There is a thread going on on this matter:

We are MANY that get this crash to desktop.. and I bet it has something to do with radeon drivers. Everyone Ive read that got this same crash uses a Radeon card and we all use lots of diff drive versions..
I even got exact same card as you do, wich driver are you using? I bet a new one ?

So now im also waiting for a patch from relic...

yup I've done that no effect

Davezor

As discussed in the other thread, im getting this exact problem.

The only thing ive found that seems to make it no crash, is turn sound acceleration COMPLETELY off, however this garbles the sound and makes the game pretty much unplayable (no voice cues etc.).

I played two skirmish games that way and no crashes, however it could just be co-incidental. The crashes are usually anywhere from 5 minutes - 2 hours.

The error message that the autosubmitter is trying to submit is on of a memory access violation, however ive run a couple of passes of microsoft memory tester and its been AOK.

I honestly just thing theres a bug in the code somewhere that wasnt tracked down and its causing some funky stuff.

Just as a curiosity, what motherboards are people using? Perhaps this is a sound driver issue however ive seen this problem with people using both onboard nforce sound and soundblaster audigies, so maybe not...

Completely different mobos.... in using an abit nf-7S using the onboard sound.

I tried removing some of my memory, still get the same error.

Im pretty sure we will just have to wait for a patch. I wonder if anyone from relic can comment if this is being looked at? Seems like its affecting a significant number of people.

I THINK its got something to do with SP 2. Because every one with an Athlon + ATI card is working fine for them.

:werd:

Davezor
26th Sep 04, 6:58 AM
I dont think its SP2. Users with both SP1 and 2 are reporting the same problems. Could potentially be a sound hardware acceleration issue, although its unverified at the moment. All I know is its really frustrating.

got full game now, still crashes.. any real solutions yet?

Davezor
26th Sep 04, 8:42 AM
Turn your sound hardware acceleration all the way off in dxdiag AND turn your sound completely off and let me know if it still crashes.

Seems to be an issue with the onboard soundchip of nforce 2 mobos (the realtek AC97 chipset). At least thats what the evidence is pointing to so far.

Double Post

Just tried some skirmish maps with hardware sound off, and still getting crashes, looks like thats not the fix.

Im pretty much out of ideas, hope someone can find a solution or relic releases a patch to address this, one or the other!

Wanna hear something funny?
The game was working fine for me on Thursday when I was using my old system:
Athlon XP 1800+
512 Megs of RAM
Radeon 9600 and
Soundblaster Live

I upgraded on Saturday (same system, same windows same mobo)
Athlon XP 3000+
1 Gig of ram
Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS

The moment I upgraded, the game stopped working.
The only thing that could cause it is.... TADAH! The Soundcard.

Yes I suspect the Sound acceleration is an issue. Hope a patch comes out soon.

(For the record I run an nForce2 motherboard with the AC97 onboard sound disabled. No issues with the old processor. Issue cropped up with new Proc)

Oh well... time to finish the Call of Duty add one while waiting for the patch....

Same problem here, Athlon XP 3200+ 1gig ram Ati X800pro SB512Live 4.9 catalysts SP2. And no, Uberjumper, we won't do that mate, remove a stick of ram? lol.. It's been a problem since the demo and I really hope they fix it soon, because the game is useless now and gathering dust.

The same problem. Crash on desktop with http://www.ancient-souls.ru/images/trouble.jpg.

Configuration:
AMD Athlon XP Barton 2500+@3200+
512 DDR dual channel
ATI RadeOn 9500@9700pro 128mb
Onboard sound

As I read in this topic, I can:
a) disable sound
b) disable dual channel
c) ...

Maybe SP2 or Windows? Maybe Radeon drivers? Maybe overclocking?
I know, that the same questions has been here, but plz - Help!

Dont tell us to remove a memory stick :).. wer using dual memory and thats a must for performance these days.. runing in nonedual just sux... and yes I think most of us have run memtest. Ive even run prime95 to stress test my cpu and mem. Ive tried everything.. its 100% stable on all other games/progs. cept this game.

Ive tried both my AC97 onboard audio and my old sb Live 5.1 card still doesnt help.

My guess is ATI problem with SOME cat versions... some works good some dont.. specialy not the new ones for sure.

Or as some think, the sound accelaration in some way.

COME one relic go trhou the codes!! :)
It´s so anoying..
Mostly I just get back to the desktop after 5-20min as most others and no error message or anything.. And pretty often when im loading a saved game before its done I get back do desktop with the autosend error message.

