.........I loved Generals when it first came out...... but when the bugs and those immature n00bs showed up man did that make life living hell. The worst part was EA did jack about the balance issues which screwed the game. KRs owned everything that was not gatgun or quad cannon, once super general got Alpha Auroras your dead, no need for Vanilla China when you have Nuke General etc etc..... This game even at beta stage was leaps and bounds over generals...... I hope they come out with sects for every race (Khrone Berserkers, Tzenntch sorcerors, Slannesh Noise Marines etc etc.) though that was a great idea from generals which can be incorparated into the expansion of DoW.

Was a genearls player but zero hour ruined it for me. The battles were more sieges until you ran out of resources building more and more super weapons

I was a very good ZH player in my time. My China nuke tank rush never failed. Except against those pesky Infantry generals. Grr...

played generals a lot, never bothered with ZH really.
i pefere dow anyway as yes mass tank battles might be fun to watch but i think the men were done pretty crap graphics wise & also played a too small part.....i mean in what realistic battle would you have 50+ tanks with not a single man?
completed the game, played a few lan games then given up on it (well ok i did snap my CD in half which is why i never played it online much)

Yeah, I agree with the above statements. I had the original and ZH ...
It began as a loathing of Gamespy but with multiplayer issues, balancing issues unresolved and exacerbated by releasing an expansion with 12 factions(!) I began to regret my time/cost investment.
(prays DoW meets a far better fate)
I hope EA flops with BFME and probably will
Hope on, with EA, thats near impossible. Hell, they are the ones holding the cards for one of the highest selling game series: The Sims.
BFME will certainly not flop. Generals didn't; The Sims didn't; Battlefield 1942 & Vietnam didn't.... you do the math. Hate EA as much as you like, they're one of the biggest publishing giants in the gaming industry.

I'm a C&C freak, i have every single C&C computer game there is, but i found C&C generals:Zero Hour not to fun to play online. Personaly I love to pwn some fools with the low graphic horror of C&C the original!

ROFL EA did that for a reason.... Immagine DoW with 8000 Infantry in one area... the lag generated would be so immense people with t3 would feel it. The reason why its stick people is to reduce the number of things your video card has to draw on your computer screen. In general, both games are fantastic. Generals wasent lookin good with the stick people of death, but it was something i'd take over taking an hour to move a single unit one inch :P
I have high expectations for DoW when it comes out, and with the mod base of Generals the games will be competing at the same level for a very long time in my books.

It will flop game wise not by how much that will be sold. Its not very hard to see the game is going to be lame because EA is easily showing that they are only trying to attract casual gamers. For example you will not be able to build buildings where ever you want, you can only build on pre set locations. Also it has crappy mutiplayer modes and with EA not really doing much work for mutiplayer I expect the sides to be unbalanced(there not going to have a beta or demo which is also a sign that the game is going to be rushed) and support will be non existance. The single players missions are going to be bland because they all are about attacking some location like isengard or helms deep. Of course it will sell alot because they casual gamers will be wowed by graphics like every other EA game. Damn EA sports and the SIMs.
BTW EA will not be doing as well because they have lost many (the more hardcore)fans with poor support and balance from zero hour and battlefield vietnam. Someday I wish EA becomes a monopoly and than have to sell the westwood team back.

I can't believe you are comparing CC:Generals with DoW. Although DoW is still in the beta stage, it is already FAR, FAR better than CC ever was. I, especially found it stupid that a tank was basically ineffective against infantry unless you had gatling turrets. Although CC has been out a while it is still hugely unbalanced while DoW is almost perfect...
Heh, yeah, i hope the Westwood team gets free too, but didn't they fragment after the buy out?
Anyway, the balance in vanilla Generals was near perfect. They didn't bother refining the balance in ZH, while it is a nice game, was skewed balance-wise, since the normal generals didn't stand a chance against the specialized generals.
As for BFME being a flop, i highly doubt that will happen, as the LoTR fanbase is just huge. Add to that a large community of Generals modders.... Buildings can only be built in pre-set places? no problem! Mod it out! :D Anyway, the whole focus of that game is its "epic" battles, more emphasis on strategy & tactics on the battlefield and less on base management. Least thats the way i see it.

