Space Marines in general, or Assault Marines?

They are used, there is a screenshot on a fan site (the german one I think don't quote me on it) showing both an Air unit (Ork fighta bomma) and Space Marines flying in their tanks - whatever the site is it is link-able via the "links" page on DoW primary site.

Okay, I did some homework for you fellas

This is a direct link to the image of S. Marines flying with jetpacks

Assault marines are the ones with the jetpacks...and they use them. ohter marines such as normal tactical units have what looks like jetpacks on but i don't think that's what they are. from what i know those packs are more or less what helps power the marines armor and it's functions.

the pack of the tactical marines are for power/waste/air filter/ etc

Yes, other space marines have a rebreather/sensors/suit systems pack, which doesn't incorporate jets. Only Assault marines have jump packs.

You think tactical marines have jet packs until you see assult marines... those jet packs are huge!!! The T. marine ones are most likely used in zero gee for moving around. Every once in awhile you need to send someone out to fix something on the old battle barge (but dont servitors do all the repairs?).

Normal Space Marines (that is, Tactical Squads) don't have jetpacks. The backpack they wear incorporates air filtration, waste, power, and a number of other functions (it is possible that it has small maneuvering jets for zero-G conditions, but I've never seen it mentioned). Assault Squads have jump packs, which they do use - every time they move.

If I remember correctly the 1st edition WH40K rulebook they had a description of all the parts of the marines power armour/armor and what their main functions were, and your description of the marine's pack seems to be what the book had in it.

As stated above, the simple answer is that they're not jetpacks, they're exhaust vents.

The large exhaust vents on the swivel points at the top of the back are stablising jets.

Moving this to the TT forum, since this isn't really a DoW topic.

In Obvious tactics they were used for Zero-g maneuvers.

And they can self destruct, causing a MASSIVE explosion. Because they are sub-atomic powered I think.

that's pretty absurd no offense

Are they like power suits

I remember reading somewhere that power armour is indeed nuclear powered. Although I'm pretty sure that it's fusion and not fission.

ok the suit it self weights like 2 tons..... and so any man inside would be crushed alife.... the guy's made for the suits are 1st like 256 pounds 8 foot of soiled muscle.... the suits are like some sort of nuclaer fusion power that basicly with the gift of there technology turns them on so you can move in them and do stuff with them..... the helm's are commotions helms..... and the backpack's are the power source and also make the armour breathable for the guy in the suit and the ports can move up and down to help in zero G combat....... the assault troops have a modfired backpack to give enough thrust to give them that short jump skill........ most of the time marines die in combat cause the eviroment isnt breath able and like the helm is punched or there back pack is destory causeing them to blow up..... but that was the MK I suit the new MKII the standred design suit over came that they made the armour lighter and instead of just using think metal to stop bullets they now have thinker suits with like a marget plating all over the idea is they replee the bullets away but some get through every now and then may cause the suit is over us in repleeing bullet's or a blade get's through cause it does work in melee ^_^ ....... i hope that clear's up some problems...... and i'd like to stop flammers now saying it's my summry of what i've got from the book's..... so you cans chose how they did it