Hope a patch will come real soon..
Cause they should now have a pattern specially when they are working with this kind of things. We are giving them nice info here on what happens and what we use.

There is NOTHING wrong on my hardware OR software for SURE. Its in the programming for the game for SURE.

Hearing from a few users they have success with Omega drivers based on 4.8 catalysts.

I ran the beta on the same config using 4.8s and it worked ok, ive run the demo and full on 4.9s and am experiencing the crashing bug.

Lots of clutching at straws though, so far weve been through.

-) AMD issue?
-) Nforce issue? (sound card)

I tried the 4.7 and 4.8 catalysts, the game still crashes, after all crashes have been reported with GFX gpus as well. I'm not using the onboard soundcard. Fastwrite enable or disable makes no difference. Removing one stick of ram (yes I did that too after all) makes no difference. I don't have dual display. AMD issue..? No way, there are so many people with p4's that have crashing issues.

The Relic developers will be looking at the crashlogs that have been sent in, and working on a patch. There's at least 1 patch in the pipeline (for the English to non-english incompatibilities) and indications of another patch to follow that (fixes for SP campaign at least).

zIBiT

How soon we cat touch it?
But this patch can't fix out trouble?

Davezor
27th Sep 04, 9:40 AM
zIBIT,

Its probably going to be a few days at least. Generally a patch can just be hacked out and thrown up on the net. More than likely there will be (ironically enough) a testing procedure with THQ or Relic internally that it will have to pass through.

Its just to stop things like it accidently destroying your hard drive, kind of like the installer that was packaged with Myth 2 did (now THERES some gaming trivia for you!).

So id say once the error has been located (and even this might take a while as its such an intermittant problem), id will be a few days after that if not more until a fix appears. Also depending on how the company feels they may decide to sit on it and release it as part of a larger patch, it really just depends on how how many people it appears to be affecting.

At this stage we (the users) dont really have an idea of numbers outside of people posting on this board.

Infernal352
27th Sep 04, 9:45 AM
Well, even the numbers INSIDE these boards are substantial enough surely? I think that all we can do is just sit it out and wait... and in the meantime? *twiddles thumbs*

Here are my two cents of contribution to the crash club. Yes my WH DOW crashes constantly; crashes to desktop and sometimes crashes and reboots my system. Sometimes I play for an hour, sometimes five minutes between crashes, no patern to it. I believe there are two seperate causes for crashes, for sometimes I believe it is sound related and sometimes graphics. Because I did notice two types of crashes, to desktop and reboot crash. The reboot crash locks up the game w/ a funny sound before crashing. The crash to desktop the screen goes blank and quits to desktop. The problem in finding an answer when you have more than one crash increases exponentially with the different causes of crashes due to the combination of fixes one has to find. One may find the fix for the sound related crash but never know if the computer crashes due to something else. I believe it is a hopless situation but if there are enough people trying to guess at finding a solution through trial and error the odds of finding a solution increases. As they say, if you sit a monkey in front of a typewriter, with limitless time constraint, he will eventually write Romeo and Juliet.
Here are my system specs if anyone is trying to find a common thread.

-P4 2.6 Mhz on a P4 848p Neo MSI motherboard not overclocked
-512 Mb ram
-Nvidia FX 5200, 128 Mb

Did you get the latest drivers for your motherboard? Have you tried disabling the sound card to rule it out?

Yes I get the latest drivers/bios for my motherboard.
Also tried 3 diff cats for my vid card.

And yes Ive used 2 diff soundscards + disabled them completely. and -nosound.

Nothing really works..

Now ive been trying in 3 days.. only trial and error every single options. and then I mean EVERYTHING.. now I have to give up even im not someone that gives up..

Thou its so darn sad that all my friends that I suggest to buy this great game buys it and they can all play without a problem.. even now my brother... And I got a brand new system brand new os install and everything.. and no crap on my hd only dow really... and some other games such doom3 and warcraft3 they both works 100% stable.

There MUST be a leak in the programming somewhere and I really wish the dev team is working hard 24 hours a day on this anoying bug. And as you know Im not alone with this exact same crash to desktop without error msgs.

Please relic/THQ respond and tell me some good news now after all hours of testing ive done!

Waiting for you to give me the posibility to play this great game with my friends!

Thanks alot for any repsonce!

I think it's ridiculous that we are being asked to take out sticks of ram, reinstall mobo and gfx drivers when this is obviously a problem with the software and a result of some lazy programming. I bought dawn of war the other day and get random crashes to the desktop all the time. I cant play it because of the constant crashing, and its gonna be uninstalled and taken back to the store if a patch isnt released soon.

