View Full Version : I had high hopes for this game

I had high hopes for this game and i feel a little dissapointed, let me say that following this game online the screenshots and the movies etc i thought it looked very good, but in game you hardly zoom in as the zoom functions are aqward and its had to get them back to the proper position for fighting. The result is that the game might as well be 2d! Theres no follow option for units or a cinematic camera mode!

Second Point: The tech tree is completed way too fast, now ive tried low resources and its still way too fast.

Third point: Theres a severe lack of units in this game! If the single player game is just the marines i dread to think at what rate the units will be introduced. I think the game needs a better variety of units (no doubt in my mind).

Fourth Point: The maps imo are terrible, the only one i play is the 4v4 one as its the only 1 i feel is of good design, but could be better, theirs also hardly any terrain use at all. It feels like your fighting in a maze not a battlefield.

fith point: Why isent their a battle mode where teams pick units from a list where each unit has a cost and the host can set the number of points for the total army, with no building just a fight over terrain. I think this feature would be very nice.

sixth point: Whats with the unit cap? i feel its way too low, please raise it at least let the host set the unit caps to small, medium or large. why not? way too many dreadnaughts to marine ratio :\ just raise the troop cap to 30 or 40.

The biggest dissapointments are the lack of variety of units, and the fact that the games best feature the 3d doesent really get used, i never zoom in its just too much hassle, and changing the camera angle is just a right pain, is their even a button to instatly get back to the default camera angle/position?

I pray theirs more units in the full game and 3d options or ill probably just be buying rome totalwar this fall.

1: I agree
2: Well, this game is action and should be fast
3: I agree
4: I like the maps tilesets, but yes, make it a little less like a maze.
5: Yay, that would rock!
6: I think it´s ok, because you shouldn´t even reach the cap. See #2

'...but in game you hardly zoom in as the zoom functions are aqward...'

I thought the zoom was very easy to use myself. Push the scroll wheel on the mouse in one direction to zoom in, push it the other direction to zoom out.

How hard can it be to scroll in or out?
But yes, in battle I never zoom in, too busy jumping all over the screen to keep all my unit's doing what they are supposed to do and not run away(how hard is it to understand the "stand still" command?).

I agree on the inf cap, right now the screen is crawling with dreads and barely no infantery(untill Termies starts to drop down on you).

wow

I don't understand your complaints about the camera.

The game has alot of troops. As much as the TT game? no. Comparable to other RTSs? yes. Would I like a few more? Why not.

As to your popcap and tech tree complaint, I'm not sure if I agree with you or I secretly think you play just annihilate games.

The maps are standard fare I would say. Nothing great, but not as bad as you make it sound

As to your fifth point, if you want to play that mode, I recommend the table top game. While I would like to see it myself, I'm partially suspicious this won't come. Much for the same reasons why a true conversion of the TT will never happen, GW just doesn't want their TT experience to be diminished (read: people play a computer over buying their miniatures, paint, books, and editions)

I personally never use alt myself. But I do zoom in and out with the scroll wheel on my mouse.

1-Yeah, I agree

2-It's meant to be fast. It's supposed to be action, action and more action.

3-There are some units I would have wanted to see in game but it creates more hassles to balance. The devs might introduce more units after gold but it's just like asking for more races to be included: in other words, wait until an expansion rolls out.

4-I like the maps the way they are. I'm more interested in seeing the other maps when the game hits the shelves.

5-Hope for someone to make a mod and play that.

6-I agree, the infantry unit cap is a pain.

If your so upset about these things you should just input them into the "Bug Submission" at Fileplanet (http://www.fileplanet.com/betacenter/dawnofwar/). Im still DL'ing the game right now but fromwhat I've heared, It sounds really fast paced and an RTS game able to be rated M :D

1. main problem here is the game moves too fast. They spent so much work on the animations, its a shame that the default speed is so fast that you barely get to appreciate any of it. True you can player slower games, but they are unpopular already and i cant envision that will change much when retail comes out.

2. Tech tree completed too fast? Try orcs :P

3. Again as someone pointed out, its definitely comparable for the 1st release of any rts game. Not counting the ee style games. But in those games as well, a cavalry unit is still just that, be it horseback, chariot or armored based. They arent really all that different, just different levels of power.

