Old Friend

Old Friend is a relatively tricky mission. You have to control your side of the map while the enemy hits you from four points of entry. We will use your starting point as south, with the left being south west and to the right being south east.

You start on a building. Use your tactical squad to cap the nearby SP. Build units to cap the other SPs, build LPs on them and crank out servitors.

On the east, don't go any farther then the ramp down. On the west, go to the south-west corner, advance north and cap those two SPs, put LPs and upgrade. Upgrade all your LPs to defend against the numerous Chaos incursions.

build some scouts and research infiltrate, then upgrade to monastery. infiltrate them out to the relic and screen the area, watching the enemy. Their key points of entry are the road north of the relic, and a road to the way right side that goes down into a depression, with the other side having a listening post. Send your infiltrated scout across to the other side and park him near the enemy's LP.

In the meantime, build tac squads and cap the relic. You will be contested. Mostly marines and eventually predators. Start by capping the relic, building a LP and placing HB turrets facing north. Upgrade them to missile, and add some regular HBs just in case.

To the northwest of the relic is another SP. Cap it, it leads to a small alpha legion outpost producing vehicles. Build HBs upgrade to missile, lead a tac marine force to clean out that outpost. There's a LP in the middle of that bridge when you're done. Take it, secure it and garrison it. Build turrets.

In the meantime, do the upgrades and building and stuff. Build predators for this mission. Upgrade turret to dual lascannon. Send a sizeable force to sweep the south-east side of the map. Eliminate all enemy LPs, cap all the SPs and probably build on them too.

Head to the area where there's a depression and a enemy LP on the other side. Stay on your side with a predator and a tac squad. To the west of that is a bridge. Reinforce that bridge too.

If you've been building up enough the enemy will send oblits to attack the relic area. Preds will come from the east so be ready.

Build lots of tac squads with plasma and MLs. I advanced on the eastern flank through the depression and the bridge area. Move slowly with preds and marines. Take out his LPs and use your scouts to spot ahead. The enemy has three bases on his side of the map. One center, one north-west and one north-east. Wiping them out means carefully capping each SP you can and putting a LP on it until you arrive at his bases. You can try to take them out one at a time. Isador is in the center one. Advance up the southern staircase to the top. Cap the relic and you'll see Isador come down. Kill him with massed firepower. Sweep the area, watching for LPs and heavy bolters. Kill everything. Send Predators or Dreads first.

Do this to the center base, kill everything. Do it to the west and east bases. If you're penetrating a base, lead with a Pred and some dreads. Remember there are some LPs and buildings scattered behind their main bases. Do not disperse your firepower too much-he will hit you if you disperse too much and slaughter many. You can disperse your dreads and preds though-not your infantry. They are too vulnerable.

By then it's just mopup. Sweep the whole map.

I did pretty much the same, except that the previous strat did not mention about the Winged Demon at the start of the game. The way I handle the Chaos hero is to place at least 2 turrets at the Northern stair of the Relic platform, and an SM squad with HBs. Then I just dance my FC around the platform such that the demon would be shot at, while he is going after my FC. (This is at Hard Level). I have only 1 Dread which guard the western bridge and did not have Predator yet at this stage when the winged demon attack my position.

Kill the incoming BT first, then cap every SP at your side but don't bother to build LPs(so you'll lose them, but dw,you won't need them).

Believe it or not,I just use 3 Marines(1 full Plasma,1 full Missile and 1 2 Plas+Miss) and 1 Scout to destroy HALF of Chaos base(left half to be exact).Just get units pumping from behind, prepare for serious turtling, while my 3 Marines and scouts to mop up anything from the far left bridge.Rather easy,Raptors and PSM dies quickly.I used such force to kill Isador before 4 Dreads drop in front of him:D

Then I got a much larger force with 1 T,2 LR,5 Dread and rest Marines to kill off everything else in Right map.Easy.

The last stage is very annoying.I have to search every enemy SP for Chaos Plasma plants, which seems to be unlimited. It pissed me off soooo much.

Ugh.Isador was killed, though he deserved it.If Relic can do much better on the details of movies then they should add some tears in the eyes for Garby, who will probably cried after he killed his old friend.:(:)

On insane I basically killed everything with 3 terminator squads with FC, Inquisitor and 1 apotecary attached and with a coupe of Predator to kill the Defilers..

check to see if you have overlooked an enemy LP. run around with scout squads. maybe even build a couple of hellfires and blind-bombard that one point you cannot reach (somewhere to the north west, there shouldn't be an enemy LP on it, but you never know.)
Sometimes an enemy unit is stuck somewhere.

