View Full Version : DoW Crash in Windows Server 2003 (Post game exit) - Updated Possibly Securom Related

I have good news and bad news regarding DoW running on Windows Server 2003.

Good News:
The game runs great. I've been enjoying the carnage. I'm definitely loving the game.

Bad News:
My system crashes unexpectedly (and without any event log traces) AFTER I'm done playing the game. It MIGHT be related to when my system kills the monitor after the screen saver takes over, but to be honest I have yet to actually catch the system crashing... I always seem to pop back right after it has finished rebooting. I'll try to catch it later today after I get home from the office, but here's my system info in case someone happens to know something:

Hardware:
P4 2.4 GHz
1024 MB PC 3200
ABIT BD7-Raid
Soundblaster Live!
GeForce 5600 FX 256MB
Dual Display (2x CRT)
Generic NIC
WD 80 GB 7200rpm w/8MB cache
2x Maxtor 20 GB 7200rpm w/2MB cache
Lite-on 4x DVD Burner
Toshiba 16x DVD Drive
430Watt PSU (Antec Truepower)

Software:
Windows Server 2003
DirectX 9.0c
NVIDIA 61.77 Drivers (Dual display optimizaion is set to "Single Display", the rest of the options are at their defaults)
Whatever the latest SBLive driver package is from Creative's site

Note: This did *NOT* happen with the DoW Demo :)

What detail levels did you have set? Can you try lowering them to the minimum please?

Tempest[Prime]

I'll try that when I get back. (Going out of town on family business.) They're all at the max except for shadows, which I have disabled completely. I must say, the game looks gorgeous... :P

Also, the reboot pattern is somewhat erratic. Sometimes it happens right away, sometimes right in game...

Take last night for example, after the second reboot the game loaded fine. I played for hours, watching in awe as my terminator squads held a couple of passes on one particular map without suffering any casualties. Stopped playing at about 11:45 PM. Checked my mail, hit up a MUD till about 1:15, went to bed. I happened to be half-awake at 3:30 turning over when I saw my pc just drop to a black screen and reboot. (I don't get a BSOD or anything, just a quick snap to black and reboot...) Super weird if you ask me. :)

Could be something else causing it then... hmmmm

Exact same thing happens to me. I have a 5900XT and play meduim-high settings, I don't think I am stressing the GPU. Whenever it crashes the HD gets fragmented, especially THQ files so you should defragment after it crashes.

Oh, mine always crashes in-game.

Do you guys have this problem with any other games? Almost sounds like an overheating issue. Also, are you getting the dreaded BSOD or is it just rebooting?

As I don't have much experience with W2003 I was just looking at some things.

Many games work well with Windows Server 2003, but require special steps be taken to ensure adequate gameplay. You must enable graphics acceleration, enable DirectX, and enable the Windows Audio service.

To enable Direct X, you must first enable graphics acceleration. To do this, right click on the desktop and go to Properties, Settings, Advanced, Troubleshooting, and set the Hardware acceleration bar to Full.

To activate Direct3D and DirectDraw (DirectX), go to Start/Run and type "dxdiag". Click OK. Click on the Display tab, then click on the Enable button for DirectDraw and Direct3d.

The windows audio service needs to be enabled. To enable it:
1>click Start, then Run, and type "services.msc" (without quotes) and click
OK
2>find the "Windows Audio" service (without quotes), right click and select Properties, select
"Automatic" instead of "Disabled" (without quotes) in the startup type box
3>Click Apply.
4>Click Start
5>Click OK.

I'm assuming you guys have done all this?

jeremyj2e

I have taken care of all that, I use Server beacuse I am able to tweak things so I know a lot about it.

I found that defragging helped tremendously, so it way be a fragmentation issue, when the game files get fragmented it may cause crashes.

No BSoD. I don't think its overheating, my GPU never gets close to shutdown temp. The computer litterally just reboots all the sudden when it happens.

I have a suspicion it might have to do with virtual memory...

I'm going to jump out on a limb here and say it's not a heat issue since the temperature levels have not risen above their regular operating averages for the last year and a half or so... It's not a power issue. As a matter of fact, I'm going to go as far as to suggest that the issue is most likely NOT related to malfunctioning hardware in my case. Misconfigured options, some kind of psychotic leak in the game software playing with things in very evil memory locations, or maybe a whacked out driver option (although I've done no tweaks save the one where I knocked the "dual display performance" option from dual display compatibility to single display mode...), but not the hardware directly at this time.

1. No other game does this. The only other game that hits my system this hard that I would think I'd see at least the slightest bit of issues while stessing my system would have been that multi-week binge I had with Doom 3. The system ran fine.

2. The system continues to perform uniformly well before and after stress tests. I set the system on a 24-hour burn in from here (I'm out of town right now), and I still see no reboots.

3. The system only ever pulls these stunts after or while running the full retail version of DoW. The demo (which some people have stated is based off of the full version) gave me no such problems.

Number 3 brings me to my current hypothesis, which I will test as soon as I get back in front of the beast: The only difference ticking in my head in terms of options when running the full version of the game and the demo would probably be the model detail level. I think we had the capability to fiddle with all of the rest of the options (though I'll need to go sink my teeth into it again and make absolute sure of that little detail) in the demo. If this happens to be the case, and just loading higher quality models into the game is driving my system to reboot either during or hours after a play session, then I'd be even more curious as to what exactly is tossing the machine into a panic because... that's just uberweird.

Ok, update time.

