There are no truly good 3D WW2 RTS games at the moment. Why not a mod?
I was just thinking Dawn of War would be the perfect base for a WW2 mod, due to the squad-based action and resource system. Here's my idea:
We get together a mod team, preferably with some people experienced in WW2 modding and WW2 in general, and make a 4-army mod. The armies are:
Allies: The Allies for these purposes exclude Russia, whose tactics are different and deserve a different army. Basically, this game is after Normandy and the Allies therefore have some air superiority over the Axis. They get troops in on transport aircraft, deep-strike troops can paradrop. Basic troops are Recon teams which are fast-moving with an Infiltration upgrade, essentially similar to 40k scouts, and the builder is an engineer with demolition capabilities- can plant bombs. Then there are normal infantry, elite paratroops, etcetera, as well as the complement of real-world WWII allied tanks. I think a language/accent option would be nice, so you could have British, American, French, maybe even Australian (Kokoda trail anyone?) accents and more. Airstrikes are available as an ability from a building.
Axis: The Axis have very strong troops, with suitable German unit names. As I know no German, other people will have to make these up. Bikers (Blitzkrieg often included motorbike troops) are a possible interesting unit. Troop delivery could be by plane maybe, but we mght keep that for the Allies just for stylistic reasons, anyone else have an idea? Anyway they get really nasty weapons like squads of SS with flamethrowers, and maybe even a gas weapon (I know they didn't use them that much in WW2, except on Russia, but it acts to reinforce their evil nature and as an interesting weapon). A spotter unit could be basic with maybe upgrades to increase sight, and target for V2 missiles. Very good weaponry in general.
Japan: The Japanese have extreme morale as fanatics, and have good air and troops who are not afraid to die as long as they take their foes down too. They can get kamikaze troops, and are essentially quite mobile with good morale and can't be taken alive! Iknow little about them in reality, others can fill this in.
Russia: Russia are the token horde army. They have lots of troops, copious "Comrade!" cries (builder squads- Comrades?), and they basically have poor morale, relying on Commisars (minor characters- about Warlock level) who boost nearby morale. However, they can kill you if you break... But the Russians also have the usual tanks, artillery and APCs so they're not all infantry. Lots of weak-ish units though, who get better under stern leadership. I don't know about how they could get troops, maybe a convoy will come from the nearest map edge to bring in lots of guys, or they could just be recruited on the spot.
But basically, this is a highly-realistic mod, with some artistic license for cool stuff, and input is great.
