View Full Version : Please Help - Chaos Won't Work

Lord Proteus
24th Sep 04, 1:47 PM
Please help me, I finally got the game and installed it, but for some reason whenever I try to start a game it freezes halfway through loading proccess.

What the hell could possibly be causing this? the demo worked perfectly... please help... -_-

Okay I just checked the Dawn of War directories in the C Drive, and it turns out thier are no files in the Data Folders in the Graphics and Engine Folders. Is that normal? I also tried reinstaling, but i encountered an error trying to unistall.

PS - Yes I know I allready started this thread in the wrong forum, but please forgive me, im desperate, I've been looking forward to playing this game for ages and the fact I've spent so long(4+ hours) trying to make it work, my spirit is being crushed... -_-

I tried uninstalling the game, but it got interupted and cancelled, will that have had any other damaging effects on the game? Thier doesnt seem to be any files in any of the Data folders, and it wont let me reinstall, so im stumped...

EDIT - ok, I've been trying to fix this for like 4-5 hours, but nothing. I tried uninstalling, becouse I noticed all the data files are missing, but it wouldnt let me uninstall. If I were to manually delete all the files in the Dawn of War Directory, would I be allowed to install the game again?

Install the latest Forceware drivers from nVidia, you've got the 44.03s.

Even though you may manually uninstall the game do not forget about the registry keys. Do a quick search and remove all references to the game and Relic - assuming you have no other Relic software installed. Did you install over the Demo or try to use saved games from the Demo. I've had this problem with Morrowind when I've un/installed after patching. Formating is quite extreme if you have other stuff on your 'puter - but if it's only for games well go for it. Make sure you didn't have any security software running during install - that goes for any game/software - like AV, firewall, Trojan cleaner etc. Are you using XP? If so, and your using Nvidia graphics, use the ones supplied with XP first an' see how you go. I'm running a Radeon 9800 Pro with the latest catalyst drivers and everything's a.o.k. - but then again this is the demo. HTH

No, I did not install over the demo, and I am not using any saved games from the demo. Earlier today I found out tha I was able to play the first mission of the single player campaign without any trouble, it's just the skirmish games that wont play.

and yes, I have XP. and what do you mean by "use the ones supplied with XP first an' see how you go"?

Uninstall the game again, then re-install it.

Then go to www.nvidia.com and download and install the latest drivers for your video card BEFORE YOU TRY TO PLAY.

Lord Proteus

Its apparent to me that you guys dont pay attention, I have said countless times that I am unable to uninstall the game...

EDIT - Okay, every race works fine except for Chaos, whenever they are included in a Skirmish game(and probably campaign too) the game freezes during loading and I have to restart the computer. I installed those drives but I got a message halfway through the instellation I recieved a message saying the drives were untested for XP or something, but I installed anyway.

So, any suggestions? Chaos are my fave so its a shame I cant use them... -_-

Lord Proteus

Whenever Chaos is involved in a Skirmish or The Campaign, the game crashes at the Loading menu. What is up with that?

You're probably running out of memory as you only have 256mb (and 565mb swap) and are trying to play a 6P game - you'll notice that the box says anything > 4P requires 512mb (iirc at least, I don't have a box handy). Increasing the page file size to 1gb may help.

The game will throw them away and use nothing -- it won't crash in this case. Or at least it better not :)

Also, you are not using the "fullteamcolours" setting right? The message about a 256MB video card and 1GB system RAM is really quite understated.

Also, you can try turning team colours off for your opponents (it's a switch per opponent). This will use a lot less RAM, and that may be enough to help. Of course your opponents won't be happy playing against you as your system will likely page and cause a lot of LAG. The best solution would be to upgrade your system RAM for more than 2on2 games.

Low memory? Doubtful, the game works fine with the other races, and I've even played a 3v3 game with everyone as Orks on that one level where everyone starts with a relic next to thier base with one Critical Location in the centre of the map, I tell you, its total madness fighting over that Critical Location with 6 Squiggoths duking it out while all hell breaks loose all around you >_< if u dont believe me I could show u the pics of said battle :p

8 player maps work smoothly aswell...

but how do I increase the page file size?

ÜberJumper
1st Oct 04, 1:07 PM
If the Relic devs are telling you that 256 MB is not enough to run the game in 3v3 or higher multiplayer games, then I suggest you listen to them. That being said, part of your install may be corrupt (fittingly the chaos bits), so you may want to try to re-install.

Also, it won't fix anything, but install the 1.01 patch as well.

Page file size is in the systems icon in control panel, under Advanced>Performance>Settings.

Lord Proteus
1st Oct 04, 1:51 PM
I presume they were talking about multiplayer games? funny, I never mentioned multiplayer games, I mentioned camaign and skirmish...

I can handle 3v3 and even 4v4 with relative ease...

Same deal though, as the custom skins take up more memory.

the game has worked fine with all the other races, with custom badges & banners, with team colours... except Chaos wont work... EVERYTHING WORKS EXCEPT CHAOS.

ok, find your dawn of war directory, and delete it (keep your profiles if you like) then re-install the game.

Lord Proteus
1st Oct 04, 2:18 PM
are you sure that will work? I remember doing the same thing before with another game, all the stuff was deleted, but my computer still believed some phantom ghost program still existed on my comp, and it would not let me install it again becouse it thought it was allready installed...

ÜberJumper
1st Oct 04, 2:20 PM
Try this then, rename the directory (\Dawn of War BACKUP\) then try to install again.

Lord Proteus
1st Oct 04, 2:21 PM
uhm, ok, that sounds... new...

EDIT: wait, im not sure how this is supposed to work. I mean, once the game is installed, the games installed, right? deleting the directory wont remove the game from my computers installed software, it never does.

BTW, do u mean rename the THQ folder or the Dawn of War Folder inside it?

ÜberJumper
1st Oct 04, 2:27 PM
When you install software, it usually copies the program files to a specific directory. In this case, c:\program files\THQ\Dawn of War\.

Now if you can't uninstall it, you should be able to run the installer again and "repair" the installation (or just reinstall it to a new directory)

What that will do is simply recopy the missing files into the directory. From there, you should be good to go.

What I would do:
Just delete the Dawn of war directory.
And then open/explore CD1. then run setup.exe (dont try from the autorun)

Games won't always recon that the game-dir have been deleted since its not looking for the directory, but the reg-info that won't be deleted with a simple delete-dir.. So the autorun will
think its still installed.

soooo.. run the setup from the cd.

(sorry for the bad english, kinda tired atm -_-zZz)

YAY! Success! ^.^

I luv you! :D

im going to place my custom banners/badges from the original directory(which was renamed) into the new one, but I dont think that will cause any problems...

again, thankyou.
