View Full Version : What army do YOU play?

This is for all those who play 40K in real life. As the title says, what army do you play?
Me, I'm still trying to decide on my first. It's either going to be Kroot Mercenaries or Minotaurs.
Fire away folks.

One of the Ill-Fated 21st Foundings. They're rules are in this years chapter approved.
One of THE most vicious SM armies loyal to the Imperium. Something very, very wrong with their gene-seed, their battle rage is much worse than any Space Marine.
I don't want to quote the rules exactly here, but for a small points cost, a little more for multi-wound units, your units get and extra attack in close combat, and those morale and pinning tests? They go right by those automatically. Unfortunatly, if something is in charging range, they must do so, even if they have no hopes of wounding it. An army of Berserkers.

Chaos World Eaters. I catch all sorts of stuff about how it's an easy army on the real GW forums, and how it requires no tactics or what-ever. Obviously tactics are not important when your whole army surges straight ahead, but army composition is sort of important when the only thing I have that shoots more than 24" is on heavy weapons which are the first things targetted ;).
Very fun army, and always gratifying when I Blood Frenzy and charge and inform my opponent that 35 Chain axes that make his 2 or 3 + armor save (usually playing Space Marines) a 4+ and 6 power-weapon attacks that get another hit if I roll a 6 (Mmm.. Axe of Khorne) are about to attack his squad.

I have posted this elsewhere, so I won't go into details. I play three armies, Spaces Wolves (primary), Dark Angels (secondary), Chaos/WorldEaters (fun). I wish to make all of them atleast 2500 points. BUt for my WorldEaters army, it might be more than that, seeing I am gonna shove as many 16-20 man Berserker squads as I can in it. Know what was funny. One time my friend and I played against each other, he took my chaos army, I took my space wolves. He got one berserker in amongst my 6 Long Fangs, and he took down 4 of them! I mean come on! My Wolf Guard Pack Leader had to take him down with his power sword. Sheesh, by the time this one little bastard was done, all I had left was a frickin plasma cannon...which fried itself next turn. Not one of my brighter games. :fight:

At the moment building a Dark Angel army. I hope to have the entire 3rd company one day. Additional to that, there will be numerous units of Ravenwing and Deathwing.
After that I'm thinking about a demonhunters army ( I like the style of the Grey Knights ). Or perhaps an Alienhunters army. Depends on their codex ( I've heared that there is one planned for 2005 ).

They're going to be combining Eldar and Dark Eldar, at least they're working on it.
They're moving to the idea that Eldar are on thw whole a dying race, and that it is made up of all sorts of Craftworlds, some good in a sense, some more evil, and the whole range in between. In other words, armies that include both Eldar and Dark Eldar units now.

Ah, what a coincidence. :)
I've got a Dark Angels Army, 3rd Company, right now I've built about half of the company total (3 tactical squads, assault squad, devastator squad, etc.), plus 3 Ravenwing land speeders.
I don't have plans to build further though after I finish my Whirlwind and Command Rhino.
I'm currently building a Cadian IG army (180th Cadian Regiment), and I am considering adding some Armageddon Steel Legions (love the World War I look of those guys).

lol, naive little chaos blokes... try beating 104 attacks w/ choppaz that make YUOR 2+/3+(i also usually play space marines) save a 4+... and 9 power weapon(Mmm..burnaz lol) attacks, and 5 power klaw/fist attacks...ALL AT DOUBLE INITIATIVE IF I CHARGE!!!!!!!!

Havent played since the demise of second edition WH40k, so my army values are in 2nd ed. points.
3rd Company UltraMarines- 7000 points
Black Legion/Sons of Horus Chaos Marines- 2500 points
Blood Axe klan Orks- 2500 points
also playing with the 2nd edition with my long time opponents... so never encounter Necrons, witch/demon hunter nor Tau
I play SM or eldar (both 2000 pts army) and I always play vanilla chapter/craftworld lists...(it's the rule in our club) but may change...
There was a long time since we played, but thanks to DoW, there's a rebirth of our club...let's wait for 4th edition to collect a demon hunter army (models are so nice)...

Chaos... could probably do 7-8,000 depending on options, usually fielded as true classic 2,000pt Khorne army (Berzerkers, Berzerker Champions, Blood Slaughterers, and for Daemon backup Bloodletters and a 'Thirster), 2,000pt Nurgle army, and 2,000pt weak mommy hugging "Chaos United" army. I ask you, what were they smokin' when they came up with "Chaos United"?
Tyranids... no retarded winged Tyrants or Tyrant Guard nonsense in this 3,500 point of termagant horde. Some other std. goodness in there as well, but you need the 60-90 termigants in front of the 20-40 'stealers.
Space Wolves... around 2,500pts worth. My second favorite backstory wise after Khornites.
"Generic" Space Marines (Roman/Grey-Bronze themed)... another 2,500pts
Eldar... another 2,500pts.
IG... A weak 2,000pts, mostly Necromunda gangs as guardsmen.
Sisters... maybe 500pts... will be building into a Witch Hunters force.
Orks... mix of Gorkamorka and classic orks.... 3,000pts worth.
No Dark Eldar (haven't came across a good trade to get me some yet).
Hmm... oh yeah, 2,000pts of pre-codex Necrons (raiders).
So many armies... not sure if I overlooked any. Oh heck, yeah, Tau, probably 2,000pts+ of those as well, but doubt they'll ever be assembled. They're a pack of johnny-come-lately Eldar wannabe's that GW had to release to make up for making a muck of the Eldar's cheese :) :) :) (j/k for those that don't get the joke!)