As soon as I got a base established, I bounced out to take the nearest relic just so I had terminators as early as possible. I lost it after that as chaos try their best to take it back, but having the termies early made it that much easier to sweep the home side of the map. Once this side was secured I took it back again.

I have captured 99% of the points on the map (There is just this one I can't put my listening post on a high roof) . I have destroyed all the main bases, but the game won't let me finish the level.

I will be unhappy if it's just this lone Chaos lackey that is hiding in a corner that is preventing me from finishing the level!

Update: I finally finished the mission. There were two power plants located at the side of the map!

I don't think you have to capture all SPs, just cap both relics.(And destroy all enemy units ofc...)

normal difficulty...

basically fortify your side of the map heavily with turrets and fully upgraded LPs. then sweep thru the map with termies and dreads.

-your side of the map is initially pretty empty, you can start capping SPs, but don't go too far right, they have a big pile of enemies there.
-a big demon attacks you fairly early on. you can destroy it with the initial marines and heroes. if i remember correctly, i also had support from couple of turrets here.
-fortify SPs near the first relic heavily with several turrets, they will come under attack several times.
-fortify the far left bridge with fully upgraded LP and 5 turrets, enemy tries to cross it every once in a while, you have to hold this bridge. have couple of a servitors behind the turrets repairing and rebuilding them when needed.
-when you can, get loads of termies and dreads... pay a visit to lower right corner and cap all SPs here, i had a big fight around this area. an orbital strike works well here.
-go around the map to each SP and just destroy everything. you won't suffer much losses with only minimal troop coordination... think i only lost like 1-2 termies in total.
-the enemy will re-cap some of the SPs while you're doing this with small cultist\chaos marine squads, it's kind of hard to prevent, but it doesn't really matter either.

-when you think you've destroyed everything but the map won't end, the enemy has built some buildings somewhere in the map. search&destroy...

Yes, your biggest problem will be finding *all* the chaos buildings. I found this map to be easier than mission 9, or maybe I'm just getting better at the game. It was on this map that I finally found a use for AM's. Covering distances quickly and capping points helped my economy out early.

I found this level REALLY easy as the Bloodthirster never actually showed up. Think it's a glitch?

That aside, Toth's radio signals really are useful when it boils down to getting some Strike Cruisers to issue lance strikes on a Chaos swarm (I used one lance strike from Gabe to obliterate about three squads of Raptors, a Daemon Pit and knock Isador down to precisely 59 HP. Cue much swearing from me as I watched Isador proceed to kill both Toth and Gabe within ten seconds of each other...)

IMO using some Scouts or some SM as spotters, then hot drop DN will be better, since I used Toth and Garby to guard the base, and you can turtle.

I need some serious help on hard setting. No matter what I do, i get owned at my HQ by Chaos. It wouldn't be so bad except that I get hit from three sides all at once. By the time I get attacked I've managed to cap all SP to my west, but i do not upgrade and I never go north to the bridge. On the east side i only go as far as the SP, which i cap and upgrade, and add upgraded bolters.

I normally have one pred and one dread at HQ when the attack begins and i've surrounded the area with upgraded turrets. i normally have 3 squads of marines with either missiles or plasma guns. No matter what I do, I can't seem to fight back the amount of defilers and obliterators that walk into my HQ as well as the waves of chaos marines. Would taking the north bridge on the west side make any difference.
Any suggestions?

Playing this mission is almost like playing a Skirmish game, the only difference is that both sides have their own "Librarian".

It's good practice, I must say. The only part of this mission that I might consider to be annoying is when you have to search for non-Listening Post buildings. It wasted my time when I could just see what happens to Isador.

Note to self: Mark Oliver voice acted guys who die before the real ending.... Makaan dies before the final mission, Isador dies also before the final mission.

First of all, I am not a good DoW-player, but I have managed to get to Mission 10 (praise the Emperor!).
I've played all the previous missions on the easiest setting (normal?) and completed the objectives qiute easy (with a little help from reading the topics in this forum). But mission 10 is totally different. Here's what happened during the beginning of the mission (well during the first 30 minutes then, like I said, I'm not a good DoW-player ;)):

I captured the nearby strategic points, constructed LPs on them and built up my base. My plan was to get 10 Dreadnoughts, and then take the relic in front of my base so I could get Terminators. I guessed there would be fighting at the relic, so I wanted a relative strong army before I attacked.
But when I was building up my base, and the first Dread was about to roll out, the Bloodthirster attacked. The BT headed directly for my Force Commander, but he soon fell for the combined strenght of Gabriel, Toth and squad of Marines.

