...well, we will be dead anyway, execpt for Uber whose been around since the 18th century :D

Click Here (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2002/04/0403_020404_asteroid.html) for the info. Better prep that XR-71...

known about it for a few weeks now :p

1/300 chance of hitting, not all that high... and it would appear we've got plenty of time to plan for it

what concerns me more are ones like the one about a month ago that we detected 4 days after it passed within 200,000 miles (closer than the moon).

p.s...

Odds of one in 300 may seem almost insignificant, but it is the highest Earth-impact potential ever assigned by scientists to an object in space, according to Giorgini. I'd say Mir's potential was higher ;)

Hell I remember one in 1998 (I think) that was a couple kilometers and passed with some 10,000 miles or so. Saw the tape on Discovery; it was a fast white streak in the sky.

Plus I think he was talking about natural objects

Your right, we are all going to die. Because no one lives forever!:D (except Silver Quasar He has found a way to travel thraough dimensions,or somtin, way to many theories for one person, as he says, ":dunce: he's psyco:dunce:" ) (to much in the parenthisis, huh, oh well) That is actually kinda cool, except not....I belive that we (as in terrestrials) we will most likely find some way avoiding from getting hit, unless some dramatic earthwide revolution happens.....

Let's strap a rocket on the thing and pull it into Earth orbit! It would be cool to have another moon. :)

by the 29th century, they'd probably have a SIEGE CANNON
to take down that asteroid... Or some kind of photon torpedo or something...

"hey, an asteroid is aboout to hit earth..."
"Again? oh for the love of... okay, fire the main gun"
"done, sir."
"Okay, now that that's out of the way, how about lunch?"

If we were gonna get squished like flies by one of those muthas, would you want to know, and how soon? Guys?

I've always said I don't mind dying as long as I see it coming.
I'd rather my last thought not be something like "jeez, I need a crap..." Boom.

Ono! what about the giant rock 2002 CUL8R (http://www.satirewire.com/news/jan02/asteroid.shtml)??

Sure the blast wont change our oribt. hehe
My guesss is that we will use our bioenginnered beast of burden that live in space and let them wat the rocks.

Jeez eiden. Until I noticed it was on SatireWire, I thought that was real!
I'm now officially a complete bonehead...

"cannot find server"

Satirewire, huh.

But I did see on TV (so it must be true, the Discovery Channel even) a few nights ago that there was an asteroid the size of manhattan that will come extremely close to earth in 2004. Called Dutattus or something like that. I'm skerd, what if it's like that comet in Armageddon and its gravity is dragging little Volkswagen sized asteroids behind it to f*ck us up city by city.

You have NO IDEA what it's like to expect your own death. It must be excrutiating to watch the days go by, closer and closer to your end.

In the extremely unlikely event that I happen to find the money and the means to make a short film (well, maybe not so short) then I'd like to film a pseudo-documentary about the earth in maybe ten years time, where a giant (maybe 1500m) asteroid is about to impact the earth.

It was spotted too late, was travelling too fast for anyone to do anything about it, and will impact the earth in a week.

The 'documentary' will focus on about 5 people from all different walks of life and different countries who don't know each other, and will follow their personal stories in the last week of mankind. One will be a 10 year old boy, another a 50 year old executive with wife and family, a street beggar, a far-eastern priest and a government defense official.

It'll show how each of these people all have one thing in common, and despite their huge life-differences, with the end of civilization imminent, they're all bound by being humans.

I want to convey how their emotions run more intense as the days count down. Some will be accepting, some will be at nervous breakdown. We'll see who these people call, who they spend their time with on the last day, where they choose to be, watching their last sunrise.... attaching significance to each and every single thing they do.

It would be interesting to explore how everything fundemental to society breaks down into nothingness on the final day. Money, status, power, race, religion.... all meaningless save for being human.

Catastrophic as such an event is, deep down I think I have a macabre wish to see it happen. It fascinates me to know what the last day would be like for everyone....

It won't be pretty like all that...probably the whole planet would turn into a huge lawless mosh pit. You know this society would collapse into a gelatinous mush that would make amoebae sick the minute that was reported on CNN.

Personally, I'd find out exactly where the thing is going to hit and go there. I'd rather be incinerated than starve or be robbed in the dark dusty winter years afterwards. Being blown up is the best way to die.

If that were right now, list of things to do before going to epicenter:

One word: Get laid.
Eat wasabi.
Hit someone with a rubber chicken.

All the downtime between those would probably be filled with hentai and raves.

pre-death rubber chickens, sex and raves?

I like your style!

:-O

GWAH? bugger.

I must take a trip to the library tomorrow and rent this video, in that case. Of course, it will no doubt be rubbish in comparison to my potential directorial greatness!

will report back.

Are we dead yet?? :dunce:

YOU GO BOOM!!
13th Apr 02, 6:10 PM
to get rid of that asteroid we would have to dicinagrate it or move it out of the way.

If we tried to nuke it or something would be stupid, because all the little chunks that are left will all hit the Earth and other neighboring planets, so we will be killed anyway. so our best option would to move it.

thanks for your most scientific professional opionion, there.
...because of course we didn't already know that.

We should probably try to put it into orbit so we can harvest it and get rich at the same time. :)

YOU GO BOOM!!
13th Apr 02, 11:53 PM
well excuse me, Panther, for trying to express my opinion on the matter just like you and everyone else. :dunce: :flame:

Tygre

You're excused.

I say we should break off a few chunks JUST the right size and crash them into the annoying places, like Canada, the Middle East, and Georgia. If we control NEA's, we control the WORLD!!!

Which Georgia? The United State or the Former Soviet Republic?

Tygre

The State of Georgia.

Former Soviet Republic Small Barely Noticeable Eastern Europe Country Georgia does not annoy me.
