Ok, so I install dawn of war set it up ect ect. All is well. I start the game up and right away I noticed something odd. The sound was choppy and stuttering(causing the cinematic to skip a little here and there)... I wondered what was up. I thought I must have had set the config wrong after installation. Not the case. The sound problems were really bad. I had never had an issue like this with any other game i ever owned so i decided to see if it was just Dawn of war. I loaded up homeworld 2 my most demanding game next to dawn of war.

THE SAME THING WAS HAPPENING. The sound was just like in dow. The funny thing is it was never like this before I installed dawn of war. I quit homeworld to go to fiddle with dow some more...and guess what? When I try to start it it says "cannot initialize video card". Now im like WTF and a little ticked off. Ok so video card wont initialize and my sound is fuked up...fine ill open homeworld again and see if it will run. It does but the graphics are shot to hell. There are white shapes all over the place, crazy looking anomalies, parts of the map/ships missing, and UNBELIEVABLE LAG. All of this Alongside the audio stuttering which was now ten times worse than to begin with.

What has DoW done to my computer? Im about to try warcraft 3 and see how bad it really is.

Well, the first thing I'd suggest would be to try uninstalling DoW and re-installing it... new drivers for your video / sound cards might be in order, too.

More likely that he's uninstalled his motherboard drivers, or somehow rolled back to old video card drivers.

Post your warnings.log file and dxdiag.txt please.

First of all i never touched any drivers of any kind.

EDIT: My soundcard has the latest driver and im downloading catalyst 4.7 for my radeon 9800 pro.

Maybe you just got unlucky and your comp and stuff decided to screw you over the day you install DoW. TWICE has a video card fried on me.

The warnings log file is located, by default installation in

c:\program files\thq\Dawn of War\

You can run DXDiag by

start>Run... type DXDIAG and hit enter. Click Save All Information. Open the file, and copy and paste it.

Yes i did reboot...And about catalyst 4.9... Im on windows 98 and the driver updates for that only go up to 4.7 on the ATI website.

IcecreamLtDan
25th Sep 04, 1:04 AM
You can use the 4.9's.

The latest version of the CATALYST™ software suite is designed to support the following Microsoft Windows platforms:

Windows XP
Windows 2000
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: As of January 1, 2004, Microsoft no longer accepted certification submissions for the Microsoft® Windows® Millennium Edition operating system. The ATI CATALYST™ CREW however is committed to all its customers and is now providing non certified WHQL software drivers for users of the Windows Millennium Edition operating system. Windows Millennium Edition users can obtain the software driver at: http://www.atitech.com/support/driver.html. Windows 98/98SE is supported through the ME driver.

Sounds very similar to overheating problems, but I cant think of any ways DOW and not other games could have caused something like that.

IcecreamLtDan; no, you can't use Catalyst 4.9 with Windows 98/98SE, or Windows ME. do you have either of those Operating Systems, have you actually tried this yourself? *I* do, and i have tried it. untill late July 2004, the highest Catalyst for those two systems was 4.3, while Windows 2000 and XP both received updates beyond that point. in July, ATI released Catalyst 4.7 for 98/98SE/ME. attempting to install Catalyst 4.9 (or any version higher than 4.3 other than the new 4.7 release) on a Windows 98/98SE/ME system will only result in failure. yes, ATI is continuing to support MS products prior to 2000 and XP, but NOT with the current level of Catalyst drivers. you can read about this on their own website, where they specifically say which versions of Catalyst work with which versions of Windows.

and for some of us, the lower drivers are the only available route. i run Windows 98 Second Edition on this machine because it is required for some of the things i do. this system has a Radeon 9200, and for some reason, any version of Catalyst other than 4.2 will not install on this machine. i've tried 4.1, 4.3, and the new 4.7, all have failed. as soon as i reboot after the installer finishes, i get a Fatal Exception 0D error, have to reboot to safe mode, and remove the newly installed Catalyst software. 4.0 and lower, and 4.2 are the only versions which do not do this.

i have, however, installed the latest Via 4in1 Hyperion drivers, DirectX 9.0c, Catalyst 4.2, and the latest drivers for my soundcard. Dawn Of War Beta and Demo both installed flawlessly and ran flawlessly. the full version Dawn Of War installed without a problem, but now errors out when i try to run it. i have yet to see the game run on this machine. Athlon XP 1900+, 512mb RAM, Radeon 9200. the error message i get is "runtime error, abnormal program termination". i only get the error if i run the program in windowed mode. in full screen, it just sits there after it errors out, black screen with the mouse pointer, untill i reset the machine. i had to try running it in windowed mode just to get the error message in the first place.

