Are they possible? Has anyone tested them? It would be really interesting to have a mod that supports one/both of them...

There is a line in most unist files that says: GameData["moving_ext"]["is_land"] = true which implies that there can be non-land units, but that may be legacy code.

But what about the Ork plane the "drops" the buildings? and the plane that delivers the space marine vehicles? (sorry, not familiar with wh40k names :P), I don't really have high hopes for naval units, but I hope air units are possible, maybe even with a workaround...

The thunderhawk is a valid model and its LUA is in the same folder as that of the other units...

data/attrib/sbps/races/space_marines/space_marine_squad_thunderhawk.lua

Whether it has any animations aside from the vehicle building landing is another question though...

Air units....highly unlike. How would the UI cope with it? How would you move them? Some wacky new 3d move format, a week before game release? Naval units......they may be able to be done, but not sure.

What do you mean how would they move? they will probably move in one plane only , like vehilces, you shouldn't be able to control the height, like other RTS games, you could have them jet fighter style, so they attack go land on pad, thing is if it would be possible to have them VTOL or not.VTOL would be simpler, but will limit the function of a jet fighter, I think that's how all dow air units function though.

Or as helicopter style, so they would attack and land, or stay in air and have a "land/take off button".

In the beta, you could teleport/jump units on to water, and they could move around in water. As Eldar you cold jump in a bonesinger and build underwater structures. That was fun :)

I was in the beta, never noticed that though, sounds more like a bug to me, unless it's shallow water...

The Problem is they are planes they fly around.
They didnt hover.
If this would be implement most become useless.
Cause Flyer will shift the balance of all races,
and ground tactics!

You could do what's been done in a few other RTS games where you "call in" the air units to strike certain areas, like the Orbital Bombardment but more precise and different animations. This would also be in line with how it's done in the TT game, to an extent.

As for Naval units, from what I know they generally don't fight in the water simply because it's not practical what with storms etc. You fight on land, in air and in space, but noone likes to get wet and rusty :P

The Orks already have a model in game they can use its the Fighter- Bomber they have to drop junk to build stuff. SM has the Thunderhawk that drop vehicles off at your base.
It would have to be teir 3 ability because it should be kind of hard to get, it should be cheap. For the reason it should be just a bombing run or a short stay over a target where it shoots with its guns for a few seconds and then flies off to refuel and restock. It should be easier to do then build a aerial unit from scrath, because you can put it together by taking FX and SFX from the game itself.