4. I have seen a dev state that 20+ maps will be shipped in the retail version PLUS a map maker, these few maps are just to whet the appetite.

5. This sounds like some attempt to create a TT mode. Thei have stated 1000 times that it wouldnt be in the release. If someone wants to create a mod of this, i would think its feasible, but given the rate that units die, unless you each had dozens upon dozens of units, i cant see how it would be a lot of fun. Game would be over in a snap.

6. Unit caps and support numbers are still be juggled, they have already changed sense the closed beta has started. I would be shocked if they dont change again.

I really think no matter how many units they put in, there would always be a cry for that ONE unit that didnt make the cut, balancing is a awful hard thing (as it has to be balanced vs every other single unit), but as i doubt the balance will even be finalized till a few post release patchs, i dont know if we will see new units till the modders show up or the exp comes out. Seems to me any exp has to add a few units to the existing races as well as adding full new races.

To return to default view press the backspace.

Enjoy Rome: TW. Personally i am a bit tired of the TW series.

Do we really need ANOTHER RTS of that era? I dont think so.

well, i'm only gunna reply to the first part about rotating...wot i would like, is if the minimap rotated with the camera...that way, well, it's a lot more intuative. personally, i would very much like that

i don't like rotating, cos say u rotate 180, scrolling up scrolls down on the minimap...

Well i suppose on a positive note the games creators seem to support moding and thats good news. Still think the unit cap should be an option in mp games (why not let the host choose) some people like it as it is and some people want more some people want less LOW MEDIUM HIGH would be fine, i still think a battle mode would be nice if the map was designed for it, ill think of setting up a mod team for that.

I feel the game has a good solid structure tho and thats good, i love the inclusion of morale into an rts (means you cant just go piling in). I always laughed at the red alert games where units stood and shot each other till ones energy went to zero. About rome total war it cant really be considered an rts more a tactical battle game with risk type elements in a different section. The backspace to return to standard camera angle is good (i always had problems moving the minimap when i changed view) guess ill get my wireless mouse out it has a scroll wheel (should help with the zoom). Another thing that does bother me tho is the amount of turrets im seeing in mp games (maybe pop energy consumption on them or something).

If I remember correctly...Just play Take and Hold with low starting resources and low starting rate, should be slow enough for ya :)

No BAD, No CnCish Energy consumption. If you want to take out turrets, use artillery.

1. As Morkar stated hit backspace to return the camera to normal angle, zooming in and out isnt a prob, and if you want to use alt to view a battle (I know I like to) then use Backspace to return camera to normal for your orders and stuff.

2. While able to be played as such, DoW isnt really an Anhillation type RTS. There is a great Objective-cap system implemented in this game, and most Take and hold games arent drag out long haul fights. Usually in those games you are worrying less about the Tech Tree and more about pumping out troops to either reinforce, or take a critical objective.

3. The variety of units in the game is well thought out and balanced, each army has basic troops which can be upgraded to fit roles, and then theres specialists which fit very nicely into their respective roles. a majority of unit variety is based on how you tool up your troops, much like in the TT game.

4. The maps in the game all have useable terrain, granted you cant go up in buildings, but watch a 4 man scout squad behind sandbags take out a 8-man spacemarine squad in the open and tell me there is no terrain. each map has different degrees of cover in different areas. Whether or not you use it is up you you.

5.While a battle mod would be nice, I wouldnt hold my breath. maybe someone would be nice enough to mod that, and thankfully Relic is very helpfull to the mod community, but that isnt exactly the style of game DoW is.

6. As the game stands right now it has a pretty large unit cap, even compared to other RTS's, troops-wise you can field about 100 marines, like 200+ orks, or somewhere between there in eldar. of course specialists are more expensive, but that balances the game out, and fits in with the storyline and basic design of the game.

Honestly, Im very pleased with this game, and eagerly look forward to its release, i was sorely dissappointed with WC3, and what ive played of this game so far is awesome. Building squads of guys insead of individual troops, interesting objectives, and a great supply system (Thank the Emperor no more resource mining!!!) make this one of the best RTS games ive played to date.
Thanks