i was able to install it and run it on another machine here, a Windows 2000 Professional system, Athlon Thunderbird 1.3GHz, 512mb RAM, GeForce4 440MX. at first it had the white blocks instead of text, which i was able to overcome by alt-tabbing out and back into the game again, though even with that the mini-map was blank. installing nVidia's 61.77 drivers corrected both problems and now the game runs more or less perfectly on that machine at medium settings.

why won't it run on this machine? especially when both the beta and the demo worked without a hitch. this is the one i got it for. *that* machine isn't even properly mine. is there a solution for the runtime error?

There was no change between rendering engines for the Demo to the Retail version.

You will need to get the latest catalysts for your system to play Dawn of War. I suspect you have other issues with your computer if you're getting crashes simply installing anything past Catalyst 4.2. I suggest you sort your system out.

IsaLander, no I do not use windows 98 and I am not using an ATI card. The information I posted in the above post came directly from ATI's website. If you are unable to use any drivers other that the catalyst 4.2 then I would suggest you concentrate your troubleshooting to that problem first.

Ok... great... Not long after I posted this my sound went from screwed up to non-existant. The sound card wouldnt initialize PERIOD. So looking in more..how can i put it... helpful places I discovered that DoWs directX was some how bugged royaly, and had totaly trashed my sound. I downloaded a new direct x from microsoft and now I have sound again in windows, but in games I get the same stuttering/skipping/lag BS. The graphics... well are fuked to high hell even with catalyst 4.7. Pretty much every recent game with demanding technical aspects freezes/has anomolies when i try to play. funny how within ten minutes of installing dawn of war my computer goes to hell. I Can't even load a single homeworld mission anymore which used to run as smooth as is possible.

Thnaks relic for releasing an extremely buggy game! Now i get to pay 80 damn dollars to get it fixed! HAAHAH GOOD FKING JOB!

DoW = returned.

At least the cash back will help pay for the repairs.

Yes and supposedly that was what caused my sound to eventualy cease altogether. I dont know if its responsible for any of the other problems though.

Before you go blaming relic, do you actually take care of your PC like a normal computer people. Or do you just slap shit on and off it and hope it works. Because I know for a fact that just installing directx 9.0c would not screw up the rest of your computer THAT much. They test the programs they put on the master CD before making the copies incase a bad file transfer to the master occured.

So that leads me to believe your computer was in unstable or near shitty software environment condition before DoW was installed. After you did install DoW, your system drivers probably got borked past what they were as you probably don't know how to properly install/uninstall drivers or other things for that matter. So when you put on DX9 and catalyst 4.9, your system just got screwed with driver conflicts and whatnot. Seeing how windows 98 sucks enough as it does with drivers, you were just asking for trouble. And as you immediately blame Dawn of War for your computer issues, have you not noticed why has no one else had similar issues with Dawn of War destroying their systems, hm? Most likely because they maintain the overall system stability of their systems. If your are not computer saavy then it's not really your fault, but you should at least learn up on how to properly install drivers and such and for god sake get rid of 98 and get XP.

IF you so happen to be a computer geek. Shame on you.

sure, you quoted a small portion of what ATI has on their website. you did not, however, quote the part that specifically says that Windows ME and earlier is NOT SUPPORTED with Catalyst versions later than 4.3 except for the July 2004 release of version 4.7. note that currently the newest Catalyst for Windows 2000 and XP is version 4.9.

neither i nor ATI have been able to determine what the conflict is, as to why the later Catalyst drivers specifically for WinME/98/98SE will not work correctly. the newer drivers should work, but they will not. i *am* still working on that problem, however it's not the root cause of the problem with *this* game. i can install the Beta and the Demo and run both without trouble. i have absolutely no complaints with either of those running on the current system.

though, to be honest, saying the newer Catalyst drivers don't install properly isn't quite right. they install fine. no errors, the installer compleats and tells me i have to reboot. when the system reloads, as soon as it starts loading the display drivers, i get "Fatal Exception 0D at 0287:00001447". every time. i've had ATI on the phone with their Tier 3 tech support trying to sort this out on several different occasions, and they don't know either.

