What do you think of it?

the revision summary available here:
http://oz.games-workshop.com/40kuniverse/warhammer40k/rulebook-update/default.htm

"The summary is a brief glimpse at some of the new rules changes that will be seen in the new Warhammer 40,000. Obviously, this is a limited overview and is by no means comprehensive, but it does give you a taste of the exciting developments in the grim universe of the 41st millennium. Also, this overview assumes you have extensive knowledge of the existing rulebook and have played enough games to be considered a "veteran" gamer. The new Warhammer 40,000 rulebook will be released in September 2004. Look for more information and updates in the White Dwarf magazine and on the Games Workshop web site."

i think its a good thing, no more using troops as shield.. possibly more tactical, not just everything charges forward and owns the opponent.. not that thats not gonna happen..

bleh. so this means i need to wait for an assload of time before i can start a new army. or at least till i can get a rulebook that is not partially invalidated by a new one in 4 months. i was hoping they'd hurry it up a little ;)

you dont really have to wait to make a new army, jsut use your existing codex now, then when the nu one comes out, jsut tweak your roster to match

I've been out of this for almost 18 months so bear with me, but is this the rulebook incorporating the new simplified (and much better) assault rules? Or this is this a general over haul?

its not so much an overhaul as a face lift but i still think that ig troops and ork players useing gretchen mobs are getting screwed on the meatshield thing

if you go to the games-workshop website, it tells you that it isn't a complete overhaul... and in fact its making the rules far more indepth and complicated, instead of the simply crap ruls of the 3rd eddition

BRING BACK SUSTAINED FIRE!!! I WANT MY ASSAULTCANNON TO SHOOT UP2 9 TIMES NOT 3!!

Can the meat shield still work for other 'normal' units then, while Vehicles, Monstrous Units and Artillery cant be blocked?

(I haven't played for like 6 years)

When i went from playing 1st edition circa '95 to playing 3rd edition the removal of the sustained fire dice really did piss me off.

I like the new rules, they add a good new combat system (as in my Chaos rines can kick mopre ass now) and good ranged rules (ie. Defiler cannon right on top of unit) and new better outnumbhering rulez (=dreadnought of doom)

Strange about the no screening rule, i always played that anyway

Also, i heard somewhere that assault cannons might be getting a rending claws style rule which would make up for only getting 3 shots (I mean, it is a high calibre extremely high rate of fire death weapon)

yeah its a good combat system but why couldn't they jsut add that into the 2nd ed instead of completely oblitorating it

I hope so... as it stands ACs are only very marginally better than heavy bolters, S6 vice S5, but same rate of fire. I would think the AC would be able to make a lot more shots than the heavy bolter.

I dont understand "Units must charge the enemy they shot at"
what if the unit is using a long range gun e.g., 72" they cant reach the enemy that turn so they have to assault each turn till they reach their enemy????????????

Only if they want to assault, its probably a miswording

Yeah they'll probaly have it in more detail when the rule book comes out :D

it basically means that if you ahve a unit moving to assault the enemy, if you shoot at a unit in the same turn as being in range of assault, they ahve to charg the unit they shot at. it dont mean that devastators who shoot at a tank have to move towards it so they can charge it

What he said above me, if you're going to charge and you fired your weapon it has to be those you fired at.

All of your previous armies and Codecies will be compatible with the new rules. Instead of asking if it will change the way your army fights, find out. There are two other threads abou this also.

So are they redoing the models? so they look different???

GW is redoing a few modeling ranges, most noteworthy I think being the Space Marines and some Tyranids. As for the new rules screwing over IG I have come across two things of interest. 1). The new rule about a Leadership test allowing you to target anything brings a whole new tatical spin on the use of Vox Casters, something I find thoroughly enjoyable and 2). It does not screw over players of Orcs and IG as badly as you think. On the contary, ALL units, even fearless ones, are affected (Fearless units make the test at -1 LD, which is okay considering it's 10)--this gives you a chance of screwing up. What happens when you do? The shots are wasted. It makes for a risk and a gamble, and can spice things up a lot. I've found the inclusion of the new rules most enjoyable.
