I've thrown together a list of Chapters I'll be making badges for. I'm willing to accept any requests as well, for any race. All I need is a link to the image, so I can cut and paste with ruthless efficiency.

Some of the chapter graphics look really sweet. I kinda wish you could make a more custom color scheme in this game, like having specific shoulder graphics for different teams ( im sure sooner or later new skins from people or teams will have them out ). Looking at some of the models on games workshop gave me alot of cool ideas. anyone have gallerys of some private WH40k armys?

I can do banners too. I've got a few Dark Angels ones done already, and I'd be happy to do more if you can post links to the ones you want.

Be warned though, most of the banner images out there aren't squared and look squished when you go to 64x64, which isn't supposed to be the way they'll be retail.

My mine reason for asking for links, was if someone requested a badge, I'm not talented enough to actually create the whole image. I need something I can copy and paste fairly easily.

Just a little hint for anyone making badges; use the crystalize effect in photoshop on its lowest setting to get the rough edges so you know its seen a battle or two :) it looks sweet.

Well here is two i made which are in use currently on my own team =D

Remeber, right click, save as...

boltbadge (http://www.warpedproject.com/users/sharpe/boltbadge.tga) - The Armbadge, with a beveled effect to make it look like a raised panel on the units shoulder.

BoltBanner (http://www.warpedproject.com/users/sharpe/boltbanner.tga) - The Banner, flat panel filter.

These are my first attempts, as i only got the game tonight, and im kinda handy with PS, so maybe look out for some more soon :)

Gunny, you place them in two folders named badges and banners, in your Dawn of War Installation Directory.

I.E: C:\Program Files\THQ\Dawn of War Beta

P.S: Try using the Fresco Filter in PS, it looks alittle sweeter than the crystalize filter for battle damage =)

Well, you just make a tga exactly the same as with a badge, but save it in the banners directory.

Dimensions are alittle fiddly, so far i think they have to be set somewhere between 64 and 82px, but not exactly sure yet....

Not 100% sure what the heck to do, even though I found a pretty good picture I was hoping to use as a Blood Angels banner...but It wont work =\

Also, the Red Wolves and Marines Malevolent badges I uploaded were older files and look like crap in game, I've got some new ones, but my FTP server is flaking out. Once it's back up I'll update them.

Sigs are fine, but Screenshots are still against NDA, and cannot be hosted.

You get 50mg of webspace, no ads, FTP acces, mysql and php4u support, as well as front page extension support. Obviously, hotlinking images is also allowed.

It should work fine, i think the thing you were doing wrong was trying to save the tga in indexed color mode, instead of RGB. To change your color mode, click on image, then mode, in PS.

oh is it a bug, but some of my chapters in army painter are getting mysteriously deleted when I make a new army, I got like 12 now, is this a known bug (which Im sure it is) and is there a work around. Or just a max # of total armies per race?

Well, IE cannot read .tga files, so unless you have an image editor or previewer, there really isn't much of a way to view them.

The files need to be right clicked, choose Save As, and then save it to your C:\Program Files\THQ\Dawn of War\Badges directory, and they'll show up in your Army Painter.

Yeah, that'll be fairly easy to do. Once I get home from work I'm going to move all these images back to my private hosting, and I'll throw out some banners.

Plus, I know the Dark Angel ones are extremely low quality. I made them a few weeks ago, just to test them out. Plus, in the conversion to 64x64 they get pretty squished.

Well, i had another stab at it just for kicks. It aint as good as the one i did b4, but maybe its more what you are looking for.

My advice to you would be, give it a go yourself, it isnt hard, if you dont have photoshop, download one of the free editors like "the gimp" etc :bandit:

Also, as for editors old free ones can work just as well as the new versions and they don't seem to have as many errors or problems with it being a trial.

Well, me and my friend have been trying to make a unit badge for what will hopefully become our own chapter, we're just having trouble putting it together.

The basic idea is a sword with a dna strand wraped around the blade, but it seems like it's too complex to pull off without it looking too stylish or just plain goofy.

Any hints, suggestions, or even submission would be most appreciated.

Hrmmm, Ive got PS 7 and am following the instructions on the sticky exactly, but the badges/banners are coming out blank in the Unit Painter in game. Not quite sure what I'm doing incorrectly.

Also ensure that your image is saved in RGB colour mode.

man, if cypher is the emperor, he's a weakling, all I was going to say is that Cypher was the second in command under Luther (the traitor of the Dark Angels) and was the one who took charge and made sure all the Dark Angels could escape. :)

The Emperor is on that throne and is holding back Chaos with his incredible mind powers AND he provides the Astronomicans Beacon so that Navigator's may traverse the warp safely. :D

There are some theories that Cypher is supposedly the Star Child, but he's not the Emperor. It's impossible (relatively speaking). "Cloning" as we think of it does not exist in WH40k.

This paragraph is 40k canon:
The Star Child is, for those of you unread in 40k Mythos, supposedly the consciousness of the Emperor that was set adrift in the Warp when he died, waiting to be reincarnated. Some small fraction remains in his corpse, but the majority of it drifts through the warp "as a child in a basket, floating along the river". The (heretical) Cult of the Illuminated worships the Star Child and endeavors to bring him back. (You can find a number of accounts of Space Marines being ordered to hunt down and slay the Cult of the Illuminated.)

This paragraph is complete and total hogwash I made up -- but it sounds good:
My best theory is that Lion el'Jonson (I always forget how that's spelled) is the Star Child, waiting to be reawakened. His chamber can only be unlocked by the Lion Sword, and the Star Child can only return when the Emperor has died. Cypher is taking the Lion Sword to Terra to slay the Emperor, and by reawakening his spirit in Lion el'Jonson, he will have bought redemption for the Unforgiven.

i'll give some examples.

