Lately I've been upgrading to marine frag grenades as a stopgap before building the machine cult. It's a little expensive when your BO includes just one gen, but at that point I have maxed out pre-(whatever the tier 2 stronghold is called) tac squads.
My usage so far has been to either preemptively wax a unit that just enters the grenade radius or right before the unit closes to melee. It's a little expensive, but it's I think it's a reasonable edge when playing against races that break easily.
It also seems to work very well for knocking squads out of heavy cover.
Based on the animations and decal crater, I'm led to assume the grenade attack has a windup, am I right?
Furthermore, when the receiving squad is thrown asunder, are they still able to be damaged, or is "getting knocked onto your feet" an invincibility animation? If that's the case, throwing a grenade may prematurely bring the enemy unit into h2h.
Sorry I have no lab experimentation to go along with this post.
