ok i've been collecting eldar for over a year and still never got the hang of using good tactics! so what unit does what?
Really ? I found Eldar to be one of most powerful armies at all.
I play chaos - 5 years, still winning, so I chose Eldar to change it (it isn´t so funny as it was when I began). It´s even worse - still winnig.
I play this way - If opponent isn´t able to see me, he won´t be able to shoot at me... So I have some vypers with Crystal tar... (CTM) and starcannons, farseer - guide, 5 wraithguard in serpent - linked brightlance, one squad of guardians (10) + brightlance- fire prism (with CTM), wraithlord with brightlance and alot of rangers (20-30).
Rangers infiltrate - trying to fire off heavy weapons. In each turn you fly from cover with your skimmers, fire and get back. Nasty. And brightlances can get you rid of tanks very quickly. When your opponent approaches, you fly to him with serpent and unload wraithguard. In most cases, his army is shattered this time...
To single units (which I think are usable)
Avatar - Nice against lone HQ, but easily shootable
farseer - good booster
banshees - good in cc (not against da okz or tyranids)
wraithguard - strong, "special rule - the shall know no HQ"
guardians - meatshield
rangers- snipers...and troops - really good
vypers - with starcannons and CTM - absolute bane to everything
wraithlord- unkillable monster
falcon - I think it is useless, but many oppose me in that
prism - useful
dark reapers - nice against marine

i would reverse those 2. with the new skimmer rules....... your falcon can move 12 and still fire the pulse cannon, starcannon and shuricannon/TL shuricats. skimmer mocing fast added with a holofield and spiritstones makes for a VERY tough to kill unit with a pretty respectable amount of firepower, as well as a small troop carrying capacity. i use at least one falcon to carry a farseer (guide all those shots the falcon is pumping out) and he can use fortune to help keep alive any troops you might disembark from your other transports in the area, banshees for instance become much more survivable in that case. also combining a falcon or 2 with a squad of warp spiders so that you guide a falcon and fortune the spiders makes for a very tough to kill harrasing force that will put out a LOT of firepower. fortune can also be devastatingly effective with a nice seer council being packed around in the falcon.
i find fire prisms to be of limited use, str9 blast with that huge range is nice.... but if you utilise the range than you really cant use any other weapons you might mount on it. with its BS 3 it only hits 50% of the time, and leaving a farseer just to guide it is a pretty big investment to just leave that farseer in the backfield. one good use ive been thinking of trying is to use the prism to get in thier faces. charge it straight up thier line, tank shocking and blasting away as i go. its cheaper than a falcon, and less important than both a falcon and wave serpent since it has no passengers. if you shove it right down thier throat they WILL want to fire at it, it could probably be worth its points in that kind of a situation, but not really my cup of tea.
vypers can be REALLY nasty when used with a CTM, however.... keep in mind that for a vehicle those things are made with spit and toilet paper. as an open topped vehicle with that kinda armor any tough unit sneezing in its direction will kill it. while the CTM should keep you behind cover, any good player will deal with them quickly if you are making a nuisance of them. that can be a good thing since they are devoting firepower to the vypers..... but still pretty frail for my tastes.
as for the others, pyro has a pretty good descrition for them i think. personally i hate guardians, beil tan for me please!
