View Full Version : The Horus Heresy mod

The Horus Heresy is great material for battles, with cooler armies than M41, cooler technology, and a better plot.
Now how about we make a Horus Heresy mod, with new units for each race from the Heresy and maybe even a totally new army!
Basically, Marines would require a little in the way of changes to armour and to be able to have jetbikes and Chaplains, Chaos would need big changes (Raptors to Reaver squads, Cult Marines, and armour changes), Orks could just get more stuff from the Codex that didn't get in, and Eldar... well they don't fit in, maybe they could be substituted for the new race: Adeptus Mechanicus, who fought on both sides, could have a very shooty focus with their "big" unit being the Castellan class combat robot, they would have Forge Levy (think Guardsmen with bolters) as basic troops, Mechanicum Protectors as moderate troops, Tech-Adepts, a Magos in an antigravity litter, vehicles like the Eviscerator Engine, and maybe some other vehicles we can dream up.

The thing about the Horus Heresy is that it makes a better movie than it does a game. The reason mostly IMO is because of diversity. Remember that back during the Horus Heresy that a lot of the newer vehicles that seperate the current SMurfs with the CSM haven't been created yet, and a lot of units would end up being very similar without a lot of diversity.
It'd be really cool to see heroes fight it out too, I guess the characters would be the only reason I'd have for playing it, to relive those epic battles. But strategically i think it would be lacking, unless something is changed.

I was contemplating this. Basically it would have Space Marines (loyal and traitor, both the same because there was heaps of confusion and even the traitors didn't fully turn), Adeptus Mechanicus (with their plasma projectors etc) and Custodian Guard who will be facing off against the Sons of Horus (more chaosy).
i dno. I like all the history stuff. I like that the game has depth. but... you have to think of this...
A - Many of the modders thus far (and theres bound to be a HUGE influx the moment of the games release) will be working on recreating their imediate Armys, eager to see them get a share of the glory on the new battleground that is the PC.
B- There are not enough Acurate documentations on the heresy to make a full and comprehencive and realistic army list. if there is, i humbly withdraw this. but the thing is that i cant see anyone but the makers of the game itself actually creating a valid army for any of the sides involved.
C - The Orks werent limited by the Imperiums Strict laws on Technology and change. I dont think the orcs would have had more then and less now. they have always kept around the same technology. and they loot most of their stuff. I couldnt even say "oh theyed be much more rugged and barbaric" cause that aint true. they are still, now just as rugged and barbaric as they always have been.
I dno, take it as you will. i agree with Triceron. it would make a better film than a mod. i say concentrate on makeing 40k now complete in the game. not working on things that Left wing just yet...

Well there is great documentation in the form of all the torrents of fluff created for the card-game of the Heresy, which is all official. Find a complete card listing for just the start of the Heresy stuff (down the bottom there's lots of fluff) here: www.pa-sy.com/hhccg. Also there are the White Dwarf articles on the Heresy.

I'd love to see this mod, sieging the Emperor's palace on Terra, and seeing primarchs wading through the action.
But I dont think there are really enough modders to be able to complete this project.

I think it be it bit boring, I think theres easily enough modders, its just that the whole idea was that not all marines were chaos yet, more like renegades.
So take 2 loyalist marine sides in DoW and fight each other, it really wouldn't be much better unless you actually wanted to do models of the old Land Raider and old Rhino, but they're both far weaker models.
I don't think theres loads of work to do this, I just don't think its that great an idea, sorry like.
Best bit of this would be an Adeptus Mechanicus faction, don't forget the Skitarii (sp?)
Yeah how do you put in a link to your own avatar?

he has his own avatar - probably cos one of the moderators likes his models so said "here have an avatar"
its like custom ranks - moderator given only.

I have the old rogue traitor book on hand and I'm pretty sure that it has some info on the horus heresy.
What do u need to know? What chapters were traitors and which ones were loyal?
Where battles were fought?

We know 9 chapters that were traitor, 9 that were loyalist, some oddity about the start of these allegiances, and most battles. Though if there's some information which is not commonly available please post it!

Take a look at the SoB model... skinning isn't too hard if you know what you're doing. BTW, some of the best games are mods and/or created by independents.

I like the idea of Primarchs and angron etc. tho there no possible way the current DoW engine could cope with entire space marine legions. were talking 10'000 marines per chapter.
Tho u could Micro size special missions - like for instance when the white scars took the main space port on earth back from chaos. so u could do a small part of that mission.
Or even Sanguinus holding the gates long enough for his fallen sons to get back - and finnaly fighting a blood thirster in 1 on and 1 combat.
I dont belive u can capture the full battle for earth but u could focus on small parts of it.