I'm still having the same erratic issue. System drops to black, no BSOD, no error messages, and reboots. Sometimes in-game, usually anywhere from minutes to hours after playing. (Rebooting manually stops this process, btw). This only happens with the retail version of the game. The demo works fine :)

BUT, one shouldn't have to reboot before or after playing a game. That's kinda silly :P

Here's what I have tried so far without success. Hopefully this will help someone:

1. My processor was modestly overclocked. Knocked it down to stock frequency and ran the game.
2. Tried lowering all of the detail settings.
3. Upgraded the NVIDIA drivers from 61.77 to 65.73.
4. Noticed I had Daemon Tools installed. Removed them, rebooted. Problem persists.

I still think it's very odd that the demo (based on the full version) plays fine but the full version gives me these problems.

Yeah...I have 2k3 as well, and am getting the BAD_POOL_CALLER error with BSoD randomly when i play the game. It never happens at the same time, indeed it doesn't always happen when I play the game. All my drivers and DirectX are up to date.

As with Tempest, the Demo and Beta worked fine...

Any ideas?

Alright.
I think I have done something that should help narrow this down a whole big bunch lot.

My experiences and methods outlined below are not an attempt to cheat/swindle/whatever Relic or THQ. They are merely for troubleshooting purposes. I paid my $50 for the game, and I still believe that DoW is an awesome game. You'll notice right away why I have a newfound sense of immense frustration, however....

I made a duplicate of Disc 1. Now, I know that the securom protection will cause the game to fail during load, but that's what I was counting on. I ran the game and the disc starts spinning... Spin spin spin... laser laser laser...

"Hey get the copy out of the drive and put back in the real disc, bozo!"

Alright, maybe later. I never launched the game again. Now, if you've been reading so far, you know that my system usually crashes *AFTER* I'm done playing. Well, lo and behold, my system drops to black about 15 minutes later.

So, here we have an interesting twist on my issue...

ONLY ENOUGH OF THE GAME TO GET THE EXE LOADED UP AND DO WHATEVER SECUROM DOES GOT PROCESSED.

So, Relic, THQ, whoever... Theres only so much that coulda happened through that process. I hope that pinpoints it enough for someone to find something. If not, my contact info is in my forum account. I'm sure someone can put you in direct contact with me. I'm more than willing to help do whatever it takes to nail this problem.

IF the securom protection is problem, I'd be more than happy to try an executable with securom removed. I'm not entirely interested in digging up whatever crack whatever scumbag software piracy group has released. I'd rather have something from the developers directly that I can trust.

Like I said, I'm not out to rob the talented people that made this game possible. I just want what I paid for to work like it should, don't you? :)

For anyone that was following this as well as those who may come searching for answers later, here is another update:

My problem seems to be related to the Securom copy protection. I have submitted a support request to THQ concerning the issue.

After I had submitted my request, I had one of those "duh" moments. I had always tried to play the game with the disc in my Lite-On LDW-411S DVD+/-RW. I ran the game a couple of hours ago with the disc in my normal Toshiba DVD drive, and I haven't had any issues yet. I'll let you guys know if the system crashes again within 24 hours.

I don't condone the use of no-cd patches, but I feel like I must at least make the point that the game is working wonderfully for me with the exception of the Securom CD protection.

Thanks to everyone who offered input, and good luck to everyone still sorting out issues.

Special thanks to Überjumper for doing what he does. :)

']She did finally crash. While that does suck, I'm still hopeful that THQ will do something to help us.

Please accept my sincere sympathy. I am getting the same resets. Your machine black screening is a blue screen of death, turn of automatically restart to catch the error.

I do not get this error in any other game except this one, this leads me to beleive itsa driver issue with latest operating systems. I run windows XP service pack2 and i get the same problems. Sometimes resets, sometimes dosent.

Anywhere between 1 minute and 1 hour. This is NOT an overheating error, its a driver/O/S conflict, i have written my comments in another thread entitled (game makes pc reset)).

Please review.

This needs to be resolved my THQ i have e-mailed their support direct

Sure enough, the BSOD error type is BAD POOL CALLER.

I've already gathered enough repeatable results to pin this right on the Securom protection. I'm extremely disappointed, but I'll give them a fair chance to respond. I'd love to get some serious on-line wargaming done, but I doubt I'll get the chance until they either a: fix the protection or (preferrably) b: remove it altogether.

My game crashes pretty consistantly after a match, when I hit "Quit" to look at the stats also. But only after a match.

ÜberJumper

Sounds like the game couldn't write to the directory, another user reported something similar.

Tempest[Prime]
3rd Oct 04, 10:25 PM
There goes the whole notion of subtlety and gentility in the thread... At least it wasn't me! :P

Yes, it does indeed solve the problem, but without the executable being official, it is far from being a permanent fix... Especially if a future patch comes out down the road and messes up multiplayer compatibility. I'll let you know what THQ says, assuming they actually do say something... :D

Tempest[Prime]
4th Oct 04, 5:08 PM
Words alone cannot express my frustration after having read this. Maybe I didn't make the problem clear enough... It was probably a mistake to reference the forums. I won't get into the whole support rant, but I thought you guys might at least find this amusing. I find it irritating, and I think they're missing out on an opportunity to correct an issue that affects more than just me.

I'm sorry but this game is not supported in the operating system that you are currently using. You must have one of the operating system listed on the box in order to run the game properly.
Thank you.

Problem:
Dawn of War causes my PC to reset. (Server 2003) It usually happens AFTER
the game has been exited. Traced it down to the Securom copy protection by
making a duplicate of the cd (which would cause the game to fail to
launch) and launching the game. The game did not run, and I used my PC
normally. The system crashed within 15 minutes.
A full outline of what I've done so far and background on the problem in
