View Full Version : Counterhacking?

I wonder if you all think counterhacking is right. I know it's illegal, but it's like fighting back if a criminal attacks you etc.
I'm not a hacker, nowhere close, and don't intend to be, I'm just curious about whether you think two wrongs make a right or not...

btw I know it's actually "cracker" not "hacker", but hacker is the commonly used term nowadays.

"White Hacker" would be the term I would use...
so long as you're not causing harm to anyone else, who cares?

Well then in that case you wouldn't have much luck. The script kiddies are at least smart enough to run a software firewall and maybe have 2 or 3 computers so they have a nice NAT between them and you. They are even more unlikely to be running things like a web server etc. Sure, by all means, hack them back - if you can.

Someone released a virus on our LAN at college that kept crashing computers. Almost everyone on my floor re-formated thier hard drive. After finding out that he did it on purpose I decided to get him back. So I sent the virus back to him, cut off his LAN connection and showed him that it aint too fun to do that too people.

heh...i have a few friends who sit in the Demilitarized zone between a company's router and its firewall all day taggin the IP's of port scanners and actual attackers....

if someone keeps trying what they're trying, they don't attack themselves (it's too great a liability) they call up the FBI and say "hey, tap into our DMZ, we have something to show you" and let the feds deal with it....

Hmmm...interesting idea for a movie...
A small software company company getting slamed by hackers...
The Feds dont bother messing with a case that small...
So they have to learn how to defend themselves...:ninja:
Or simply die out.

A nice twist would be finding out its actually a huge company trying to steal theyre ideas.

Sounds awful. Like an action movie minus guns or any fighting whatsoever.

Screw counter-hacking, just track down their identity and pay one of the local thugs to visit their home with a baseball bat, preferable when they're home

Script kiddie go splat!

Violence may not solve problems, but it sure is a great way to relieve stress, especially when applied to annoying little smart-asses.

Next thing you know there will be a totally new armed force... the computer force! Entire virus battles will take place over the net, sites being blown up much like a bridge would! Luckily, some civilians might have enough money for net bunkers!

What a future...

So, do you care?

That wasnt what I meant, but I'm too damn tired to explain further right now...

Silver Quasar - it happens allready.

Kinda, go ahead and "counter-hack". But spend a few weeks reading up and getting some deacent programs first. Because otherwise, you're karma will mean you just picked on a pro and he'll make your hard disk eat itself....

I prefer finding out who hacked me, getting their secrets then striking back that way.but most ppl don't have my contacts.

Well here is my take on it.

99.99% of people who actaully have l33t skillz do not hack. Why? because that takes effort, and I would rather waste it configuring my network, or writing up some interesting algorythim, or figuring out the new features in mySQL dbase optimization configurations.

Though I did enjoy hacking into my friends website a few months back to help him figure out how to secure it, but hey, its all good.

Look, noone has ever manged to hack in any of machines, so, I have no sympathy for bad administration, but if I decided to start up IIS and left for vacation and someoen took it over or started screwing with my software, if I found out where they lived, I would set thier house on fire. (j/k, maybe.....)

I think those dam script kiddies whould go and learn somethign productive. actually learn about IP, or Java, or C++.

might change thier perspective if they had to learn something or work really hard to get a cool piece of code to work and forgo getting laid at a wild campus party in the pursuit of intellectual endavours.

My 2 cents

White-hat hacking is good, such as finding invulnerablilites in security and fixing them. Any other type is bad, such as counter-hacking (and illegal, too).

P.S. I agree that they probably have a decent sense of morals, too. My uncle knows how to hack, but he will never teach me, or anyone else, how to hack. Why? Because he's not stupid and he has a decent sense of morals.

What do you all think of hacking the Anti-Christ in Left Behind?

Double Post

What are they going to attack next? Compilers!

Scenario: Software vendor has good intentions, and this time they use tight controlls to make sure that there are no security holes in their programs. But unknown to them, their compiler is corrupt. It automatically attaches a worm to every copy they compile.

For your sins, you should burn your copy of counterstrike and never play it again, ever. I hate that damn game...*shudders at the thought of playing it again*

jasonc65, DONT BUMP OLD THREADS.

Actually, I'm going to reopen this for the comic value of a two-year and eight-month old thread getting bumped. Let the spam ensue. For awhile.

Hey everyone! There's a new funny video out called "All your base are belong to us!"

You can watch it here: http://www.planettribes.com/allyourbase/index.shtml

Man, with that kind of comedy, 2002 is going to be a big year for the intarweb!

ps fisher: google search indexes.

Pike, the search function is apparently still working. :luff:

Reki, AYB was 'hot' in 2001 at the latest. I was discussing it with a friend over rotations and putting labels on his reagents "ALL YOUR Tris EDTA ARE BELONG TO ANDREW." I thought the Overclocked dub was much funnier than the flash video with all the signs, though.

I found this thread with google. I was looking for any thread on any forum about counterhacking. I've found forums in which threads grow at one post per month.
