i get that exact same error. it's driving me up a wall. click the icon, screen blanks, i see the arrow cursor/pointer... then i get my error sound, cursor changes back to my standard desktop pointer which i can move around the screen, but screen stays black. and at this point i cannot alt-tab out, ctrl-alt-del, nothing works. i have to hard-reset the system.

the cursor returning to my desktop pointer only does so in the centre area of the screen, which indicates that i'm getting an error message of some kind, that i can't see. i tried changing the video settings to "windowed" mode, and sure enough, i get the same error message. runtime error, abnormal program terminaltion.

10:02:11.7 GAME -- Beginning FE

note that it fails right before loading the intro videos. i have installed this game on another machine here, Windows 2000 Professional on a 1.3GHz Athlon/512mb/GeForce4 440MX, and it runs quite well. in the warnings.log file from that machine, the next line after "GAME -- Beginning FE" is where it lists loading and the unloading the intro videos. that's where mine is failing. this leads me to suspect there is a problem with the videos. as to what that problem might be... anybody's guess is better than mine.

i also do not have any issues with any other games or other products that i have. this is the first time i've run into this, and it's only with this game. both the beta and the demo worked without a problem. the demo uses the same intro videos, so i really don't have a clue what the problem might be.

agreed, Deschav. after disabling secondary output, i still get the error. i dropped my BIOS AGP Aperture setting from 128 to 64, and that didn't help either.

i tried to re-install the demo, but i got an error near the end of the install process and then it deleted everything it had done up to that point. it was the samy "data1.cab is missing or corrupt" error that i've seen some others have.

at this point i really don't know what else to try.

IsaLandr: Try updating your display drivers with the latest from http://www.ati.com - the ones you're running are very very old.

Deschav: Have you tried uninstalling, defragging, doing a full bad sector scan of the hard drive, and reinstalling? Also do a full memory test with this program: http://www.memtest86.com

Nutter, the latest drivers from ATI do not work with Windows 98, 98SE, or Windows ME (they cause general protection faults and fatal exceptions when they load as Windows boots). ATI has that information posted on their site, warning 98/98SE/ME users not to try to use them. i *have* tried to use them, and i get the exact errors they said i would get. i am running Windows 98 SE. the latest Catalyst drivers for Windows 2000 and XP are 4.9, where the latest for Windows 98/98SE/ME were 4.3 untill recently. ATI released a version of Catalyst 4.7 for Windows ME (which includes 98/98SE compatibility) at the end of July of 2004. those drivers fail to install in my system. i get the same errors with 4.7 for ME as i get with Catalyst 4.6, 4.7, 4.8, and 4.9 versions for 2000/XP, and i also get those same errors with Catalyst 4.3 for 98/98SE/ME, too.

for whatever reason, and even ATI can't tell me why it's happening, i've had their tier 3 tech people on the phone for hours trying to troubleshoot the problem, my system will not accept anything higher than Catalyst 4.2, that's just the way it is. i've had *zero* problems running any other games or applications with my current drivers. the Dawn Of War Beta and Demo both installed and ran perfectly on my system with Catalyst 4.2, so i really don't think it's those Catalyst drivers.

it's something to do with the DXGM codecs and the intro videos and/or the player included with the game to show them, i'm fairly certain. probably a conflict with something else, but i sure can't figure out what. i've tried loading the game with nothing else running except the bare minimum system processes required for Windows, and that doesn't help. i even renamed the intro video files so that they would not load when the game starts, as somebody else mentioned worked for them when they had this problem. that didn't help either.

so the question is... what do i do next? trying to install the latest Catalyst drivers for Windows ME is out, as they do not operate correctly in this system. i already tried it last night several times in a couple different ways as suggested by ATI the last time i was on the phone with them. nothing worked, i still get "fatal exception 0D at 0287:00001447" as Windows starts to load the display drivers every time i install anything higher than Catalyst 4.2, so i'm not at all sure how to proceed from here.

