DOW and Spinning cd-rom icon of doom! :) [Archive]

After the installation of dawn of war when I start the game all I get is a spinning cd icon, from what I have been told and have read about it is a securerom icon. My system specs are a k8v se deluxe motherboard, amd 64 3000+ chip, 1gig of corsair 466mghz ram , a G-force 6800 gt , a 160 gig western digital hard drive and windows xp home. Before installing, I was able to run the open beta fine and the demo, no other game or application that I have has this problem. I took the pc back to where I had bought it and described the problem to the manger/tech and we started to trouble shoot it. We tried several different cd-rom drives, and combinations of cd/dvd burners to rule them out, also tried turnning off the dma settings. We tried many other different things including replacing cables. As a last resort, we replaced the hard drive reinstalled windows and sp2 and made sure every possible driver was up to date. Then we reloaded dawn of war and still got the same icon and to rule out that I might have got a bad cd, we installed the game on another low end system in the store and it worked fine. I am at a loss on what to do any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I have tried to contact thq support but it seems likes either their call center is down or their out to lunch and want you to use their automated system. Ijust got a email form thq, wanting directx log, maby that will help.

I have a similar problem. However I installed the game, played the 1st 3 missions, and went to do other things. I came back and tried to start up again and I keep getting the Spinning CD icon and no game. Nothing has changed on my system since I played it, not even a restart (which I tried after).
I am currently installing on my laptop to see if that has a similar problem.

This is a fresh install of windows, the only things loaded are service pack 2 and dow and nvidia drivers. At the time of instalation its was a brand new hd and had not even conected to the internet. There is no way it could be a virus or add ware.

I have been checking on the other threads this may help, its a long shot but my cd drive is a lite-on ltr 523275 and i cant find updated firmware for it.

Finaly got a hold of a live tech from thq. and was able to update the firmware for my cdrom and it still does not work. The tech said this was a trend they were seeing and were working on a solution. guess im going to keep trying cdrom drives

i JUST bought this DVD RW drive and i'm getting the same problem. occasionally, not everytime, i will try and run the game and all i get is a spinning cd rom icon. i have to end the game process with CTRL+ALT+DELETE and then try to run it again.

UPDATE:
Well my laptop ran it just fine, even after quitting/rebooting.
Attept a reinstall next. *sigh*
I did uninstall the demo and the beta on this computer after I played. Perhaps that was it?

My suggestion would be to not run Dawn of War in any kind of cd/dvd rom burner.
Go out and get yourself a cheap dvd drive.

May I suggest something like this. SAMSUNG 16X DVD Drive Black (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=27-151-208&depa=1). I've had 2 of these in my computer for 2 years and never once a problem with anything.

i would like to say that that idea has holes, my laptop has a dvd-r/rw drive in it, and DoW works fine, a small thing you could check is to see if the disk is damaged or dirty in any way, i have had similar problems with other discs when they have fingerprints on them

Well not everone has the same burnable media drive. Wheras writeable drives have been known to have conflicts especially with copy protection. With read-only drives maybe 99% of them out there won't have problems with copy protection.

yes, that is why, in another thread, it was found that a firmware upgrade for the offending hardware helped

CampingCarl, I did precisely what you did, and have the very same problem.

I loaded the game, played the first three missions, escaped out, unloaded the beta version, and now I can't get back in. All I get is the spinning disk =( I have two cd drives, a Sony DR-510, and a Hitachi GC 5000 DVD Rom. Neither drive will run the game.

My system:
Athalon 2600 xp
Windows XP Pro with all upgrades except Service Pack 2
1 gig of ram
radeon 9600 pro (128 meg)
Soyo Dragon KT-400 Platnum MB
2 Western Digital 160 gig drives
Sony DRU 510
Generic Hitachi GC-5000 DVD Rom
Audigy MP3+
Linksys Gigabit Nic card
generic USB 2.0 adapter (PCI)

I'll try to reload the game and post results.

The worst part of this for me is that after fighting to get this laded on a friends machine and continuously getting that Spooge error, we loaded the game on a frsh loaded machine that met none of the minimum specs, and it ran fine....

Make sure you contact THQ about this if you guys can.

Try Ending the DoW Executable, then try to rerun it.
