View Full Version : Landspeeder Tactics

I've heard some say the landspeeder is rubbish. tosh!

The landspeeder's main role is either as a light harrasement unit (Fallen City, you can skirt round buildings drawing fire, great distraction, maybe even kill something, and it can jump away if in deep trouble)
or as a support unit ( keep a couple with your rhinos/whirlwinds to keep pesky raiders off)

any other ideas?

good to help us marine players...

They can chew through infantry like no tomorrow, remeber its 'Infantry' not
'heavy Infantry' ie: most ork and eldar units plus four of them can eat through marines as well they are just a nice and tasty fast support unit, also good harrasment units.

extremely good as a hit and run unit - especially in numbers 4-5. VS eldar their weak armor will be their undoing if so much as two brightlances are in vicinity. And if a webway is nearby - you might as well move on to next target as smart eldar will do one of two things (or both)

1. load all infantry into a webway
2. activate shroud and build bl's

They are NOT rubbish, as much as some people say they are. One nice role I've given land speeders to do is flying around Criticals and Strategy points owned by opponent. It gives me clues on how many points they are drawning, Speeders can wax Listening Posts, and best funny thing I've used them for is chasing opponent builder units. Another use is to pull security for Scouts who are busy claiming a SP or CP. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Speeders the fastest unit SM have?? (except for delivering Drop Pods, which Speeders can spot for?)

They are excellent at hit and run tactics and there speed make it an good reinforce unit to kill infantry.

They should arm the Rhino with twin linked bolters or make it use 1 support instead of 2.

They are also great support to Assault marines.

2 ASM sqads and 2 or 3 LS behind enemy lines are verry verry nasty.

Indeed.

I like them a lot personally, the cut down orkses like there's no tomorrow. They are dirt cheap and come out as fast as a tactical squad.

When my resources are high I will use them like suicide squads. Build three or four and just send them in to stir things up a bit. Like a fire and forget rocket.

I know this is wishful thinking but I would love to see a Multi Cooker mounted on them as an upgrade opion at some point in the games future history.

That is what I do with Landspeeders :)

I have also used them as harassers & scouts. Their great little buggers too bad we dont have options for weapon upgrades like a LandSpeeder Tempest(Assault Cannon & Missile Launcher, kinda like a flying Dreadnought).

Has anyone tried a pure squadron of them yet ?

Yeah I made 10 of them once.

I was playing against the AI and using my marines to cause people some serious pain. I took the speeders and just told them to attack ground all the way to the other side of the board.

I expected them to die, and I had plenty of replacements queued up so I was just being silly.

About 3 minutes later I looked back at them. They made it to the other side of the map! There were only 4 left and they were wounded but I can only imagine how many kills they racked up.

Best thing about that LS/AM jumping combo when hitting an expantion/base, is the 3 dreads deep striking in right after. ;) It's brutal.

When I think Landspeeder I think mobile heavy bolter turret :)

Can be very handy.

I dont have retail yet but i use like 4 squads of land speeders to take down power plants or scout ahead etc always fun to mow down workers ^.^

It is even possible to win a battle using nothing but landspeeder, but i wouldn't mak eit my primary strategy.

But as others already said:

Perfect harassment Unit.

They are fast, they can jump and they pack a hefty punch against Infantry (and a good punch against heavy infantry as well).

They go down like clay pidgeons from Missile Launcher, so you better disable them first using other units like Assault marines and/or Deepstruck squads/dreads.

But by the time you have deepstrike you no longer really need landspeeders. They are more of an early game unit.

I would build them before i build Dreads, since they come out pretty fast and are quite effective by the time they come out.

They lack the versatility of Vypers, though....

They are quite good if you have a base with multiple entrances, and not enough troops to defend all avenues of attack. Their speed allows them to be moved and deployed at any trouble-spot within seconds. While they can be of use, I personally have almost always preferred to build Dreadnoughts.

early game, LS is fantastic. i usually build a few before i get into my dreads,
the LS packs a big punch, i have them on the flanks (where it wont be fired on first)
my tac squad will take all the fire and reinforce. works great on small maps where u
can rush and withdraw quickly if it gets to hairy.
Most players wont have any vehicles when you have your first two LS

Agreed it would make them invaluable when unexpected vehicules pop up where you dont need them.suprised it wasnt included in the first place

They're also quite handy for chasing fleeing troops after a skirmish.

Thx, Davor...I must say, it SOUNDS brutal.

In late game, they are actually quite useful in strafing runs against squiggies etc

I always have one or two in tier 3 simply to scout, excellent and when the fighting starts they can lend their support. Their jump ability is good for finding drop pod landing zones and if they die, well it's no biggie. :D

I once used 5 of them to utterly purge a few dozen orks that were attacked a few heavy bolter turrets, I they tried to retreat and the land speeders just followed and strafed, the guy lost 20-30 orks at least.

And above all, if your base is under attack and your in desperate need of defence, you can pump those things out like no tommorrow, saved me from defeat a few times.

I'm at work so I really cant test it but are they any good at distracting a seer council? I haven't had problems with seer council in 1vs1 games yet but in team games I'll get attacked by an Eldar opponent using Seer Council backed up with a couple of squads of guardians - Generally my tactical squads and FC get chewed up pretty quickly ( I realise this is not uncommon at all, I have seen plenty of the other threads on that issue ). What I'm curious in knowing is the effect a reasonably well micro'd group of speeders can have on the SC + Guardians and if the speeders are going to go down with out having a noticable effect

When i think landspeeder i think harrasment, scouting, poking at infantry *well poking with a freaking big assault cannon*, and support ofcourse :P

there's nothing quite as fun as a landspeeder for a stylish flank attack. Against the AI I've had a big arse ork mob (probably 40 troops) come charging at my base which was defended by only 2 squads of heavy bolter equipped marines (in heavy cover) and a pair of HB turrets. The orks come screaming in at me, losing troops all the time to massed fire and then as their numbers were thin, the airborne cavalry jump in on their rear and box them whereupon they get massacred like gretchen...

dunno, i would think more people use landspeeders than people use vipers.

Eldars got their platforms and need to get a stone before making them i think.

Personally i wouild like if tracks and speeders could be built in squadrons(like 1-3 and able to be reinforced), they hardly do much by themselves so you prob run them around as a squadron anyhow, if its balanced or not is another thing.

I run them in 3 flights of 3. It would be nice if they came out that way, then I wouldn't have to group them.
