i've followed GW from the 1st edition and have never found a definite straight-up answer and i believe never will. therefore for fun and laughter i now seek out your opinions on the topic.

p.s. personally i like to believe its really the size of the barrel of the gun its fired out from :D

I've always thought it would be slightly larger than a shotgun shell

.75 caliber

OR 3/4 of an inch,

OR 19.05 mm

In other words, a pretty big F'n shell.

Yep, .75 caliber. This is pretty well established.

Isn't that about the same size as a 40mm grenade round?

shouldn't the shell be bigger? i mean look at the size of the barrels on the guns. the barrel is almost fist-sized.....

heh i always thought it would be really cool if the SMs were firing teacup sized shells on full auto at their enemies :D

in humungous amounts.

kinda like in matrix revolutions, the battle in the docking bay of zion.

Fluff info is on page 60 of 3E rulebook. (Nice schematic too) :)

.75 caliber is BIG. Biggest thing I've fired in real life is .57 caliber and that had KICK with a single shot! .44 Mag has got some guts too.

If the bolter rounds are really .75 cal then it wouldn't be practical to put them to use in a near SMG-like weapon (the bolters) if you still intend to use it as an automatic weapon. I mean, look at the magazine on those things! Those would probably hold only what, 20 at best? Would not it be more effective to put them in a rifle or something?

The schematic shows about 20 rounds per mag in the storm bolter. What does being an smg have to do with it? the Mac-10 has a 30 round mag and empties in under 3seconds on full auto!

The mac-10 has small bullets, bolters have huge fucking bullets.

its actually bigger than .75 GW made a real life copy of it for a promo duing the warlords weekend and it much bigger than a .75 shell... It like double that...

It's a huge gun! Of course a real world .50 cal shell is about 5 or 6 inches long from end to end and the sniper rifle that uses it holds 5 shots, I think?

I thought it was the H-bolter that was .75 with the bolter being .5... all bolt rounds had their own propellant and an explosive warhead using an impact delay of like .1 milliseconds?

*shrugs*

They are basically very small rockets.

I think the diff with the H-Bolter is just rate of fire not caliber. Kinda like semi-auto or three round burst vs full on rock and roll.

Well given the size of the round, you would only need 1 to take out most enemies.
