View Full Version : Why do the Eldar have bullet heads?

Farseer
14th Jun 04, 1:43 AM
The Eldar bullet heads look cool for some reason, I don't know why they appeal to me... but i wonder why do they have them? Do they need them for communications and electrical stuff or is it for some cultural significance?

WarpSpider
14th Jun 04, 1:49 AM
To make up for the fact that they didn't give them pointy ears?

Farseer

It's not really the heads, it's mostly the helmets. Even then I think they just like the style. I don't think it's for any particularly practical reasons.

SpartanArchon
14th Jun 04, 2:39 AM
Eldar ears arn't that long :D

What makes you think that? They ARE highly evolved elves, albeit elves with phenomonal psychic capabalities and state-of-the-art laser technology... Elves always have long pointy ears - and it would be too uncomfortable to fold them inside their helmets, so they figured, what the hell, let's get tall pointy helmets as well! They also double up as weapons and kebab skewers.

Cmdr_Adeon
14th Jun 04, 2:42 AM
Because in WFB both High Elves and Dark Elves have tall pointy helmets.

SpartanArchon
14th Jun 04, 2:44 AM
Cmdr, that is also because of my reason above - the long ears.

Cmdr_Adeon
14th Jun 04, 2:48 AM
True, but my point was more that when they made the Eldar they gave them the helmets to increase the resembalance to Elves. Rather than why they were wearing them. If you look at the ears on the Eldar models, they aren't actually that big.

BlackTemplar
14th Jun 04, 3:15 AM
They have to look different than the other armies, and the the Space Marines called shotty on the normal, round helmets.

"Ahh, balls. We have to wear a cock on our head now."
I did not need that image floating around in my head. Oh well...

Farseer
14th Jun 04, 3:58 AM
Agreed. :)

What about if an Eldar soldier was in the bush and his damn helmet just sticks out? I say it is a disadvantage for the Eldar in a couple of ways. I mean any enemy of the Eldar would aim for their heads.

ionfish
14th Jun 04, 4:07 AM
When they're wandering round in bright red or white armour I should think the helmet is the last of their worries.

Like much else in Warhammer 40,000, this can be explained by the application of a simple principle. Why do the Eldar have pointy heads? Because it's a part of their tabletop image. Like the pointy tanks. It helps make them unique.

morquendi
14th Jun 04, 4:09 AM
Well, I guess it could kinda give their position away, but who cares if they die as long as it's in style? :D

Also, it could be like a fooling thing. Like, if the helmet's real big, a dumb Ork could aim at it, hit it, except fail to hurt the eldar at all cuz he hit the high crest of the helmet. And while the dumb Ork wonders why the eldar can live with a bolter shell in the head, the eldar CUT IT DOWN!!!! Pwwarrrrr.

And, I was under the impression that the Eldar would have designed their helmets long before the Space Marines. :)

This just proves my theory that the IG are the most intellegent race in the galaxy. Why? Because they actually use colours that blend into the background!

Darkvisage
14th Jun 04, 4:21 AM
perhaps because they NEED to hide? and the well protected and generally superior Eldar guardians don't need to?

Farseer
14th Jun 04, 4:26 AM
The Eldar use speed, believing there is no need for frickin camo. Meh, at least rangers are sort of smart but lol, imagine a stalingrad fight between a Human scout and a Eldar Ranger. It would be easy seeing a cone going through the rubble.

Imperial Guard arn't exactly the smartest. I mean look at the Valhallans.... they believe they are 20th century Soviets or something.

ionfish
14th Jun 04, 4:27 AM
You mean the well protected Guardians with the same 5+ save?

This is about what looks good on a 28mm figure, not realism in warfare.

Annatar
14th Jun 04, 4:34 AM
I would say they have tall helmets for the same reason as many historical races. That is to increase their stature and make them look more impressive and intimidating on the battlefield.

The crests on Greek and Roman helms, as well as the ornaments on Japanese helmets all serve this purpose (among others ie. identification of officers/individual warriors)

Basicly its a psycological thing.

Eldar= If i die, i will die well dressed.
Orc= Me orc, No need for armour, me squish puny aliens with bare hands
Space Marine= Ha Ha! That tickles!
Imperial Guardsmen= Take Cover and pray they don't see us!
Chaos= Organic flesh is big in fashion

Er, or maybe if GW painted every army for every race in camo, we'd get very bored?

imagine a stalingrad fight between a Human scout and a Eldar Ranger. It would be easy seeing a cone going through the rubble.

hahaha

BTW, Imperial Guard are right up there in my books, read a few Gaunts Ghosts novels and you will have respect for these guys. Oh yeh on the TT they suck, but apply real life to the TT and you'd be amazed...