Heres my system specs,my rig is stable and runs d3,farcry,ut2004 and many other games with no problems whatsoever.

athlon 64 3200
gigabyte k8vnxp mobo
BBATI X800 pro (stock)
1gb of crucial ballistix cas2 pc3200
on board sound
catalyst 4.9s
latest mobo drivers

Apart from the constant crashing, its a good game. Hurry up and get a damned patch out plz

Please explain to me why some configurations the same or similar to yours work perfectly fine if it's a coding problem. If the code was broken, it would crash on everyone's system.

What's that? PC Games have serious problems with the gajillion possible hardware, sofware, driver, and user combinations making complete hardware and software compatibility testing completely impossible? You don't say!

Post your warnings.log and dxdiag.txt file so we can have a look at them. Also, some people have reported success doing any of the following.

Adjusting AGP aperture to the same as their video card memory.
Running the game with the graphics options recommended by the graphicsconfig.exe
Eliminating heat issues
upgrading power supplies to account for their hardware being underpowered by their existing PSU
Re-installing the game.
etc etc

Really I agree on your statement..
Thou its not really a problem on our side I think..
Im an advanced user and have really no problems with my computers.. It crashes on 1 of my computers and runs fine on 5 of my others.. thou the one it crashes on is my newest and fastest comp.. with the card X800XT PE that many other have problems with it seems.. the newer and faster ur comp ios the higher chanse you get the crash to desktop it seem.

However I see a common issue on all my computers when playing dow. Suddenly I can see a artifect a black line from a tower or so that very fast blinks a line trhou the whole screen. That only comes when someone have overclocked your vga card and then you usualy get this.
Thou I run everything in stock and with exelent cooling so its not to hot actually. I really think the programming aint optimized for these kinds of computers and need to be worked on. I have really no diff on my computers in general thou when it comes to the X800XT PE card instead of 9800 pro cards. I run same os and apps and driver versions on all my comps.

The dev team really need looking trhou this code again.
I cant POSSIBLE try any other drivers, agp apeture size, os, mem modules, sound cards, agp drivers, chipset drivers, cat drivers, omega drivers, dna drivers, safe settings, -nosound try, sp1, sp2, fast write off, agp 0x, 4x, 8x, tried dx9b, 9c, closed ALL aps in background reinstalling the game, lowering ram timings.

As you can see I have done more than possible.. there is no other way to try to run this game now on my computer.

So it´s really a task for the dev team and not us when it comes to this famous crash to desktop without an error bug.

ok,fair enough. ive got a thermaltake 560w psu with excellent rails. Im not gonna run the game at low detail when my rig is capable of playing at maxxed out settings. There are no heat issues- card at stock, case temp of 25c.I wont mess with agp aperture as that will most likely make the game slower.cant post warning logs right now as im at a uni pc....

EDIT - Loads and loads and loads of people seem to be having constant crashes to desktop,so it cant be all my rig's fault :bandit:

A game developer has a duty to fully test and debug games before they are released,i know its probably not your fault that relic cut corners, but its unfair to pass the buck to the consumer, saying its their pc's fault.

Well said, but falling on deaf ears.

I´ll give em a week, then I´ll send back my copy of dawn of war, and wait for battle for middle earth instead.. I bet everything on that wont crash me to desktop ;P

Did relic not test the game on X800 cards intel amd ati geforce cards very well ??? Should have wait on the release.. when the same bug was in the beta.

Nah I dont want to sound rude but something MUST happen here youll loose lots of publicity and gamers!

I really like this game and want to play it badly.. but I wont buy another computer just to play this game.
And its not on our side it failor.. its in the game.

So please release a patch that fixes it within this week or there will be atleast 1 less gamer for dow.

Thanks!

Ok guys, ive been watching this topic for quite some time now, simply because I have the same problem.

Ive contacted THQ tech support twice now (By Phone)... here's the low down:

First Call:

Took all system details (Satisfied)
Took all driver details (Satisfied)

Problem: Crashing to desktop after unspecified length of time

Problem situation: And I quote 'Thats funny, your the first person to call us, having this problem

Solutions tried: Drivers, Bios.
Solutions suggested: Move soundcard 1 PCI slot away from AGP slot.

END

Call 2 (3 days later, spoke to same person):

Problem: Crashing to Desktop after unspecified length of time.
Solutions tried: Move SoundCard.