The rumor was that, after the battle with Horus he was mortally wounded, but instead of getting himself locked up on a throne, he went into the warp. knowing that time moves diffrently, and he could heal there.
He put a clone of himself on the throne to act as him. That guy has been set to the golden throne.
Some Primarches (Leman Russ for one... not sure on the other ones tho) Felt that their place was no longer that of amongst men, and decided to follow The Emperor in to the Warp to find him.

Noticed how he works for all sides, Chaos, Eldar, Imperial Guard (even tau if i'm not mistaken) he tries to get himself back on the throne. Since no living Imperial will ever believe him. If he tells the entire Imperium will fall apart.(civil war will break out, one side will believe he has returned, the other refuses to)

In a Cadia story, Cypher enters Abaddon's room, and of of Abaddons bodyguard wants to attack him.
Cypher shoots him, and Abaddon doesn't even say something about it. Makes you wonder. Maybe Abaddon knows.

Cypher survived the fight with an C'tan, which no spacemarine (even commanders, etc) have done as of yet. (this was a 1 on 1 fight)

Remember Cypher calls himself the voice of the emperor. He's been sending weird messages into the warp. This is supposedly to Call for his loyals, the Primarches who went into the warp after him. If they stand with him, he has a much bigger chance of being believed.

ps:This is just purely a rumor, believe nothing, trust no one (erm...)

Theres a bug. Just before you drop into a MP game, go into the Unit Painter and resave the scheme you want to use. This will fix it.

Tbh abaddons hatred of the imperium and especially the emporer would of ment he would of killed or attempted to kill cypher on sight. Remember he was totally dedicated to Horus and he was the one who lead the squad to reteave the corpse.

Abaddon was never totally dedicated to Horus. Abaddon thought Horus was weak for giving the Emperor a chance, and personally tore the claw from Horus' corpse.

That Cypher theory is interesting, but has almost NO basis in the canon whatsoever.

Abaddon not killing Cypher doesn't exactly lend credence to your theory either, as a matter of fact, it really sort of debases it completely. It more suggests that Cypher is an agent of Chaos than the Emperor.

It was HORUS who respected and loved the Emperor at some level - Abaddon has no such weakness.

Firstly, you dont need to make a new image, just work on the JPG and save it as a targa right at the end.

Secondly, when areas of the image show up as transparent on photoshop (checkered), this does not mean they are transparent in game. Targa uses an alpha layer to determine its transparencies, so you must create an alpha layer with a mask to define your transparent areas.

Also, make sure your end targa is exactly 64x64 px, in RGB colour mode, and saved as 32 bit uncompressed

Put in badges/banners dir and your done.

If all this fails, mail me the image and i'll fix it up, and tell you what was up with it.

Have you guys figured out if theres any way to get banners to work for Eldar, Chaos and Orks?

Mine work fine on space marines but the others are just the blank/default flag, like the chaos one is the flame.

Yeah, Ive gotten them to work for the other races, you just have to look harder to see them.

On the Orks the only thing I can see is the custom banners over the LP's and maybe one on the Orky Fort (havent confirmed if that flag shows it), have yet to look really close at each unit to see if they sport a badge.

On the Eldar I believe you can see the custom banner over the LP, and the only place I have found the badge so far is on the Wraithlords head (sarcophagus?). Thats not to say other units dont have them, just havent looked hard enough.

As for Chaos I have almost no experience whatsoever with playing them. My roomate plays em so Ill ask him when he gets home if he can see them.

Photoshop6, when saving a TGA, asks you what bit per pixel you'd like, you have to choose 32bit for the game. Beyond that, nothing is asked.

If someone could tell me how to make sure it's not compressed, or give me a hand with alpha layers or whatever, I'm sure I could figure it out, I just have next to no experience with TGAs, all my work is done for websites.

Be warned though, most of the banner images out there aren't squared and look squished when you go to 64x64, which isn't supposed to be the way they'll be retail.


I don't know if anyone has addressed this yet but...

If you put your banner graphic in a pic editor like GIMP and make it look correct at 64x80 then scale the image to 64x64 it will get squished down... then when DOW stretches it back out it looks just about right. Charon and anyone else who has the badges and banners thing should be able to figure out what I'm talking about.

Banners now work for Orks in 1.4. Also, the aforementioned tactic of starting with a banner that's 64x90, then squishing it and letting DoW stretch it out works quite nicely. :)

EDIT: Actually, correction. I'm not even sure it expands the banners at all. Despite the distortion in the Army Painter window, in game, the 64x64 look unstretched....

Everytime you join a game (the game LOBBY) click the paint bucket below your name. Make sure yoru badge/banner are selected, click apply, click save, click back. Play. It'll show up in game. You have to do this in EVERY game.

Chaos/Eldar banners dont work atm. Space marine & Ork do though. If you still cant get your banner to show up, send it to tehfluff@darkfalls.net and I'll fix it for you. Its probably missing an alpha layer or something else retarded... the how to make badges thread says you dont have to have one if you dont want to use transparency, but when I dont have one the badges and/or banners dont work correctly all of the time.

Well, IE cannot read .tga files, so unless you have an image editor or previewer, there really isn't much of a way to view them.

The files need to be right clicked, choose Save As, and then save it to your C:\Program Files\THQ\Dawn of War\Badges directory, and they'll show up in your Army Painter.
I did this and they do not show up in the army painter , i can see them in my computer but i can't open them .....im confused with this
