View Full Version : Looking for a new game to play

I'm looking for a new game to play and I have no idea what's out there. I currently own only 3 games, HW, HW:C, and Tribes2. Now, I play T2 alot, I really like the teamplay in that game. The last time I played HW was about 6-7 months ago. Cataclysm, even longer.

I really like FPS like T2, and RTS like HW is ok. What I'm really looking for is more/different games (not racing or sports). I don't really like Flight Sims either so no "OMG GET IL2!!!!!!1111one".

So if you want to help me out, list some games that you like, and links to the game site/demo and I'll check 'em out.

kthx   :yippee:

Been playing C&C renegade multi demo here at school. Nice game.

I'm probably going to buy the full version and get Dungeon Siege and Jedi Knight 2 as well. I'll tellya what I think once I play em.

MoH:AA and RtCW are pretty good, if multiplayer is what you prefer, I'd go with Wolf, lots of teamplay is needed if your up agianst a good team.

Wolf Demo (http://gamespot.com/gamespot/filters/products/downloads/0,11095,913853,00.html)

MoH:AA Demo (http://gamespot.com/gamespot/filters/products/downloads/0,11095,457649,00.html)

You could also get Fallout Tactics (http://gamespot.com/gamespot/filters/products/downloads/0,11095,370849,00.html) for a real cheap price, it has a pretty good teambased single player mode, multiplay isn't very good though.

If you're into different genres as you say you are, I wouldn't go for wolf, moh or renegade since you won't see anything you haven't in T2 already, except not as good as T2.

So, you could try something along the lines of Dungeon Siege, an RPG that's just come out... or... er, not much else. There's a real dearth of games at the moment - apart from a few RPG releases, nothing exciting is happening.

If you waited a couple of months, there's some decent stuff for release - GTA3, which I'd heartily recommend, and IC, which you know about, and I think even Halo, or have they changed their mind about a PC version again?

If you can't wait and you do intend to get another generic FPS, then I'd take Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast over the others, because 1, it's new, so you won't be entirely outclassed in skill yet, and 2, it's already proved very popular in the online stats. And that's even if you DON'T like Star Wars. If you do, consider... dedicated lightsabre duels, dark and lightsided multiplayer, and force powers... force jump + force pull = force catapult, hehe.

What!! NO HALF-LIFE!! :argh:

IMO Half-life is one of the two greatest games ever made (The other being Homeworld)
You have to play Half-Life, you haven’t lived life until you’ve have.

Jedi Knight 2 is an incredible game... lightsaber combat looks like it's right out of the movies :argh:

Worked fine on my computer, bought the game after playing that demo 'cause I liked it so much. Sounds like a problem with your comp...

Well, if you can wait until summer. Get Impossible Creatures. If not, you can try Pharaoh, it's been out for awhile and it's just classic. Awesome game, if you get that I suggest you get the Cleopatra expansion pack as well.

I was amused with Beyond Atlantis for awhile, I hear they have a follow up to that out. Pretty cool game if you enjoy RPGs and puzzles.

There is a single and multiplayer demo for MoH:AA. I should have also pointed out that while the singer player game (which only has six missions) is quite fun, multiplayer, well...... sucks. AS Walker said, if you want a change in genres, then don't go with Wolf, it's pretty much the same, except it's not as team orentied and the actions is at a much faster pace (partly because some of the damn levels are so cramped).

i know that wolfenstein kicks ass in mplayer, and it involves aliens so its basically another half life rip off in a way
although i am a major ww2 fan, MOHAA is supposed to have kick ass single player, but sh1tty ass mplayer.

decisions, decisions. all when im about to buy a new ford ranger and new pc parts while only getting $8.25 at target

wolf doesnt have aliens =/

Get Jedi Knight 2. Its basically a FPS with lightsaber combat in 3rd person. Sweet game. Lots of puzzles, lots of combat, decent story.

Any game that lets you grab an imperial officer's throat and, drag him over a ledge to drop him is tops in my book :D

Jedi Knight II Sucked... until you get the lightsaber... then it was one of the best games in recent memory... in spite of the stupid jumping puzzles and the extraordinarily stupid stormtroopers.