I play Dark Eldar.
As far as Eldar/DE/Harlies going into one codex, I wouldn't buy into it. It has been mentioned as a possiblity (although I can't seem to find the quote), but it was also said (in the same line) that it is a very unlikely one. Eldar will come out (possibly with Harlies) third or fourth in line, DE will come towards the end of the updates.
And as far as 'I heard it from a GW employee/GW Store Manager', remember to take it with a few pounds of salt. GW employees (especially store managers) are notorious for being bad sources of information. I mean, I've heard plenty of unbelievable (and usually untrue) rumours, and more often than not, it starts with 'my store manager told me about this...'.

I'm new to the warhammer 40k universe and all (not new to rts games though and really lookin forward to DoW), played chaos gate the old comp game way back when and looked around gamesworkshop's web site a lot(mainly because i think the figures look cool and all). But I always thought of getting an army, the biggest reason i havent is because of the lack of others around me that play it.
I have a Q though, is it possible to have a fallen angels chaos army? I mean theres cypher and his fallen angels and all, so a converted dark angel army w/ some chaos stuff on it etc. maybe some demons and all to show just how far theyve fallen. I always thought the idea was pretty cool, if its not even possible though let me know, please dont flame me because as i said, im new to warhammer 40k and was just curious.

I play,
Eldar ( my own craftworld) Just thousands of points, enough for two full organisation detachments. Including a phoenix bomber and a scratch built scorpion super heavy grav tank (before forgeworld brought a model out)
Tyranids (own hive), lots of mutants and conversion work, only need 2 carnifexs and all slots filled for a detachment.
Eldar (saim hann) still making this one, have a converted HQ unit on jetbikes, and a converted Nuadhu.
Orks, a few thousand points, lots of wartrukks, many converted orks of various types (many taken from gorkamorka and space crusade)
Double Post
oh and I'd like to mention that I've been playing W40k since it came out in the 80's and it seems as though the recent edition was good when it started but things have just got ridiculous....I remember a time when playing Eldar meant Space Wombles and their Chaotic cousins got scared. And the shootiest army suddenly became the Tau...pah...well in my gaming group it is.

Has anyone ever seen a Fallen Angel army? How would you go about converting that if you were to make one of your own, take dark angels and add on chaos stuff or try to convert chaos marines into a more fallen angel type of look, or something else? sorry for all the Qs but i'm really thinking about making one, even if it would probably suck since i'd just be getting into the game and trying stuff like that.
--EDIT--
Oh and Njal, where did you find that Cypher and the other fallen regret no longer having a faith? Not calling you a liar but just curious where I can get more info on them.

Exetus
8th Jul 04, 8:57 AM
Why not? It's one hell of an investment. The reason I have the other armies is that it's easy to get bored with one force and they let me have other options to play. Also, my friends who have no armies can use mine, or can augment their current forces with my models and not having an army is never an excuse to not play around me.
Also, some of my models aren't even in the GW archives anymore. I have old inquisitors in termie armor, the original IG models, some original Mk VII beakies. Plus, every year we (my friends and I) play a massive 10k pts per player battle or more if you have it. I simply take up the space of two players and the game takes just about all weekend.

I used to play ultramarines. i was beaten almost every game (i hate biel tann) but i just like all the background of ultras. I stopped for quite a while, i was too busy with other things but now i want to start again. I thought about an imperial guard army from ultramar using valhallans and basing them the same is my marines, but now im interested in an inquisitorial army. i cant really pick wether to be deamon or witch hunters, but im quite tempted by the new battle sisters. by the way, is there any info on an ordo xenos codex (alienhunters)? a deathwatch army would be fun!

I know rules for deathwatch killteams, I've got that copy of white dwarf. I was just thinking of all the extra deathwatch units possible in an ordo xenos codex. The nice things about using inquisition would be that I could probably use my existing army to provide extra units before I finish painting and buy ing specific units, and i could potentially start a new army using IG once i had enough in my inquisitors retinue.
I've never seen daemon hunters used outside of White dwarf, does anybody have them?

