View Full Version : Major Question regarding the Emperor

I read up on the mythos regarding the emperor and I'm a little confused. I know the details regarding his life and death and the horus heresy, but I don't understand whats up with him NOW. He was mortally wounded and they placed him into the mortal throne to sustain him. I believe he sustains himself on the souls of psykers not powerful enough to protect their minds from being beacons to chaos. But anyway, is he still alive and sentient, or is he just a machine now that sends out the warp beacons from which all space ships navigate the warp? Does the emperor actually give any sort of orders ever? It almost seems like he doesnt even exist anymore and hasnt for a long time. He's just an excuse for government agencies to get away with anything, claiming this or that in the name of the emperor. You never hear of the emperor actually SAYING this or mandating this, its always officials who've been given authority in the name of the emperor who are acting. Could anyone fill me in?

Well, you seem to know pretty much everything there is to know. Imperial propaganda has it that he's "ascended to a higher plane" and can no longer communicate with lowly mortals. Apparently the truth is that his mind/soul still exists, and the golden throne and the souls of psychers sustain it. There's a whole thing about how the Emperor's soul is hiding in the warp from the chaos gods, who continue to hunt for him. That's where the sensei come in....
The only proof that the Emperor is alive is that he continues to broadcast the astronicom, the psychic beacon need to navigate the warp. Of course it could just be that the golden throne itself broadcasts the astronicom, and the psykers power it....but that's a bit too cynical even for 40k.

You pretty much have it nailed. The Emperor is like a living god that the Church can use as a medium for exerting their power.

Which to believe some think the emperor's soul is in the warp fighting the chaos gods to a stand still other that he is died and nothing more.

Our Glorious Emperor is merely considering his next move.
The forces of Chaos know this...it is part of the reason for their disorganisation. They know that should any real threat emerge to the Imperium, He would rise from his throne.
Pray, oh servants of treachery and betrayal, that none of you ever gains enough sway over your other fallen brethren to raise an army worthy of His notice, for if you invoke The Emperor's wrath, he will sweep you all from existance with a stroke of light so pure and so holy it will be as if you never existed.
Not even ash shall remain of you.
Until then, the bolters of the loyal Space Marines shall keep you cowed.
Bow your heads, chaos dog-minions.

Thats pretty damn convenient. Oh yeah, he's just waiting until a real threat emerges. As if the orks, chaos, and eldar arent threat enough to warrant his attention. No, I'm thinking more and more that he doesn't exist anymore.

the emperor is busy playing chess with chaos gods, he is just pretending to be dead, he could awake any time he wants, it is just a very long chess game.

I don't think a chess game could go on that long. There's only so many pieces.....
My guess is that they're playing Snakes and Ladders.

Well put it this way, if Khorne threw a tantrum over a game it wouldn't stop at smashing the pieces... :smash:

As I understand it, having read about it on Critical Hit, the Emperor's wounds from battling Horus were grevious...and mortal. The purpose of the Golden Throne was to sustain him for as long as possible and even allow some communication after his life functions had ceased. However, 10000 years before the current era his mind finally slipped from his body and into the warp. He now is busy dodging the Chaos Gods until the time of his rebirth some undefined period time in the future.

Read the new Witch Hunter Codex. It gives a hint that the Emperor still has some omnipotent effect on the world. The Adeptus Custodes (Emperor's Praetorian Guard), took the founders of the Sisters of Battle before the Golden Throne where the Emperor is encased, and when they left the Throne, they became terribly aware of the treachery that had befallen them and the Imperium.

You guys should read a small story on one of the first few pages of the Inquisitor rulebook. it shows a discussion between several figures (maybe future High Lords?) in the aftermath of the Horus Heresy. According to them the Emperor CAN be brought back to full life, but such a thing could tear the Imperium apart. It is already worshiping him as a god and bringing him back could start another civil war, so they decide (though not unanimously) to leave him as he is, as a figurehead. Thus the Inquisition was founded to keep the faith in Him strong.
Incidentaly, I personally believe that the Astronomican is indeed a psychic beacon taking the Emperor's place, and that the psykers just power it. After all, why would he need SO many souls every day just to sustain him?