At least they explain why the stormtroopers are such bad fing shots.

You must get half-life, its still the benchmark fps in terms of its sp + mp package/longevity.

Then get Freespace2, its nothing like a flight sim, and its hella cool

Oh and both those games are, like, cheap now :)

if you also like SP fps, get deus ex and system shock 2

both golden oldies :bigthumb:

I agree with Uber. JK2 sucks until you get the Force and your Lightsaber. Then it is like watching a movie. Seeing your character deflect fire from 4 heavy repeaters is very satisfying.

Plus, in multiplayer you can throw pike off of buildings, which is also quite fun.

Jedi Knight 2 is great once you get the light sabre. Before that its just your typical fps: shoot, run, shoot, pull lever, shoot.

Dungeon Siege is another i would recommend. The sp is adequate, but the action, graphics, and sound are amazing. In addition several people who log onto irc.guidestone.com have the game... so ip mp games are not a problem.

I would also reccomend JKII

Good MP, and very good SP once you get the sabre and start fighting some Jedi,

Other than that, if it's out soon, Grand Theft Auto III completely blew me away when I tried it on a friends PS2, that game almost persuaded me to buy an entire console just to play it.

Murph
12th Apr 02, 8:57 PM
yes, jedi knight rulez once you get the lightsaber. You only have to suffer through 5 or so missions w/o the saber.

wtf avp2 si win

actually I have the demos and it is really fun.......but it seems like it might get old rather fast.
I want JKII.

soul Reaver 2 is a pretty good game. Great story, and the facial animations are just so amazing.

Tachyon is also a good game, albeit old.

Freedom force may or may not please you, so play it at your own risk.

You might try signing up for the O.R.B. beta which looks very Homeworldesque. It should be starting soon. I just got my acceptance and NDA the other day.

and several more without the force powers are their fullest. Thank god for cheats.

And there's nothing more satisfying than throwing your saber at an enemy while you have him in your force grip.

Emperor Battle for dune is a fun game Tachyon the fringe = good game...... if you havent played Starcraft i recomend it is quite a classic and ruled for its time. those are the games that I play often but T2 is the one im playing right now untill I get the link to DL the O-R-B beta......

i did cheat, but never at the lightsaber duels between Kyle and Tavion, and in the final confrontation with Desann. You have NO IDEA how difficult those two are.

what about a good old turn based game?

Homm4 just hit the shelves and its a great game.
while turn based games are slower than their RTS counterparts they are by no means less exciting.

I am currently enjoying Dungeon Siege SP.
Havent really tried MP yet because its not fully tuned yet says Microsoft.

But, i am really looking forward to Neverwinter Nights!!!!
That one will rock my world the comming months/years i hope :D

And still playing MW4 BK from time to time...

Neverwinter Nights looks like it's going to be fun, 'course it has to come out first :(

For turn based, Civ III's always an option, and you can't beat Alpha Centauri. Freedom Force is a blast, I think, and the mods that thing's going to spawn are going to be very cool.

As far as FPS's, I just tried Ghost Recon myself yesterday, and lemmie tell ya, that game is fun as hell!

Try Sea Dogs, even if it is a little loose and shaky. Civ III - very very fun. AC - get it, and the expansion. oh yeah - Red Faction is very fun too.

You want to play a game other than Tribes 2 and HW? Heretic! ;)

15th Apr 02, 4:09 PM
jUst a suggestion: try earth2150 (rts), the moon project (sequel) or Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds (rts).

E2150 and TMP are 3d GROUND rts games...theyre not bad and worth a try.

SWGB is an rts based on star wars....graphics are kinda dull compared to hw, but the game isnt so bad.

Mazar_Paktu
15th Apr 02, 6:09 PM
I didnt like SWGB, I thought it played exactly the same as AoE2 - it was fun, but it wasn't really worth the $$ again...

But yes, Earth 2150 is VERY fun... even though the sides arent quite balanced properly, which is addressed in The Moon Project.

