View Full Version : Grenade mechanics/usage?

Lately I've been upgrading to marine frag grenades as a stopgap before building the machine cult. It's a little expensive when your BO includes just one gen, but at that point I have maxed out pre-(whatever the tier 2 stronghold is called) tac squads.

My usage so far has been to either preemptively wax a unit that just enters the grenade radius or right before the unit closes to melee. It's a little expensive, but it's I think it's a reasonable edge when playing against races that break easily.

It also seems to work very well for knocking squads out of heavy cover.

Based on the animations and decal crater, I'm led to assume the grenade attack has a windup, am I right?

Furthermore, when the receiving squad is thrown asunder, are they still able to be damaged, or is "getting knocked onto your feet" an invincibility animation? If that's the case, throwing a grenade may prematurely bring the enemy unit into h2h.

Sorry I have no lab experimentation to go along with this post.

Frags are always useful against orks and eldar who wear armour thats about as useless as loin cloths... Sure it wont kill them, but it does damage, knocks them down and lowers morale.

I'm not sure about the won't kill part. I once whacked two Banshees with a single stikkbomb.

They're also fun if your opponent is stupid enough to send a Hero into battle unattached.

I don't like the seemingly random placement of the grenade thrower, though. I've had times when a squad got spread out, and I couldn't hit a guy I wanted to paste with a grenade becasue the thrower was too far back.

i wouldnt exactly call sending a commander to fight unattached stupid.. It's actually a really good tactic to use...

but anyway on topic. Frags are nice, like you said to knock em out of cover. I've never had a problem shooting guys when they get knocked down, my marines keep unloading into em. It's a good way to stun em. Especially when the green wave comes at ya..

Plus you can have an unobservant opponent searching frantically for the whirlwind he thinks you've got offscreen :)
