View Full Version : How do I enable compatibility mode in 2000/XP
7th Apr 02, 12:26 PM
The easiest way to do this is to put a shortcut to HW/HWC on the desktop. Otherwise you could just go into your start menu and right click the shortcut you use to launch them regularly, then select properties.
There should be a compatibility tab besides general and shortcut. If you are running Windows 2000 but do not see this tab, be sure you install Service Pack 1 and 2.
Under compatibility mode, select 'Run this program in compatibility mode for:' and pull down the menu to select 'Windows NT 4.0 (SP5)'. Hit okay, and the next time you launch the game with this shortcut, compatibility mode is enabled.
This has been known to enable things such as OpenGL in XP for HW/HWC, however note that on theory it should work in Windows 2000, but at this time no one has had any luck.

AstroMat1 discovered this and I have tried it myself and it does work with W2K.

Done, and done. I'm running Windows 2000, and I have OpenGL extensions working fine with Homeworld.
Know how? I bet you don't! Go here to find out how (you need Service Pack 2 for Windows 2000 if you want this to work)
Am I your hero yet?
EDIT: Sorry, forgot to post this. That just shows you how to enable the Compatability mode. After that, just create a shortcut to Homeworld, right-click on the shortcut, select the COMPATABILITY tab, and click on WINDOWS NT4 SP5 COMPATABILITY LAYER. Be sure to check the RUN IN COMPATABILITY MODE box as well. There, you're done. A bit complicated I guess, but it works like a dream.
Kudos to AstroMat1 for finding this.

Allright I found it:
In the Microsoft Knowledge Base (http://support.microsoft.com/) type Q279792 in the search box in the upper left corner. This should bring you to the correct article.

Does this work with win2k SP3? I know there was a tab before, but it seems to be gone now

In Windows XP an alternate method I like to use is the compatibility wizard under "accessories" on the start menu. It does the same thing as when you go through the shortcut icon's "properties" but it makes it easy to test each choice to see if it works. It allows you to bring up the game within the wizard which saves time and effort.

Im playing cata through windows XP prof with sp2 and I dont need to check any compatibilty screens. Only thing you have to do is make your firewall allow the game or turn it off.
Works like a charm and desktops less too.

All I get is a window with "No disk inserted" and I have tried all settings as outlined in
the above notes. Any ideas?

Could that be a reason why it keeps crashing randomly to my desktop, as in it goes black and then it appears at my desktop.

Ripster40, this isn't really the appropriate forum for this question but if you are talking about Homeworld and Windows XP, then the answer is yes, probably. As it is an older game you should make sure you install the 1.05 patch and run the game under Windows NT compatibility mode. Click here (http://www.vugames.com/file_list.do?gamePlatformId=110) if you need to download the patch.
