View Full Version : Bombard Cannon Mini-Mod Idea

I think it would be interesting if there was some sort of Bombard Cannon Platform, or a Bombard Cannon Frigate. The Bombard Cannon would be like a vgr_bcforwardweapon but with extreme range and less damage.

Here are some ideas for the weapon specs:

Projectile speed - 10000
Range - 100000 (Longer than Sajuuk's main gun, I beleive.)
Damage - 1000 (Much less than vgr_bcforwardweapon, obviously)

Other stats would be the same except for the weapon firing delay. I can't remember what the WeaponTuning.xls name for it is, but it is set to 5 at default. Changing it to 1.5 would make it line up perfectly and make sense with the lower damage. This way you could send a scout to the enemy base to get telemetry data, then swivel your Bombard Cannon Turrets around and let loose with the guns. They would obviously take a while to kill bigger targets, but if you make it so that they have a limited ammo supply or take resources to fire, you could make them accurate against small targets. That way you could make it possible (not guaranteed, but possible) to take out fighter squadrens with them. They would take a lot of resources to build, but could be that one deciding factor in an assault. Imagine this:

The Hiigaran fleet is constructing a Battle Cruiser. The Vaygr are sending a fighter swarm to take out the shipyard, but they will take too long to arrive. A probe positioned above the Hiigaran base shows the exact location of the shipyard's Capital Facility. Vaygr Bombard Cannon Turrets open fire and take out the Capital Facility before the Hiigaran's can complete the Battle Cruiser. The Vaygr strike force arrives and turns the shipyard into spacedust.

Once I learn more about modding I might try making it myself.

hmm a platform, well u could steal Sajuuks Cannon and stick it in a Ion Cannon Platform, but u need to make the range bigger and less, probably
i dun know, probably modelling and lua file exchanging, also new subsystem mounts and new ship detail, also the .events file and also the subsystems for the guns so they can get taken out...

I have made a very cheap way of doing it. I made a copy of the Vgr_PlatformWeapon_Gun or whatever and changed the name to Vgr_BombardCannonPlatform. Then I changed the weapons it uses by copying the weapons it normally uses and renaming them. I also changed their projectile type to be the same as the Trinity Cannon and set fire to Normal Only and made it able to target SC. Then I made a new research item and a new build item so you can make them. Voila! Vaygr Bombard Cannon ready for action! I decided to cut back on the fire rate and up the Research and Production costs because having an array of 15 of those used to be really easy, and one scout provided enough sensor data to allow the destruction of the entire enemy fleet, so I upped the costs and time to research and create so that it's now reasonably balanced. After some tweaking, I may release the .big file.
