how much money would i be looking at sinking into this game to get started, just enough to field a team to play with.
also are orks going to be more money to play with becouse they take more units to "zerg" the enemy. or do they not zerg at all in thew table top.
what age group of people would i probly meet if i show up to a shop durring a meeting of war hammer 40k.
thanks for your time :)

Well for a army big enough to bother playing you'll need to fork out at least £100-150.
Orks can 'zerg' with an army but there are other options open to you. Most notably a 'hard ork' approach with heavily armoured orks, tooled up Nobsand warboss with a few orky dreadnoughts and killa kans (note: the killa kan in DOW is actually a dreadnought killa kans ar smaller and you can take them in squads of 1-3) or speed freaks with a transport based army where you'll have fewer boyz but they can move quick in trukkz and pile in faster.
The age of people can vary wildly however if you go in the evening then usually people playing will be would be 20+ however earlier in the day you can expect people younger.
On another note a new edition of the 40k rules is coming in less than a month (23 or so days I heard...) so you should buy the ork codex for the ork specific rules, but wait until the new rulebook is out before you buy it. And it would be a good idea to post a rough army list on the strategy forums here or perhaps on the forums at www.portent.net so people can help with the list. For help most average games will be between 1000-2000 pts which may help you later.

Well I was usin pounds not euros so that would be something like 180-275 dollars.
You can save LOTS of money if buy online (ie Ebay) you can find already painted armies of whatever you like (orks for instance) and depending on the item they sometimes will be painted already and you can play with them. Or if you want to add our own personal touch just buy unpainted ones. pretty big armies (like 2000-3000 points) prolly go for about 200ish american.

as to your question wether orks "zerg" their enemys:
firstly, i'm amazed some guy didn't show up and said something like: OMG SC IS A 40K RIPOFF, SC SUCKS !!!!!1111111111(well, all the better i assume, we don't want to start another of those hideous thread wherein everyone repeats how they hate fanboys while they are acting like them themselves)
well, back on track. I guess it depends on how you play it. Some people play army's that only feature (or are heavily focus on at least) fast attack like white scars space marines and saim-hann eldar. Some tau players tend to take large numbers of basic troops while others tend to take more battlesuits and specialized units and so on. You could play a army centered on very tough orks with relatively few numbers compared to standard ork armys but whom can be twice as deadly if played right. Still, i advice to start you use the normal ork army list.
as for cost: the GW-hobby can be quite expensive. if you don't use use E-bay, i recommend to do some research about prices. generally here the stuff is alot cheaper in a games workshop hobbystore, but we only have one in our capital and most of the codexes are in french for some odd reason, even tough our country should be bilingual(but then again, almost our entire capital seems to be unaware that we also speak Dutch in our country and i wouldn't be amazed if GW like most companys skipped over dutch translations, like the rest of the world does)

Easyest way to not spend an inexplicable amount of money(go in for the guards codex, come out with 5 necromunda gangs and half a lizardman army) is make friens with someone who works there and get that sweet, sweet tasty staff discount.

Gw staffers are NOT allowed to use their discount for any but themselves - I know, I was one.
I would strongly advise your pal to cease and desist from doing this as he WILL get sacked if he gets caught. unless he works in the morally decrepit southern cells (no offence to southerners, like my wife, there) where, so im told, anything goes...
I worked in Metro (thats the UK) by the way, hello to anyone who goes there went there - Hams got your back.

Im in the midlands so not exactly south i would say where but the GW inquisitors would hunt me down like a person who posts stuf about squats. And you were staff as in you got sacked for said discount scam?

No, thankfully,I actually managed to leave with good grace. I was considering doing squad leader but unfortunatley money became to much of an issue - shame really.
I know of other individuals who have suffered the consequences however. hardly wrth it really. I pay full price now, and, yeah, it stings but I'm a big boy - I can take it.
