What to focus on?

When facing a hero early (FC, Mek, FS, CL), what should I be focusing my attention on? The hero itself, or the squads supporting it? A hero takes a lot of fire to take out, but deals helluva damage.

Thus far, I've been focusing on the hero with a fair bit of success. However, my win ratio is still below 50%, so I shouldn't really talk...

Usually when I engage an enemy early on I've got a bit o backup.. But honestly the commander is key. if you 1v1 and both SM. Whoever's FC lives is going to have a HUGE advantage. But I try to keep it a little balanced out. Example I typically have FC, 2 tac marines, and 3 scout squads with snipers. FC and tac marines focus on enemies commander, while snipers demolish enemy infantry. It works surprisingly well since snipers kill in one shot usually. :D

Exactly you use units like snipers to work on the infantry. And put everything else including YOUR FC on the enemy one. Out of everygame I have played thus far I have always concentrated on taking out the enemy FC in a encounter. It is usually the most beneficial move because if you dont their FC will take out a good majority if not all of what you throw at it. This of course is at an early stage of a game.

Unless its a Farseer, you can usually just dance away from it while pounding their reinforcing squad. You will prevent more damage killing them off quickly than killing FC off slowly.
