I'm an avid gamer, both pc and table top games, and i've been interested in playing war hammer 40k for years, but i've never really gotten into it. This is because:
1: until now didnt have the cash
2:dont have the painting skills needed to not be shamed at our local game shop tourny's
3:Until now, there wasnt any good sized community where i live, but now there is.
So really, i'd like to know how much time and money would i have to invest to pick this hobby up? If i suck at painting will i be able to make my army look decent at all? I love Dawn of War (got into the beta :D ) and now im really edging towards the TT game. Any suggestions?

depending on what army you want you'll be investing around $500-1000 Australian on models, equipment, paints..etc
dont expect to ba able to paint golden demon standards when you begin, ive been painting 8 years and am only ok at it now. if there is a local GW store around ask them on painting tips. theyll either tell you some valuable info or tell you a method which involves you investing yet more money on paint...

40k in 40 mins is cheaper, right?
slightly offtopic:
how much would a 500-1000 point army cost?
an estimate, just to have a figure :p

I'd say about $250 (US) would give you a nice starting army, around 1000 points or a bit more.

perhaps i should stick to the computer version, which from what i've read on this forum is pretty close to the real thing, and invest in my comp, and school.

the game may be kindof the same thing but (in my opinion) i would have alot of fun as well on the table top game. i donno, sometimes using tape messurers and moving models around a board while rolling dice to see if you hit something is a little more fun than a RTS game... sometimes...

yeah i agree with you, while computer games are one of my passions in life, nothing really beats spending hours in a smelly basement or comic book shop with a good group of geeks and playing a table top game together, with pizza and bawls (www.bawls.com if your unfamiliar with it) to go around. Whether your playing D&D WH:40k or just plain ol' axis and allies, nothing beats that true gaming experience.
