View Full Version : I can't connect to Multiplayer?

I recently got the DoW retail- and I was testing everything to make sure they work (because my computer has had problems in the past). Campaign works, painter works, options work, skirmish works, etc etc.. I click multiplayer- it says "LAN, Online, Direct Host, Direct join". I clicked Online- It says "Please wait while we connect you to your online game". A few seconds later, it connects.

Everything is fine and dandy, right? Heres the problem.
I try signing in with my beta account. After typing in the correct username and password, it freezes up for about 20 seconds- AND THEN says "Couldn't connect to the lobby system, check your internet connection, and if you have them, your firewall and router.".

So i'm like "Ok.. Maybe beta accounts don't work".

So I go to make a new account (Via the DoW button above login). I type in my email, my username, and my desired password. I hit ok- and it sits there for over 10 minutes saying "Creating the account with the online lobby system". After 10 minutes I realize its not going anywhere, so I hit cancel (Note: I Used a different username/password/email address than my previous beta account- and its a unique name I made so nobody else would be using it as their account).

So I sit here- Like "Uhm...", realizing I just paid 50 dollars for a game to play the... Campaign?

My question is- I've heard from a lot of people I wasn't supposed to get the game this early, and my store might have put it on the shelves a little too soon. so i'm thinking that you guys may not have enabled the servers yet. Is anyone else having this problem? Are the servers even scheduled to be up? Does it have to do with my router (I have no firewalls, except the one on my router)? I'm not smart with routers- and its not a Linksys so nobody (that I know, at least) knows how to 'port forward' it (whatever that is).

I'm not trying to be a bother- but could someone help me out, here? I was looking forward to playing. I was gonna play the campaign first, anyways, but its sad to see I can't play online.. it feels like wasted money.

I'm having the exact same problem. I'm hoping its just that GameSpy hasn't activated the servers yet as the game was just available today in my area.

Try again, and immediately after it fails, come here and post the contents of your warnings.log file.

As far as I know, the retail version is up and running.

Do you have any kind of firewall that you need to give DoW permission to access the internet? You know like Mcafee, Norton, Port forwarding on a router, and etc.

Same problem. ANY communications with the mp servers, user server, is AGONIZINGLY slow. Sounds like Relic is getting f'ed in the a by gamespy.

Can't connect from here either, following up with GameSpy support.

Yep, it's a GameSpy issue, they're looking in to it.

EDIT: seems like other people are having troubles and its a GameSpy issue. I'll keep trying and see if it gets better.

Its not a firewall issue, already checked that. After I click logon it says it can't connect to the server and dumps me back to the connect screen. This is from last time I tried it and I removed all the info in the file that looked like it wasn't involved with the multiplayer stuff. I was also in on the beta and had no trouble connecting. Tried my beta ID (normal GameSPy ID) and registering a new one and had connection problems both times.

Incase anyone missed it, it is a gamespy issue.

I tryed something different and it appears to work.. sort of. I created a new account under my origional beta account name (gamespy as well), with the exact password and email address and such, and it took me straight to the lobby.. so I was like "cool" - and then proceeded to chat with 6 (a massive number) of people who also figured it out. Then I logged out, tryed logging in the regular way, and it did the firewall/router thing again. Strangly, I tryed logging in the regular way "1 more time" and it worked, after downloading some.. update? Shrug.

Moving to Bug Sub.

Sorry- haven't put much effort into the relic forums browsing yet. Right now i'm just on a come-and-go route to figure out this problem.

When it does the firewall/router thing, heres what it says..
Well damnit, Its working fine now..Just went to login and such and everything, and its making a liar out of me >.<.

Gah.. I feel stupid.

Do you have any kind of firewall that you need to give DoW permission to access the internet? You know like Mcafee, Norton, Port forwarding on a router, and etc.

Nope.. my brother does, though. And it was doing the same thing till he got a popup asking whether he wanted to unblock DoW or not, though. And he did and it works. (We have 2 copies, so its not because of cd-keys)

EDIT: Ah, see that 3 or 4 of you posted while I was posting this message. Glad to see it wasn't me- thanks a bunch :).

If it's working now, it looks like gamespy must have resolved it.

Come back and post here if it happens again.

Your solution was likely just hitting the servers when they were responding quickly enough to log on, pure luck more than anything. Hopefully the issues will be gone soon.

Double Post

yep, all seems to be good now

Well i can get on and everything just fine. But when i try to Join a Game it sits on "please wait connecting to game" for ages. Then i get the message "The host could not be found, the host may have quit ot there may be connection issues, make sure you both have correctly configured connections, firewalls and routers." When i get back to Lobby the game i tried to connect to is still there. have tried 5 different games now.

I have turned off my firewall (tried 1st with just unblocking 40K), i have opened port 6112, and dont know what else to try.

I also cant host a game.

Gamespy's fixes may still be trickling down as they had to make some DNS changes. Wait for the changes to propagate (24 or so hours or more) and then try again.

For reference, did you have problems with the Beta?

You tried using the DMZ?

-Cough- Dont know how....

ÜberJumper

:-)

Log into your router, go to the Advanced Options tab. Find the DMZ Host tab, and put in the IP of your computer.

Note this completely exposes you to the internet, so you will have to rely on your software firewall.

Also note that you may have the Windows Firewall on (especially if you've gone to XPSP2) and may have to shut that off as well.

Bluhd_FM_Wuhlf

Well i cant. If i go to whatismyip.com and get my ip it is vastly different than the option i have for DMZ. For DMZ i can only change the last number, but all 4 numbers are different from whatismyip.

Bluhd_FM_Wuhlf

Well its definately the router. I just unplugged it and went directly through my Modem, and it worked fine.

Bluhd:

www.whatismyip.com gives you your router's public IP address. To get your computer's IP address, you need to go to Start>Run... type CMD and hit enter. At the command prompt, type IPconfig and hit enter. Your IP will be something like 192.168.1.100 or 101. THAT's the number you need to do port forwarding or DMZ to (when you port forwarded 6112 to your computer, what IP did you use?).

Uber. Thanks so much for your help. You are the man! With SMD and IPconfig it told me I was 192.168.1.101. I had it set to 192.168.1.100. I can join now.

Thankyou, Thankyou!

You're welcome. Remember, the router keeps your private network separated from the public internet. Make sure you shut that DMZ off when you're done (put a 0 in).

You can also try in the next couple of days to see if nat negotiation works properly for you.
