This applies to:

- Homeworld
- Homeworld Cataclysm
- All OSes

SYMPTOM:

1. When launching game, hour glass appears but nothing happens after.

2. When launching game, 2 intro movie displays but then blank screen with music / game quits to desktop.

3. no CD in drive message

4. it just won't run okay?!

CAUSE and SOLUTION/WORKAROUND:

1. For hour glass problem, it appears to be a conflict between the copy protection scheme used on HW/HWC cd and your particular CD/DVD drive. If this is indeed the case, there is no apparent effective fixes excepts for using a different drive or to apply a game fix (which technically is violating the EULA). Contact moderator or Sierra tech support.

2. Enable commandline /disableAVI, see the HW/HWC commandline FAQ. (http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4731)

3. Try commandline /CDpath = x or Compatibility Mode (http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3009) if you are in NT.

4. Of course always patch your copy of the game to the latest versions. Then if compatibility mode and /disableavi does not work for example, in the infinite wisdom of Shin, disable your soundcard and try it again. Any more complicated than that, right now I recommend you contact tech support or post a message on the forums.

I *might* have a fix for #1:

What about making an ISO of the game CD on your hard drive, then getting a prog called DAEMON Tools (http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/portal/portal.php I think). DAEMON Tools creates 4 "phantom" DVD-ROM drives on your system, that can each run an ISO CD image as an actual CD.

DTools has options that remove copy protection from ISOs it is running. Mebbe that will help struggling gamers.

[NOTE: I am not promoting piracy, illegal CD copying, etc. I am simply offering what may be a solution to a problem.]

I've been looking for a DoW ISO or other cd image to use in Daemon Tools, but cannot find one, or the software to make one. Anyone know of any decent freeware/shareware trials that will allow me to make one, or any site where I can download one? If you know of a shareware trial, please be sure it has no limit or a limit above 700MB on CD size (I found one called MagicISO with a 300MB limit on the trial version; far smaller than the 700MB required for the CD).

Thanks

Just download the trial version of Alcohol 120% and make an image with the SecuROM setting (I think). It worked for me.