Did anyone mention counter strike? I saw half-life. You and get halflife for cheap then download the counter strike mod for some serious team fun. Though the team play is less team play than DM then tribes is. Too many people try to play for kills and not objective completion.

Still it's a good game to play.

Noname_MiB
17th Apr 02, 5:35 PM
i personally dont like CS. Theres only one objective in it, whoring the AWP.

I love DoD thou (1.3b was better then 2.0 thou :err:, but it still owns all :D )

Try:

Mechwarrior 4 Black Knight
Mechcommander 2

For flight sims, I especially recommend IL2 Sturmovik. This game is truly a masterpiece of execution and detail, with very good support, patches, highly communicative company, and not the least truly jaw dropping graphics.

Up & coming titles that I'm currently watching for:

Neocron: an interesting-looking MMPORG that reminds me almost of Deus Ex and Bladerunner. http://www.neocron.com

eVe: again, an MMPORG, although more like HW. http://www.eve-online.com

Both of these, are, I think, in public beta stage, although I have yet to get into either.

Old favorites:

Deus Ex: definately one of the better games ever made, with astouding replay value and a pretty sweet plot with lots of freedom.

Ground Control: a very interesting RTS-type game (I'm told it's actually a "tactical strategy") with nice gfx and great gameplay.

FreeSpace 2: very cool game, probably the best spaceflight sim I've ever played, with interesting plot and yummy, yummy graphics.

Battlezone II: very unusual and very interesting, somewhat like a cross between a FPS and a RTS - you command your units while also piloting around a tank.

Most of these are pretty cheap now (I got Ground Control for $10usd, and I saw Deus Ex for $20 not too long ago), but still excellent games IMO.

Best of luck to you in finding some games, xyph.

Get Freespace 2. It may be old, but it is the greatest game EVAR!!! (Except for Homeworld :D)

Nesher
18th Apr 02, 12:47 AM
I was wondering as I wuz reading if anybody would mention Freespace...I'm actually working on the second part of Freespace 1 (Silent Threat) and I actually found a copy of FS2 on eBay and should be getting it any day!!!

If you like puzzle/adventure games...an oldie BUT AWESOME goodie is Grim Fandango...I laughed, I cried, (sniff)...you get the point.

Star Trek Bridge Commander was fairly decent, good MP but the SP wasn't long enough.

I agree about SWGB..not really worth the $$$ unless you are a diehard fan.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein=AWESOME

Two kinds of people play CS now: cheaters, and those who accuse people of cheating. I was bored with getting accused of cheating almost every server I went on, which is why I quit. Has the situation improved at all recently?

ps xyph buy JK2, it owns...

"This is the game you're looking for..."

- ion -

Alpha_1
18th Apr 02, 6:39 AM
Well I use Cheating Death and stick to only servers with anticheat mods running. They may not catch every cheater but they get the majority and that is fine with me. I generally do not get accused of cheating (I'm not that good at 1:1) but if the server admins are idiots anyone who is good can get kicked.

Still it is fun.

By the way you could also try the Strategy First title Disciples Dark Prophecy. It is along the lines of HOMM4 but from what everyone on the DDP boards are saying it is better than HOMM4. I can't judge it as I only play DDP. There are 2 demos of DDP on the strategy first web site, check them out to see what you think.

Unreal Tournament :) It may be 2 years old but the game still a blast and has the best graphics out there. Plus countless 100's of maps, mods, total conversions, etc, etc.
Oh and btw UT2 is scheduled for release this next month.

MOHAA is a great game ESPECIALLY in MP. The Omaha beach level when you play with lots of ppl is straight out of Saving Private Ryan (which isn't a bad thing, its a good thing). I love that GAME! Sniping is awesome and ffa in the forest is INSANE! Get MOHAA! and get Jedi Knight Two! There is a cheat for better cutting off of body parts which i posted in the JK2 review discussion. Also get IL2! :anime: it actually is a great game amazing graphics. And MP is major fun. I always blow off their elevator and rudder and let them bbuuuurrrrnnnn.