Before I started the mission I read this topic, so I knew that the BT would attack in the beginning. After that attack I thought that I could build up my force in peace, but I was wrong. Totally wrong.

Soon the west part of my base was attacked by Obliberators that seemed to spawn right there. I was also attacked by some Cultists and Chaos Marines, but they died easy due to my turrets.

By now I had about 4 Dreads and 3 Marine-squads together with some turrets defending my base. The enemy continued the assault on my base by sending in Obliberators and a Defiler together with some Chaos Marines against the defenses on the west side of my base. 1 Dread and a squad of Marines were doing quite well against that attack, but suddenly Toth came running in to action. He went CC with the Defiler, while the Olbiberators were shooting at him, and this resulted in one dead Toth. At the same moment a second Bloodthirster attacked.
"What the heck?!?" was my thought, but I managed to kill of the attacks with some losses.
I haven't continued the mission yet, I had to calm down after this. :P

Why is the beginning of this mission much harder compared to the previous missions?

I found that the best strat is to capture the relic as soon as possible. The Bloodthirster was no problem. I built three turrets and upgraded them. (While sending a marine squad out to capture some SP) I beat this mission rather easily with 2 dreads, a pred, a landraider, and about 8 marine squads. I didn't even know there were three bases and charged Isador. After you destroy his base its relatively easy. Although I played for another 30 mins searching for a freakin cultist.

Playing on insane, I teched, built termis, preds and dreads and rushed Isador's base. I destroyed the centre base. However, I had waited too long and soon found myself fending off swarms of defilers and possesed marines, with the occasional BT. I ended up losing every single SP (by then decayed) and my relic. Defending my base got boring pretty fast after that.

So I just restarted and tried a more aggressive strategy. Built lots of servitors and scouts, capped my half of the map. Meanwhile I got a handful marines and harassed Isador's forces. With so much resources I started churning out marines and (when available) lascannon preds. Equipped everyone with MLs, and rushed Isador's base. This time I only gave the AI time to use the original BT against me, and the base fell in a matter of minutes.

By Kalimac: "At the same moment a second Bloodthirster attacked."

Well it's a little off topic, but on Insane difficulty I encountered 3-4!!! Bloodthirsters at a time. I mean there were 3-4 on the field of battle at the SAME time.

Now on topic. On normal difficulty the mission is not too hard it's just a bit long. I started very cautiously at the fist time. I thought that Chaos is all over the place so I didn't go out of my base for a long time. However, you shouldn't do that! Just have 2-3 scouts at the beggining and spread out as fast as you can on your side of the bridge. This will get the amounts of requsition you need. Build LP on any points you capture if you want. Some of them will be destroyed. but I think they worth the investment (and they slow Chaos down when they want to assault your base). Othe then that it's just similar to a normal skirmish map (unfortunately, the other SP maps aren't very different from skirmish, too :( ). Cheers, D-coy :D

There are two additional Campaigns for Winter Assault: the Order and the Disorder campaigns, with 5 missions each, and the last mission being race specific.

The WA campaign comes with the x-pack.
As for your question: No, there aren't any other campaigns for DoW.
Though there are custom campaign being made for WA.

It's not a mod, its the expansion. Expansion as in, you go to a store and buy it. Go to your local video game store, you can pick it up for ~$30.

I've just bought the game recently, let's just say I've been busy keeping my own arse outta the fire as to why it's taken me 2 years after being a beta tester of the game, to actually purchase and aquire the game.

First off, the mission before this one is confusing as can be, and utterly disrupts the gameplay flow of the campaign itself. Hey, bite me, I've been a game master of 40k for 17 years... IE that means I dont bullshit.

Secondly, I was admittedly unsure what to do here, I wander out and go grabbing CPs asap like a nutter cause, hell I'm marines right, thats what I do... only to run smack into a BT (bloodthirster) that requires a minimum of 4 squads and a fifth melee to deal with... all the while I get to begin with a whopping 1000 res....

Excuse the shit outta me arsehole, but you dont put me up against a demon without enough res to fight it.

So yea I eat the thing with micro management (god I hated warcrap 3 for that shit) and here I am again being besest upon all sides by random off map attacks...

Shortly after that all I am able to do is keep 2 squads alive. I cannot even keep a CP long enough to get another squad. I was playing on "hard". I switched and redid everything on "Normal".... same crap. Its almost like I installed the 1.41 patch and made the game impossible. God I hated the end of Warcrap3 because of how lamly ghey it got. This reminds me of it. "oh since you've made it this fare we're gonna ghey you to death since we have no imagination or the cash to buy some."