Lord_Maccarage
8th Jul 04, 12:40 PM
I was just wondering how they play and how difficult they are to collect and use. I'm a reasonably experienced player, but a lot of that experience is my nice blue marines being on the wrong end of starcannnons, reaper launchers and rending claws. I was thinking that a inquisitor army has potential for both the elite troops I've used and the cheaper mass units I've always wanted to gve a try.
Exetus
8th Jul 04, 1:22 PM
The good think about Daemonhunters or Witch Hunters is that they are easy to start with, simply by allying them to your current army. The DH Inquisitor is a formidable foe with a lot of potential. His retinue is more based around fire support than a WH Inquisitor, but they allow for some great abilities. WH Inquisitors seem to be a bit more oriented for up-close fighting with the Crusader and healer members of the retinue.
Currently I eschew the use of Grey Knights which makes my army a little hard to play but I like the challenge. Instead, I use daemonhosts and allied IG to provide some good fire support (Leman Russ Battle Tank).
What you'll have to get used to is that a pure DH force is pretty small. If you don't use GKs, then you're using Inquisitorial storm troopers as your troops which are good for shooting. Then you have to rely upon your HQs and Elites for most of your close in stuff. But with death-cult assassins, an Eversor and daemonhosts, you can do a good job in close.
If you use allied units, such as Space Marines, you can have a core DH/WH force with powerful troops to help out, which is what I support if you like to use daemonhosts, etc.
And of course you can use Grey Knights. They are expensive but, by and large, they are worth it. I like to use my GK Brother-Captain and his command squad in a Land Raider Prometheus with two squads of GKs in power armor and then another couple as deep striking fast attack with a dreadnought or two tossed into the mix. A GK force is hard to hit from a distance and with their initiative based +2S Nemesis Force Weapons, no slouches in CC either.
It's a powerful but small force. Well balanced and a challenge to use, but worth it, I think. GK's biggest drawback is that aside from the Dread or tanks, they have no true ranged fire support. You can take psycannons or incinerators in your squads but no other heavy weapons.

I used to play as the Thousand Sons. Had a few converted squads of them, a squad of Possessed Marines, Tzeentch, 2 sorcerors, a converted Chaos Lord, Agahnim, Dreadnought, the whole deal. But, the painting grew annoying, so I just played with a half-colored, half-plastic grey army with my friends. After a while, it died down, but I'm still very interested in the whole 40K mythos.
I currently play Tau but im gonna make a Imp. Guard Armored Company. :)

I hope they have my mega Force packet next weak, so that I can really start building my army.

Haven't played in a year or so, but have separate hosts of space wolves and dark angels. used to love seeing a tyranid players face when i pulled out the long fangs, blood claws and grey hunters. Marine fire power followed by actual ability to fight up close... magic. Throw in the wolfguard and an eversor assassin and you've got mass of teeth and claws nicely package in power armour.

My Dark Angels army contains 20 assault marines and 15 terminators, of which 5 are close assault

I am starting with Eldar. Got the Eldar Codex, but did not got enough money for the rulebook, and I should not get one now cause I heard that there would be a new one soon. So I am studying the Codex, without knowing any rules.
Maybe someone out there that likes to help me with some basic rules?

Dark Eldar is the way to go dudes.Well at least for me.I creamed my brothers Dark Angels.I think the only challenge will be Orkz and Eldar.
I only have a small skirmishing squad with ten Warriors, one Archon guarded by a six Incubi retinue, and one Talos.

I hate Space Marine Players there is too many of them.
Go with Imperial Gaurd, or Kroot Mercs.

looks like I picked a great 2 posts to follow up on, BUT:
I play Space Marines. Before I am tarred and/or feathered, let me just say that I actually looked at everything first, and personally liked Space Marines best. That's all I will say. I actually liked Tyranids a bit too, but my greatest rival plays them...
I currently have 1,500 pts., and am going to expand with an attack bike, land speeder squadron, a couple transports, a Predator and Terminators. After I can field an army that can be mixed and matched enough to handle most enemies, I was thinking of collecting some either Imperial Guard, Tyranids or Tau. I tend to prefer a bit more shooty armies though, so probably IG or Tau. Now, which one... I think I'll look at the Codex, special rules, weapons, etc. available for them. I think I'll also ask some veteran players at the local club. And if you don't mind, I'll ask you. What are the pros/cons of each?

No, go guards there so cool with there hoards of basic troopers with big nasty tanks behind them.

I expected that :-D
I must admit, I AM leaning towards Imperial Guard. The thoughts of a half dozen Leman Russ' and a ton of infantry bristling with heavy weaponry is certainly appealing...
Unless the Tau have other inducements besides being orange and in power armor?

crisis battle suit can wipe out a squad of ig and have a 3+ armor save :D
If you worry that gurads aren't tough (which they need to be...there just so many of them) there are the options to play deamon/witch hunter forces. So now you have your shiny grey knight termies that teleport in fron of some "tau crisis suits" and guess what? they are in crisis! str. 6 power weapon! mwahaha... GO IMPERIALS!

Okay, here we go!
Dark Eldar, Tau, Orks, Imperial Guard, Witch Hunters, Space Wolves and two Black Templar armies. By the gods I despise Chaos, or more accurately Chaos players, but I'm tempted to start a Lost and the Damned army consisting mainly of traitors and using the allies rules to integrate Chaos Space Marine allies. What can I say? The models offer some good modelling options!
