Wazz

Very nice model! Cant wait to see more from you and the army.

The pain of doing this is that people have thier own view of how thy would like to see a certain model/army and you can never saticefiy the masses.

In the case of moddeling something that all ready have a 3D form in the shape of miniatures it might be a big hard not to create them as they look as people are used to see them on the table top. That said i dont change is sometimes good and if you feel great about what you did, then let no one take that away from you (and it is great looking) :)

This is the eternal question. Do i listen to the fans or do as i think is best. Maybe 50/50?

Keep up the good work.

Yeah, well done. And Tyranids are exoskeletal, but they don't have full ones- partially soft-bodied with some areas having hydrostatic skeleta. I think.

4th Jun 04, 4:02 AM
Just a note I did preface my critism with a question asking whether he was making up his own or copying the GW model, then I said if he was copying the GW model he should change what I suggested. If hes making up his own (which is cool cause there are multiple hive fleets) he can make it look well however he wants within reason, maybe this hive fleet absorbed a velocirapter like critter to make its hormiguants faster.. I suppose if he made up is own models that would be col giver more character and provide a good back story.. I still think the model is excellent, and yes I hope no more people come in here with they hey their copying the zerg (these kind of comments are why I think the tyranids were prolly not considered in the game in the first place maybe)

Umm.. This looks like a nice mix between the Alien and the Zergling :)

Er.. was this intended to be like this?

Yes Ilia, it was intended to be like this. You could define Tiranids as a mix between Zergs and Alien if it wasn't the fact that Tiranids are anterior to Zergs. What are you seeing it is and hormangaunt what is an assault modification of the Gaunt which is the basic warrior of the Hive fleets. You have yet to see much more biological monstruosities of Tiranids ! But yes, Tiranids are the alien (or the zerg if you want) of WH 40k universe.

Wazz: IMPRESSIVE model! Good work! I`'s such a nice Hormagaunt!
Anyway I dont know much about 3d models in videogames but 1900 polis are not much enough?

(Sorry, couldn't resist. :) )

Wazz
4th Jun 04, 10:51 AM
hah, the reason why you don't see as much carpace on the model is just because of that, it's a model, sure the horm will not have THAT much carpace, because it's soft, and easier to kill then for example, a warrior, which'll have like a thick hard skin of armour much like a beetle, compare a beetle to an ant, and you see where i'm heading, also the horm was a mix between a bird/dinosaur and a insect, because of it's speed...
The Genestealer for example will be more spider-like (don't take it literarilly) but the way it moves and such...

My thoughts on the warrior is that i'll use a prayin' mantis as "reference" for what an insect looks like, but well, that's the next model I'm creating so you'll hopefully get a preview pic tonight :)

Also, please remember this is the model which has yet to be skinned. ;)

Oh, and Wazz, 4th they have a potential for a 24" charge... freakin scary. Even so, my roommate's old t'au army could take them out on a 6x4... 4x4 it was nearly impossible since there was so little you could do to prevent a quick charge.

dewolfe
4th Jun 04, 1:31 PM
Sorry Wazz, I might have missed this, but do you have a site for your mod?

Also, do you have plans for death/hit/kill/attack animations? Changing the thread topic a bit, but for the hormies I though up a couple, and would like to see what other people can come up with! (Yes, that's a challenge!)

Death
- Hormie jumps at the target and is hit down in air before it can land a blow.

Hit
- Hormie is pushed down/back and legs go into a classic Spiderman brace. Hisses.

Kill
- Hormie jumps on target's chest and plunges it's talons into targets chest.
- Hormie jumps on target's chest and places talons either side of head. Snip.
- Hormie jumps on target's chest. Target grabs big talons. Hormie pokes out target's eyes with other limbs.

Attack
- Hormie clamps onto opponent's ankle.
- Classic X slash.
- Verticle slash.
- Dual horizontal slash.

Talos
4th Jun 04, 1:34 PM
those are good ideas for animations.
Death
hormie is hit falles to ground sm put foot on head and crushes it.

For all the people requesting changes: Remember that the fluff text of nids contribute them with rapid genetic mutations to adapt to any environment. There is no single hormagaunt. Theres a class of creatures that are fairly similar, that are called hormagaunts.

Heck, in 3rd ed you could give your hormagaunts wings if you wanted.

Cool artwork.

ShineDog
4th Jun 04, 2:14 PM
and you still can in 4th

The nids have gigantic living spaceships called Hiveships. they are just as potent in space battle as any other kind of fleet.

Er.. was this intended to be like this?

Hmm... Shh... Let's put it this way.. Warcraft should read Warhammer. Starcraft should read Warhammer 40K.

Blizzard stole in my book. What you wrote is what you probably think, which isn't unwarranted, all things considered. Well, let's just say that DoW is the real deal. And to think that people said it copies from other games. I think Games Workshop could copy everything and not be liable for ANY damages, such is the extent of the copying of their Intellectual Property that they had to put up with. Your post is one of the reason I am REALLY hoping DoW will succeed. So it can set straight some unknown truths.

Maximus Kane
5th Jun 04, 6:19 PM
Kick ass model....

As for the people that this it should look more armored when it is dumbed down to be put in game it will give it a slightly more angular look, and with a some cleaver use of textures this could easily be achieved.

Keep up the good work!

*Edit: What size is it compared to a space marine just out of intrest?*

Wazz, don't worry about pleasing everyone lol, do the mod for your own sake and know that if its good enough people in general will dl it, very nice model btw.

Polycount wise tho, almost 2000, is that wise for in game because CnC Gen has like 600 polygon models to avoid lag...
I am no expert WH40K person so I dunno about units being perfect, but is there any way to have units come out looking different like a few variations? would that be a good thing?

tum te tum. polycount is the main thing, but w/e i have a good computer.
keep up the good work man... and get anyone you know that models to join in... and anyone they know.. etc

IWAssassin
6th Jun 04, 2:57 PM
According to Shadione the infantry models in DoW have around 2000 polys, with the larger models [tanks, monsters] having even more than that. So thus far everyone's goal has been 2000 polys.

Triceron
6th Jun 04, 5:21 PM
Few of us currently know how the LOD (Level of Detail) system works in DoW, so few of us have made optimized versions of units too. The 2000 polycount limit is for the high detailed close-ups, but there will be lower count models in the game when LOD is in effect, whether the engine takes care of this or if we have to add it it.

If it is not too much, this is a tiny bit of critisism.

All tyranids have 6 limbs, not 8.

Sorry.

Brother Jonah
22nd Jun 04, 5:56 PM
It only has 6 limbs - the extra limb you think you see is actually the counterpart to the one on this side of the model hanging beneath the torso...

dont mean to put anyone off but a guy at GW head office told me there will be nids and lots of other armies in a number of add ons.... not to sure if just a rumour but i have good reason to trust him. oh and by the way if u give a hormagaunt wings its not a hormagaunt anymore cause then it cant have leaping. thus its a gargoyol with sything tallons not a flesh borer, so u would have to name it somit else

FireWarriorUK
30th Jul 04, 4:37 AM
They should be adding new races, new units etc in future expansion packs, but that doesn't mean that modders should wait to see what's announced, if Tyranids get included in a future expansion pack then you could still use the Tyranid mod that is in progress here (awesome work by the way!), it's just a case of what you prefer to use.

It might save us some cash as well :D