vanilla generals was pretty good with balance and almost perfect. However it did have a beta and 7 patches while BFME will not and im assuming that you know about the CNC 3 pic? Once EA finishes BFME I bet they will start right away with CNC 3 because what can add to BFME with an expansion. Than expect the same thing with BFME that happened with zero hour, no support.
On the mod issue, sure you can remove the pre set plots but only the hardcore will try them and lets face it that most of the BFME community will be casual gamers. The hardcore(including the modders) have been drawn away by EAs support and lack of balancing and many of the hardcore are looking at rome:total war now. The only thing that really decreases micro and is beneficial to not hurting strategy is the preset formations but as of now thats the only thing. Strategy no one can really comment because the game isnt out yet. If you are looking for strategy theres no doubt that rome:total war will be better in this area. Although BFME maybe more fun, I would suggest that reading the reviews and even more importantly read comments on the message boards before buying BFME.
Oh and yes westwood did fragment but some of the talent is still at EA. Maybe EA could sell the remaining WW team to petroglyph, petroglyph is where most the other WW members went to including frank klepacki(he made all the classic CNC music from the first CNC to renegade). I expect there secret game which is probably an RTS to be something similar to CNC and hope it will great. They will annouce it at the end of this year. Feel free to take a look at there website

Anyway, the balance in vanilla Generals was near perfect.
OK, I concede in the first half (early to mid) it was great. :fencing: But by the end the general powers were a bit off (WMD-wise). Also, certain things like MiG spamming were a problem (end game wise) till the last patch. I played quite a bit online and I found that the only way for the GLA to win was to make sure that his opponents never teched up all the way. In a team game this was nigh on impossible.
But yeah RTS games demand support usually. We would probably be better off if EA stuck to sports games as there marketing budget shrouds out many quality RTS titles. :notadd:

But isn't Dice making that, not EA? I see EA getting all the credit for BF1942 and BF:V but it was Dice witch made the game, NOT EA.

I'm a big Generals player too... I'm da_buddha who ran the $3000 prize value tournament recently for ZH... On cncreplays too...
And now I love this game even more... Glad to see all of the other fellow CCG people coming here.... and that's why I'm looking at turning the ZH tourney into a DoW tourney ;)

Which is probably owned by EA, as they seem to own half the gaming companies out there. Though they only get 10% revenue from their PC games apparantly which I was quite shocked about. They make a crap load of money from their console games.
Anyway when you buy an EA game with online play expect crap support for a short amount of time, then no support. Usually release a couple of patches then don't bother any more as they are no longer making any money out of it.
They have bought out SO many companies over the years, it's a crying shame. Anyway, the fact that they have been losing money on their attempts at MMORPG's cheers me up, they don't have a clue what to do with MMORPG's as they don't seem to realise you actually have to constantly support them to see them grow.
Im still bitter about them buying out Kesmai some years back. Kesmai was a game company that developed many online games and leased them out to other services like AOL and Gamestorm. They were one of the gaming pioneers and released one of the first MUD's, which eventually evolved into the MUD Islands of Kesmai. That then evolved into Legends of Kesmai which was a graphical MUD and the best online game and community I have ever come across to date.
They bought them out and shut down all games hosted by them and gamestorm in an attempt to get their customers to come to Ultima Online and their other online gaming centre that flopped, many people were extremely angry about this.
Anyway, myself and many others don't buy EA games at all now *EA is shutting down a MMORPG they run called Earth and Beyond because they don't feel they are making enough money to warrant running it anymore. All the subscribers are understandably extremely pissed off and many have sworn off EA games for good* hopefully they will take notice and start to support their online games better.

I'm pretty sure Dice is not owned by EA, glad to, cause I'm angry at them shutting down Westwood Studios. EA only publishes the BF series.

Yes but they are in charge in when a game is going to be released or not. BFV and zero hour would have been great but EA decided that they should rush it out so they can work on projects that EA thinks that will get more money. Im sure that the developing team does want to make polished and complete games but EA forces them to rush the games out. Think of EA as a oppressive leader
Bah,that's the case with a lot of publishers. That's what VUG did to GCII and HW2,and I will never forgive them for that.

That made me very mad. I own and like HW2 very much, and there were things that easily could have been done from a few more patches that would have helped that game so much, but nothing could be done, because the publisher didn't feel like spending more money letting the devs make some NEEDED patches :-(
Same goes for ZH. More could have been done, but EA jsut decided to blow it off, and work on something else.