Farseer, "Ork" is spelled with a "k" in this millennium.

Stature is probably it. The DE would look much less intimidating without the plume and/or blades on their helmets. And it's much easier to ridicule Eldar when you can call them pointy-'eads. :D

TheWatcher
14th Jun 04, 6:16 AM
And it's much easier to ridicule Eldar when you can call them pointy-'eads. :D

Hence why GW did it. :p Which just goes to show, everybody needs somebody to ridicule (I could bring up a number of examples, but fear the as yet unjudged PC of the board...)

Space Marines: Marine-Boyz

like alot of you guys said they do it purly for good loks that will protect and because marines are well armored super soldiers they feel the need to be seen, so bright colours all round!
and the guard, well they just use good old style cammo it looks cool and it works as for CSMs things that will be erie to the enemy work fine, along with spikes

them and blending in is hardly an issue with their armor. trying to have armies of people hide in bushes isn't an easy thing to do. they would have to worry about alot more than their helmets sticking out of a bush.

NjalStormcall

I can't believe people are trying to rationalise why the Eldar have tall helmets… why are the Orks green? Do they photosynthesize? No! If they had fat round helmets then they would look pretty daft compared to their generally sleek design.

dewolfe
14th Jun 04, 12:11 PM

Actually, in 3rd ed, that is the reason why they are green.

Breaking news flash: This just in from the 40K 3rd edition rulebook, and I quote:''Sealed helm, surmised functions include communications and environmental systems.''

The preceding statement is a classified imperial description on the fonctioning of eldar mesh armor. And more specificaly the pointy helmet.

Nuff said folks. :thumb:

yes, but why must it be pointy? its just a justification.
I agree with ionfish, its just looks good on the mini. Just like the cadians like the traditional 'elite futureistic infantryman' look right now, but you never know. Come 4th or 5th ed gamers everywhere might suddenly feel that the napoleonic look is all the craze.

Also, with orks they call:

dewolfe

One of the ways to properly make fun of SMurfs is to capitalize the SM, which can stand for Space Marine. Add in the blue armour and white helmets of the Ultra SMurfs 1st company, and you get the idea where the nickname comes from.

yes, but why must it be pointy? its just a justification.

Well since I've determined that the extra space on top in the pointy part is used up by their environmental controls and communications gear the appearance comes down to a question of looks.

They could have a big afro :ds: on top of their heads instead for the stuff but it wouldn't be very pretty now would it.

I think Celine Dion and the like do a better job at promoting violence than most rap singer. I mean people get soooo agressive when they hear "My heart will go on".

well i certainly dont agree that it calmes everyone down. rap is the only form of lyrical music i have ever heard racist, sexist, homophobic lyrics in. so if that doesn't insight violence and intolorance then why do neds(scotland) townies(england) cause so much trouble and give teenagers a bad name... they are the ones that listen to rap music :P

King Raa
16th Jun 04, 12:28 PM
Because the meaning is spelt out by the words of the song, thus they needn't expend brain power on such things as big words and titles, like, any song called reroute to remain would put a townie off, they'd be like "wtfs that, it sounds all gothic like innit"

Inflames fan, you heard club connected?

Anyway classical music would best suit the opera of war.

Still off topic,

Hmm I don't agree with you Nightbringer, though I agree that 98% of rap song's lyrics say non sense and BS (lol). But it's not because the words are crap that you have to listen to them. IMO if people let their way of life being dictated by music, they're weak and should get some will power and self-esteem help (they're good candidates for CHAOS influence ;)). Unless they really believe in that stuff...

I mainly listen to music for the beats, those that you can actually DANCE on them :agree:. I listen to anything that can make feet move on the dance floor, like techno, rap/hiphop, disco, jazz, reggae, arabic music, merengue, swing, and my all time favorite being salsa ( I ownzor at salsa)

This post is just wayyy out there by now...

I Don't exactly know what units are being fielded in the game but consider that a lot of The Eldars specialist troops have very advanced weaponry in their helmets. Banshees for instance have an advanced shockamplifier-thingy and striking scorpions have a big laser. those devices have to take up some space... Besides I also agree with the Cool-factor (especially considering that the Eldar are by far the most arrogant race in existence), it's the same with Chaos Marines' horns. not great for hide and seek, but damn intimidating up close and personal.