but, on a more positive note... i have been doing some tinkering with the different installs, comparing files and switching components around to see what works with what. if i put the Demo w40k.exe in the retail install directory, the game loads and runs fine. if i put the Beta w40k.exe in the retail game, it will not load and errors out with a different error from the retail w40k.exe. using the Demo executable leaves me with a "$2701 No Key" error when i try to enter multiplayer, but everything else is working correctly now. i can play the game, i just can't play multiplayer. with a little more time and tinkering, i bet i can sort out the No Key error, as well. just takes time and effort, i have plenty of both.

so, i'll go off and play the campaign and maybe some skirmishes, and deal with the multiplayer issue another time. and i will be playing it with Catalyst 4.2 drivers installed, despite your opinion that 4.2 isn't new enough. several other folks i've spoken with think it might be a problem with the Securom implementation, and the more i work with it, the more i tend to agree with that theory.

Incase you missed it, I sent you a PM.

yup, i missed it. must have been during one of the many system crashes i've experienced trying to work this out. i'll go have a look now. thanks.

actually, i'm getting kind of used to it. i screw something up, the game fails to load, the system crashes, i have to hit the reset button... then it decides to run the registry scanner at reboot, tells me to restart... runs the registry scanner again and tells me to restart again... and then maybe it'll re-load Windows (unless it decides to scan the registry a third or fourth time, which has actually happened). then once i'm in, i can do something stupid and crash the system again. and repeat the cycle ad infinitum ad nauseum. <sigh>

No im not computer savvy. At all-what so ever-by any means.
I just play the games. Im not a gomputer geek. I only know the most basic things about a computer. More ram = better. Faster processer = better. Thats about it.... Heh. Its probably the reason im so panicky over this. For all in know its a simple problem but i have no understanding of it or how to fix it.

If one of you guys had your hands on my computer it wouldnt suprise me if you could have everything in working order in no time.

All i know is Homeworld used to run great. Now it does not.
The sound used to work fine. Now it does not.

In my fiddling around i have found that the only two games with any real problems are Homeworld 2 and dawn of war. Warcraft 3 runs the same as always after i downloaded directx c and catalyst 9.7. So does Arcanum, Baldurs Gate 1&II.. and every other game ive tried. Homeworld 2 will freeze up if i tried to load a mission. The sound in homeworld 2 stutters just like it does in dawn of war. This didnt happen a few days ago. In my other games there are no problems anymore sound or graphical.

Is there something wrong with my sound cards drivers? If there is why then do the other games work? also ive tinkered enough that dawn of wars graphics are fine now. They can run on the highest setting without problems...but the sound skips and stutters still.

Whats the deal? How come the only problems lie with dawn of war and homeworld 2....both relic games.

for those 2 games what are you setting your audio options as?

IsaLandr
26th Sep 04, 1:14 AM
thanks to all of you for your valuable input. the problem has been solved by one of the kind souls here in these forums.

as we had suspected before, the problem was indeed an issue with the implementation of Securom, and not anything to do with my older Catalyst 4.2 drivers. 4.2 are still installed, and everything is fine.

one of the other members sent me a link for the w40k.exe file with Securom disabled, and the game now loads and plays flawlessly. including full multiplayer support, for which i will be eternally grateful. everything works, i've even got all the settings except shadows turned up to the maximum, and it plays absolutely great. i'm a satisfied customer. now that it works properly, i can say it's money well spent. not real happy with the implementation of Securom, but as long as i can work around it, i won't complain. the game runs well.

thanks again to everybody who chimed in. and for those still experiencing the problem, give me a holler in PM and i'll share the solution. i'm not sure it's technically legal (some say it is, some say it's not, i don't want to get embroiled in that debate), so i don't want to put it up here where somebody (including me or the person i got it from) might get in trouble for it.

FatalTheRabbit

for those 2 games what are you setting your audio options as?

I've tried all the different settinsg on dawn of war. As for homeworld 2 it shouldn't matter. Prior to DoW's installation there were no problems of any kind with home world. Im sort of wondering if the culprit isn't the new sound card drivers that I installed recently... maybe dow and hw2 have issues with that particular driver set.

I have the Creative Sound Blaster PCI 128 and its latest
drivers.
