Being the saviours of mankind must be a pretty demanding job, so when they are not exterminating alien races what do SM do to unwind and relax. After unstrapping the armour is off down the bolter range for some practice, is it a gruelling physical workout to keep themselves in shape or is it off down the moviehall with the rest of there genetically modified buddies for the latest Hugh Grant romantic comedy.

If anyone can enlighten me that would be very much appreciated :bandit:

dude, they're religious fanatics who pledged their lives to service of the emperor. I doubt they're like Guard, who play cards and stuff - they probably just train.

I remeber this one post were a SM schedule is basicly like this

1:00AM-9:45PM: Various training

9:45PM-10:00pm: free time

10:PM-12:00AM: sleep

Ennui
24th Sep 04, 4:50 PM
lol 15 minutes of free time

I remember reading about this a few days back on the GW UK site.

Space Marine Daily Rituals (http://uk.games-workshop.com/40kuniverse/warhammer40k/spacemarines/dailyrituals.htm)

Yeh, they get 15 minuteds free time a day which they seem to just use composing litanies to their primarachs and suchlike. They do however get a whole four hours sleep. Lucky-duckies

Piccolo

not all space marines get that 15 minutes, some chapters view it as wasteful and so don't allow it.

Dimension
24th Sep 04, 7:13 PM
also, the 4 hours are merely a safeguard. marines can do without sleep, but in time they sometimes grow a bit mad and edgy. they sleep to rest their minds, not because they are really tired.

25th Sep 04, 2:01 AM
I remember reading that they're adviced to spend those 15 mins on reflection of the gravity of their responsibility to the imperium and the emperor.

What do Space Marines do in their spare time?
Two words:

Lawn Darts!

Coey
25th Sep 04, 4:00 AM
Wolves don't, it's more like a bit of training n the morning and then off to do what ever you want.

xenos182
25th Sep 04, 5:55 AM
wolves are generally different to most chapters, they always drink and have many feasts. also if not on specific duties when on fenris they are allowed to go out into the wilderness to pratice and train

at least chaos have real gods that can maifest themselves, all sm have is a rotting corpse on a chair

Jack Soloman
25th Sep 04, 2:06 PM
I know chaos demons can manifest themselves, but can the gods themselves do so?

Coey

The God will need an extremely fucking powerfull vessal to survive more than 3 miliseconds.

Jack Soloman

Haven't daemon princes been summoned into bodies, though? And haven't greater daemons just walked out of holes in reality (like miniature Eyes of Terror). I remember that happeneing in the Daemonifuge comic.

greater daemons have to take possesion of a living body

Coey
25th Sep 04, 5:23 PM
Greater Deamons and Deamon Princes are only a tiny fraction of the true power of the Chaos Gods. Nothing is powerfull enough for them to posses and not be instantly destroyed.

SlowFocusGuy
25th Sep 04, 6:22 PM
Lets say the impossible happened and the Emperor was possesed.....what would come out?

Yo-jim-bo
25th Sep 04, 8:00 PM
They *sort of* possessed Horus-channelled a lot of power into him, and befuddled him enough to do their bidding. Not full on possession by any means, but enough to enable him to throw the Emperor around like a rag doll.
As for if the Emperor was possesed....assuming he was weakened somehow so it would work....I guess we might end up with something like the C'tan, except even better, a god in a mortal shell.
Speaking of the C'tan, wouldn't it be (theoreticly) possible to construct a daemon engine capable of housing a choas god (temporarily at least) It'd have to be bigger than a spacehulk, but still. I like the idea of slanneesh riding around in a death star. Or better yet, a Blackstone fortress. Or better yet, the Golden Throne. Now THAT would be interesting.

No Surrender
25th Sep 04, 8:34 PM
The Golden Throne just keeps the Emperor alive, nothing more. Anyway, back on topic. Space Marines probably do something incredibly boring in their spare 15 minutes.

Voyager

Ran into this on the Games Workshop site:

http://us.games-workshop.com/games/40k/spacemarines/extras/dailyrituals/dailyrituals.htm

That is what Space Marines do during a normal day, it seems.

I would guess that the blood angels have more free time to perform their various artistic practices, while the Ultramarines are the more militarily structured of the chapters so I would guess they have little free time.

I'm guessing its a mix of prayer and relaxing but it probably differs chapter to chapter

You have heard this of the Flesh Tearers too?

Yes, all too many reports of their impending fall have reached my ears. Once more I ask all loyal Commanders to send a detachment to Lyris Signa to form a small crusade to deal with these madmen.

It is better to burn a thousand innocents than to allow one heretic to live.

1-5 Minutes - take off power armor
6-10 Minutes - take a break where even the emperor walks (used to, that is) cherishing the act in free air
11-15 Minutes - suit up again.

They probably shower or do laundry or something.

Gameboy? My last post wasnt serious by the way, though in some cases is most likely true. These guys no nothing other than war and battle, its what they're MADE for.

No Surrender: Do the laundry? Haha, i can see it now - "Whats with those heretics? Always spraying their blood all over us - and its so damn hard to get off too!".

lol.. you're a messed up dude :p

according to most of the fluff, of course, all the SMs would do in their free time would be about the same as they do all the rest of the day.. train for battle, think about battle, make sure the weapons are ready for battle..

but personally I find it very hard to believe *everything* the fluff says could possibly true, so I see no harm in a little imagination.. just don't try to tell the Inquisitor that I mentioned anything about SMs *not* spending all their time in the formerly mentioned pursuits :p

My money goes on praying all those fifteen minutes away.

