View Full Version : Whats the Difference Between SM Chapters?
15th Sep 04, 2:43 AM
Does each chapter have its own special abilities or rules?
Are there specific advantages and disadvantages that one chapters units(vehicles and all) have that the others do not?
Is the only real difference in their backstory and their special characters?
For example whats the diff between a blood angels army and a space wolves army?

It's a bit of a mix, on the whole the different named chapters do have their own particular flavours. For instance a Space Wolf army is a lot more hit things hard, and hit em again. They ahve a very Viking feel to them, and play that way also, the Blood angels have a few different touches as well.
Etc Etc. So yes each Chapter with it's own Codex is different, underneath it all they are still the same, but they have a few different touches.
(Or to look at the Eldar Craftworlds for example, what went where was altered so the army would have a different organisation. Some units harder to field, rarer other units more common etc)

well the paint jobs are differnt, so if the background, each tends to be themed around a differnt idea.
but each chapter has its own rules, some have their own codexs (the important ones at least) altho they usally are just varients on the normal SM codex.

All Chapters have a different background and history, and most offer something unique. You have codex chapters, like the Ultramarines, Imperial Fists etc. Then you have Chapters that follow the Codex very little, if at all (Space Wolves are a good example of this). Example one, Blood Angels have there Death Company, Sanguinary priests, etc. Space Wolves follow a far different orginisation. They are formed into Great Company's, and they have there Grey Hunters, Blood Claws, Wolf Priests, etc. All Chapters are really unique, and offer something really exciting to each individual.

It basically boils down to this:
I'm a blue space marine, I cost 15 points.
I'm a red space marine, I get a 1 in 6 chance to fleet of foot everyturn, and I also get +1 S and +1 I on the charge, I cost 15 points.
I'm a black and white space marine, I always hit my opponent on a 3+ in close combat, if I fail a morale check, I charge instead of run, I cost 15 points.
I'm a green space marine, I love plasma guns, if I fail a morale check, I stand still and shoot instead of run, I cost 15 points.

Nicely summed up.

I dig Black Templars because they are RIGHTEOUS! I love Space Wolves because, well, they remind me of my dear little Dwarf army for Fantasy.
I hate, I Hate, I HATE PETER PAN, er, I mean BLOOD ANGELS.
Nasty, wicked, evil little vampire buggers...

There were 20 initial Legions in the First Founding.
As time developed, the Legions were broken down into smaller Chapters, each with their own identity and independant of their "parent" chapter, although they share the same Geneseed (the genetic encoding unique to each of the 20 Legions).
Chapters vary greatly both in terms of battlefield doctrine, adherence to Imperium and Codex regulations, and even loyalty to the Emperor above their Primarch.
Each Chapter is as unique as a fingerprint.

Basically Iwata summed it up best. Some of the better known chapters have been given their own rules to represent their individuality, but with the coming of the 4th ed codex you should be able to make your own Chapters Codices, or the effect of.

let me put it this way , Ultramarines and all the other ones in the 3rd edition Codex are all the same except in special characters, armour color, that's it. Blood Angels on the other hand are kind of the same but instead they have Furioso Dreadnoughts, Veteran Assault Squads, Death Company, Honour Guard, Sanguinary High Priests and that's it. Space Wolves are completely different, Scouts, Wolf Guard, Wolf Priests, Rune Priests, Blood Claws, Long Fangs, Leman Russ tanks, Iron Priests, Wolf Lords, they also have 13 great companys, the rest I can't rember the rest right now. The Salamanders are the slowest chapter due to their homeplanet, but also have some of the best type of equipment. Really that's all the differences. Black Templars I forgot to mention are the only Chapter that mixes Scouts and Tactical Marines togeather, have Marshals as leaders, and must take a Emperor's Champion because of their belives. That's all of it last I checked.