Problem situation: Since your previous call, we have recieved numerous calls with the same problem. 99% of the calls are from NON-American customers. Appears to be a problem with game compatibilty with Video Card manufacturers from outside the USA, since, for instance, Nvidia DONT 'MANUFACTURE' VID CARDS, thay get other people, like 'Mentor' to make the cards for them, with Nvidia technology.

THQ are responding to this with a non-US patch, ETA: Unknown.

Possible temporary solution (until patch):
UNDER, not OVER, UNDERclock your videocard by 5/10mhz.
This should improve stability ALOT until the patch is realsed, then you may return clock values to normal.

Hope this help, see ya on the battlefield!

Perhaps Relic or THQ should be making a statement so as to put people at ease, but I think we all know they'd love nothing more than to kill this problem and have the patch come out tomorrow. No one here knows why it's constantly crashing to the desktop, I'd imagine THQ not encountering such problems before their release. I personally did not experience any crash beyond those caused by memory leak back in beta which should've been fixed, but the demo did crash on me the few times I played it. It's not all that uncommon to have ATi or nvidia release new drivers sets that fixes problems with new games coming out, and if the problem is with certain combination of soundcard or chipset drivers which doesn't get updated all that often depending on the make, Relic/THQ would have to work very closely with those companies and THAT takes time too. Of course 'be patient' isn't going to cut it for some of you, but if dual channel ram is a problem and it's not even something an application running on the OS should be able to see, I doubt Relic could do anything to fix stuff like that on their own.

This doesnt sound good.
They have never heard of it when you first rang em??
Thats crazy.. why dont they check these forums?!?!?!?! Then they should see its a HUGE problem.

If they have not fixed it till friday then we will send back our 121 copies of dow. They should never released the game yet.

And I really think its sad that they have not read about this huge problem and tell us whats going on and if they are working on it.. if they know what is causing it or ANYTHING.

yes, these forums are the official forums, but they're also only fan run, and while the relic folks do drop by here and post (the folks with Relic avatars), it's not for official help.

The official support you should be looking for is in the readme.txt or your manual.

Relic do not provide ANY technical support for DoW.
THQ provides all the support, and they have their OWN forum.

But yes, in order to make them aware of things like this faster, calling them is the best method.

Well, what you guys could do is see if you can grab a few replays off somebody and then just do the regular reboot, go into dow and view the replay. Dont do much while the thing is playing and see if it still crashes and if it does, if you can duplicate the crash at a certain spot.

SecuRom is one of the suspects in my mind currently because of stuff like trigger functions that they let the publisher place to randomly check for proper cds etc. Whether or not this is a problem only relic knows :P

Just thought I'd throw my two peneth worth into the mix as well, as everyone else seems to be running WinXP, and I'm still on Win2K and geting teh same problems - crash times vary from 5 - 10 mins play time, or sometimes in the opening movie!
Running:

AMD Athlon XP2000+
ASRock K7VM2 mobo
256mb DDR PC2100 ram (1 stick)
GeForce FX5200 128mb gfx card.

gfx aperture is set at 64mb, as thats the max mobo will go to
latest (afaik, installed 2 days ago from relevant sites) drivers

upped to the 1.01 patch, but no effect at all ( though that's only summat to do with languages on MP games if I'm right)

Just praying Relic/THQ pull some serious fingers out and sort it out quick!

Same thing for me, I increased AGP aperture, reinstalled DoW, updated all drivers, updated bios etc and it takes a little longer to crash now.

Ive just tried something new, I uninstalled the game, TOTALLY, inculding deleting profiles and the actuall installation directory.

I then rolled back ALL my drivers to the original.

I then updated all the drivers again and reinstalled DoW.

After this, I played a little 'test' game...

8 Player Free for all with 7 computers on HARD difficulty (So they would build ALOT) on map 'Penal Colony'

Game lasted 1 hour and 10 minutes without even the usuall 'hints' at crashing (ie slight pauses, wierd sounds etc)

I'll keep you posted on if it crashes in the future.

Put all CD's back in the box, took box with the reciept back to EB Games.
Got refund.
No more problem!
Seriously, the lack of a patch for this problem two weeks after the games release is entirely unacceptable. The game should never have been released in this buggy state.
Plus the lack of any seeming haste from Relic and THQ to address this problem leads me to rhink they really don't care...

Well, thats your choice to be perfectly honest.

Please feel free not to buy the game when its a perfect masterpiece.

Another thing, NO game comes without flaws, this is perfectly acceptable, just because they dont appear to be very vocal about their plans or intentions to combat the problems, does not mean they dont have any.