as i've mentioned before, both the beta and the demo played perfectly with my system and the drivers i am using. i didn't even get the black line problem that a number of people mentioned when using ATI cards with shadows enabled. what's different between the beta/demo, and retail versions at game start?

okay. i've done it the things you've suggested. and i've compared files between the two systems. i re-installed the demo, which works flawlessly. i do not understand why the demo works but the retail does not. there is something screwy somewhere.

anyway, i've scandisked, defragged, installed and re-installed... nothing seems to help. i do not understand this at all. i've noticed that there are differences in the game engine files as well as the movie files. what those differences actually are, i do not know. significant file size differences, though, particularly with the movies and engine.sga in the engine directory. in the root game directory a couple files are different too. including the initial executable files (w40k.exe). additionally, the contents of the various .ini files are also different.

right now i'm working on comparing the contents of the two different installations, seeing if changing files from one to another affects the game operation, and if so, how. having some fairly unpleasant results, too. from what i'm seeing so far, the biggest problem is in the initialization for the intro videos... but i don't know how they're different. the Demo initializes and the retail does not.

Perhaps it has to do with Securom, as that's the only significant difference I can think of between the two that early.

Out of curiosity, have you (or anyone else with this issue) tried calling the THQ tech support? They might have more information on it that I do. If you have called them, what did they say?

ANNOUNCEMENT!!! THE GAME HAS SUCCESSFULLY LOADED!

Perhaps it has to do with Securom, as that's the only significant difference I can think of between the two that early.

Out of curiosity, have you (or anyone else with this issue) tried calling the THQ tech support? They might have more information on it that I do. If you have called them, what did they say?

i have not called tech support. i was hoping to solve this without having to do that. the first thing they'll say, which is the first thing you said, is "install the latest ATI Catalyst drivers"... and then i'll have to go all through that all over again with *them*, and they could end up just saying "well, we only designed it to work with newer drivers and systems, so you're just going to have to upgrade or be out of luck".

however, i have temporarily solved my problem. i swapped the w40k.exe from the Demo into the Retail (after trying to swap everything else first), and now the game loads and runs fine. i haven't run any missions yet, i just played with the army painter and tried clicking various buttons. i also changed the game settings successfully and it re-loaded properly after each change. the point is, it loaded, so i wanted to report back here that at least i got that far with it. i did discover, however, that now i'm getting "$2701 No Key" when i try to go into multiplayer. that's not a good sign. i'm going to search the rest of the forums for anything on this new error, but as i said, i wanted to report in here first with my progress.

i'm thinking about re-installing the Beta and trying the w40k.exe executable from *that* in place of the Demo or Retail executables, and see if that solves the new problem. one thing at a time, but at least i can load the game now. WHEW!

Double Post

i neglected to mention... when using the Demo w49k.exe executable, i can't exit the game properly. for some reason, when i hit the exit button, it gives me the exit dialogue to make sure that's really what i want to do... so i click the "Accept" button, and nothing happens. i have to alt-tab out and kill the process. annoying, but not critical at this point. i'm just happy that i can get the bloody thing to load.

however, that and the $2701 No Key error appear to be the only problems. i'm about to re-install the Beta and see if that executable works any better than the Demo does for addressing my problems. will report back when i've done that.

i saw another thread in the bug reports about another user getting the $2701 No Key error, and he was told that this usually occurs when somebody installs the retail version over the demo in the same directory etc. i'm guessing it doesn't replace the executable with the retail version in that instance?

anyway, off i go to re-install the beta and try again.

Double Post

right, well, the Beta executable didn't work with the retail game. at all. i got an error about missing linked interface dll. didn't transcribe the whole error message. was enough just to find out that it didn't work. maybe i can swap some files into the beta install from the retail install. maybe not, but i'll have a go at it.

off i go, back into the trenches of software incompatibility warfare.

Check your pm mate :)

I have resolved the issue, to a point where I can atleast play offline. Can only wait for a patch, possibly supporting no cd or something

Admin Edit - Please contact THQ.

Note that no-cd cracks will not allow you to play online.

Could someone write down the solution here or help me by email ? The PM system seems to have some perturbations..