The Collector

The Inquisitor article on using space marines notes:

"Space Marines don't have days off. They don't go shopping, or mingle with others outside of their own organisation."

So we can narrow it down to just sitting in the Chapel-Barracks. Cleaning weapons complete, they probably socialize. That is legal, Marines call each other "Brother" after all, a product of their organisation and long lives.

If anything, it would be easier if they did that suspended animation thing they do with Eversor Assassins. You put them in a battle barge, into animation they go until the next war, pop them out and away they go! Then back into the battle-barge and so on. Stops for recruiting, with only the Tenth Company using the facilities to train. I fail to see why they must be awake all the time. But that's off topic.

That fifteen minutes is probably regular socializing. We know that it isn't illegal to consume alcohol (the Space Wolves do it, but then again, they're pretty non-Ultramarine.) They have no fear, so they can't talk about what goes bump in the night. Ghost stories are out and they maintain their weapons during the day and already pray three times a day. Maybe they should label those fifteen minutes Siesta or "decompression time".

ShadowFox
1st Oct 04, 9:00 PM
I am pretty sure that a marines body neutralizes alcohol very effectively. :D

FerociousBeast

I have it on authority that during their free time, Space Marines practice up on their strategy with the TT game.

The Collector
1st Oct 04, 9:27 PM
Ah yes, so that any initiate of the Space Marines is easily worth ten Guardsmen or one Imperial Guard officer?

xenos182
2nd Oct 04, 10:54 AM
marines are wrong in the TT game for the sake of balance you need to seriously increase there stats for them to be as strong as they truly are. as for marines space wolves put a special root in there beer which stops there glands that neutralising alcohol from working properly so they can get drunk.

Kaoslord
2nd Oct 04, 9:05 PM
Of course if they were smart little Space Marines, they'd go and grab 15 minutes more sleep. There's a reason it's just before bedtime...

No Surrender: Do the laundry? Haha, i can see it now - "Whats with those heretics? Always spraying their blood all over us - and its so damn hard to get off too!".

When I read that I saw in my mind a space marine trying to shove all his armour into the washing machine.

In my opinion, Space Marines rarely get the oppurtunity to 'train' for battle, they are mostly in battle. But when they're not in battle, i like to think they just relax, put their feet up and enjoy life, maybe get a few girls round to the barracks, throw a party with the other lads.

Crasster
3rd Oct 04, 8:14 PM
If by get a few girls and throw a party you mean pray to the emperor and train, then yes.

SlowFocusGuy
3rd Oct 04, 8:15 PM
Well the 'fun' that Space Marines have (after reading a few book) is

1. Praying
2. Reading about the imperium
3. Training
or
4. Having dagger duels with one another with their terminator armour at stake.

dlood
4th Oct 04, 1:00 PM
Well, the Imperial Fists usually take their free time to carve small statuettes out of the bones of the fists of their fallen comrades.

Expo_Appopi

At the campsite, late at night, the sergeant tells tales of the surrounding area.

Sergeant: "...they wail like Eldar as he rends their living souls from their stiff, fearstricken bodies. And they say his tormented apparition still haunts these hills to this very day."

Space Marine : "So you're saying we should bring flamers?"

Ardias
30th Oct 04, 8:44 PM
Sergeant: "Aye bring the blessed promethium...Hicks! How many times do I have to tell you NOT to put your ammo into the fire. We ain't using flashlights! Our shit blows up and actually does damage!"

Inquisition
30th Oct 04, 9:03 PM
Its stated in the codex astares that a space marine should get free time every day to colect his thoughts and learn from that days experiance. In the index astares it shows a space marine day plan.. trust me.. you cant call this free time. THEY GOT NONE!... 15 min a day before the evening prayer is all..

Ofcourse there are exceptions like the ever drinking jolly space wolves. (from Lone wolves comic series in wh monthly comic) But most chapters concider alcohol a bad thing since it takes the mind of the troubles.

Beebop
30th Oct 04, 9:10 PM
marines can do without sleep, but in time they sometimes grow a bit mad and edgy.

u think it could be that this happend to horus...didnt go to sleep b/c he was in a bind on some back water planet, got no sleep, gets a little ku-ku and then got easily swayed to chaos?

Thousand_Guns
30th Oct 04, 11:53 PM
It would seem anticlamatic to have sleep deprivation be the cause of the Horus Heresy, wouldn't it?

Yggdrasil
31st Oct 04, 1:02 AM
I think Salamanders are the only Space Marines that have day jobs.

Seriously, when they're off duty they work as smiths and community leaders on their home planet. Of course, the Salamanders are also one of the few chapters that regularaly respond to distress calls all over Segmentum Solar and Obscuras, so the amount of down time they get is questionable.

Ardias
31st Oct 04, 9:48 AM
Lack of sleep lol. OMG its so true though, I mean hell why not? Horus doesn't get any sleep, gets edgy, chaos gods say "we'll let you sleep for the rest of eternity if you go and turn traitor" Horus stops playing with himself and goes and turns traitor. The end.

Coey
31st Oct 04, 10:34 AM
Which is quite true, he is sleeping for eternity.

Yggdrasil

Ardias

What he really be tortured and all that stuff, his soul that is? Never actually thought about that. He didn't fail completely, he did beat the living shit out of the imperium, they still havn't recover and quit probably never will. He also did a number on the emperor, so he might not actually be suffering but be enjoying the pleasures of slannesh :p