Id like to see ANYONE in here make a game of this calibre and NOT have flaws in it, and im sure that if you did, you would not appreciate people throwing away your game like a piece of garbage.

I urge all true gamers/fans to hold out, life will be sweet soon.

Anyone tried Older video card drivers?
I'd just spent the weekend in grief trying nearly everything
i'd read in this forum.
The game would lock up consistanly varying from 5min to 1/2 an hour
without a CTD or error log resulting in a reboot every time.

Specs:
Pentium4 2.4Ghz
Asus P4S8X-X mobo
Powercolour Radeon 9600XT 256
1Gig Ram:1x512 DDR333 & 1x512 DDR400
Enermax 470W PSU
Windows 2k prof SP4
DirectX ver 9.0c

Tried updating the bios, installing latest mobo AGP drivers.... no change.
Increased AGP aperature and memory size in bios, well tried nearly every available combination....still crashed.
Ran microsoft memory tester overnight and it ran 14 passes without a hitch.....game still crashed.
Rolled back to Catalyst 4.2 drivers and hoorah, played for 7 hours without a problem.

Don't know how it's affected my other games if at all but at least I can now play DOW for longer than 5 minutes without having to restart my machine.

Hi Guys,

i have the same problem, game crashes to desktop after an unspecified amount of time. Anything from 5 mins. to 2 hours.
Bug Report comes up, always showing an:

[...]
W40k.exe caused an Access Violation in module W40k.exe at 001b:0049c07a.
[...]
Read from location ffc7b1cc caused an access violation.
[...]
Stack dump:
Exception encountered during stack dump.

It's always the W40K.EXE causing an Access Violation mostly in W40K.EXE but sometimes in other files, like:

[...]
W40k.exe caused an Access Violation in module userinterface.dll at 001b:052a353b.
[...]
Read from location ff2b46a0 caused an access violation.
[...]
Stack dump:
Exception encountered during stack dump.

NO other game crashes.
My system is perfectly stable and not overclocked.
I tested the memory = No problems
Tried 2 different MOBO drivers = did not work
Tried my Soundblaster Live 5.1 and the Onboard Realtek AC97 Sound with older and the newest drivers =did not work
I have a Geforce 4 TI4200, tried older and the newest 60.77 drivers = didn't change anything.

I also experienced, that after DOW crashes, my Mozilla crashed, too. Until now, I could not replicate the error, but will try.
It seems, that with an "Exception encountered during stack dump", they may have produced a memory leak within their code.
It also seems, that DOW crashes more easily, if it is started a second time, e.g. Play DOW without crash, exit, mail, surf write etc. Play DOW = Crash, which would contribute to this theory.

But why do then not all games crash?

1st Idea:
Possibly, this memory leak is only produced with certain hardware/ and or drivers.

2nd Idea:
With Neverwinter Nights, Bioware had the problem, that ONE factory used malfunctional medias, while all other worked fine, so the CD's could eventually break, if they were used in very fast CD-drives. So obviously the games can be produced in different factories. Maybe the CDs from one factory either were produced with a flaw or recieved a flawed, false copy of the Master CD, maybe with an older .exe or soemthing like that.

Question to Relic: Is there any possible way, we can track down the origin of our copies of the game to a certain factory?

To all others: Open up the data1.cab on the first DOW-CD with an archiver like WinZip. What is the file size and time stamp of your W40K.EXE? Mine is:
4.823.552 bytes
Modified: 2nd September 2004, 21:40 (09/02/2004)

Anyone with a friend who also owns the game, ever tried installing from his CDs? Will try that as soon as friend of mine has bought the game...

BTW.: I'm playing the german version of the game and I contacted THQ Support yesterday and the hotliner told me that he had not heard of this problem til then, so any german customers, plz call the support to make the problem more important for them.

Sys specs:
Athlon XP 2400+
1 GB DDR 266 RAM
Geforce TI 4200
Onboard Sound Realtek AC97

Hope there will be any fix for this soon, I love this game and would really like to play it without fearing for a crash...

My own experience would suggest that Idea1 is more likely. On my son's PC: Athlon 2400+, ATI9550, 768 RAM MSI 6712 mobo with Realtek sound it crashes - in just minutes. With mine: Athlon 1800+, ATI 9200, 1Gb RAM, SB 128, Abit KG7 mobo - It runs fine - 4-5 hours he played on it with no crash. Used same CD's on both machines.

Am in throes of adding SB and ATI 9200 to his PC to see what happens. Will post results in a day or two.