Look, if you want to kick my ass with bullshit, just say so.

After all these years, all these games (I'm a game producer, designer, and software programmer/developer) I've finally come to one conclusion, I love a good game where I can stumble in, do my thing, and feel like "YEAAAARRGGG" I GOT THAT HILL!!!" Know what I mean?

Number one problem of all the MMO's (homo's for short) is the fact that they simply suck your life away with the PROMISE of GAMEPLAY.

DOW HAS GAMEPLAY. To the max. Its the last current game TODAY that freaking has it. The only problem I have, is this last mission. You really think I'm going to do some step by step "put your toe here, fart here, snub your nose in this direction, and maybe you're ok" Is gameplay?

Ok, so I apologize. Facts are this game rocks. I've waited nearly 20 years to be able to see an 8 foot powered armoured marine fire HE rounds into every thing he sees. HEY, I OWN SPACE HULK the first game. :P

My point is this, after all the patches and updates, this mission still blows arse. The balance is shiete on it. Plain and simple.

Everything else, you guys have busted your arses for 2 years after the fact to appease balance issues, as well as tolerated mods and betas that claim better...
The FIRST W40k Book was crap, so was the second, the 3rd was working, the 4th is realisitc...

GAMESWORKSHOP and RELIC along together, obviously you desire the same thing I do, GAMEPLAY.

End of the day... its what makes the wallet open. I hate it too, but hey, my wallet's bigger than yours.

Ok you're new here so I am going to cut you some slack. At first read I thought your post was a rant, so in the future aking nicely and a bit more structured then trying to slide in some personal views on the game when asking for help would be advised.

The force commander can easily take down a blood thirster on his own and even easier with some help. Your best bet is to build some dreads and plasma marines as this can handle about anything but vehicles. Equiping some missile marines will help you cope with vehicles. Simply take your time and slowly expand or expand and cover your hide. Building turrets is a waste of resources better spent on more troops. The game is quite simple but it takes some getting used to.

The fact is that if you knwo what you are doing and have played a few dozen games against the AI or other humans the level itself is just some careful planning reqired and a level head and some good positioning.

This is a generalistic answer for a specific answer read the second post in this thread for a good explanation of how to make this mission a bit easier.

Lost my first game of the campaign. Was okay until I moved out to rtake the relic, and a couple of the adjacent points.

Suddenly got rushed from all sides.

Perhaps I will turtle with just the three points until I have a full strength force next time, assuming they dont rush anyway.

Looks like Bloodthirsters will be sent regardless

Tried this again, by building up and then attacking. Almost forced them back from beyond the bridges, but had to spread my forces too thin trying to take and hold the numerous points.

Insane really is insane. The jump in difficualty on this level is hyge, being attacked by multiple Bloodthirsters on several fronts isnt pretty

Gonna play this on easy next.

Insane level

Rush your heroes over the bridge to the center of the map. Let them scare of wandering chaos squads, but don't pursue them to far. This will keep your 3 chaos opponents from expanding.

Note: don't cap the relic.

Cap the 1ste SP with your SM and let you servitor build a generator. Build 3 squads of scouts and sent them west, southeast and east. The SM's go northwest until they've capped the SP on the western bridge and then join your heroes in their forward defence (with 2, later 4 plasmas).

Meanwhile, build 3 servitors and let them follow the squads, building LPs. Build as many generators as you can without interfering with the LP builds. This way you can cap all the SP on your side and the first 6 SPs on the chaos side. The most eastern one of those needs to be upgraded to heavy and supported by a squad of SM or additional turrets.

Use a squad of scouts to cap the relic and 2 squads of scouts to keep harassing wandering chaos squads (shoot once and run away). The SM's and your heroes will scare the pursuing chaos squads away.

After all this conquering it's time to start teching up and eliminate the chaos bases. I started with the northeastern one. A 2nd squad of SM (with 4 rockets) and your heroes will take some time. Reinforce them with a 3rd squad of SM (plasma) and 2 dreads (I build a Machine cult just behind the most Northern LP).

Eventually your vandalism will be answered by the Big Deamon. Just run around with the hero he's targetting, while the rest of your army wear him down (yes it's lame, but exploit your opponents weaknesses even if that weakness is a weak AI).

By this time I build terminators to finish of the Northeastern base and to make a start with the central base. Meanwhile, build predators to deal with the western base.
