You can only do this from outside the game, it has been discussed in the mod section, and there are at least two editors to edit unit formations. Use search function in the mod forum to find out more about it. :)

Is there a way to get whole squads in formation, not just the individual troops in a squad like J23 referred to? Like, for instance if I had 2 space marine squads and 3 assault marine squads, could I set them up so the assaults were in the front and the regulars in the back? Right now, it almost seems like they stay in the arrangement they were in when I hotkeyed them, which doesn't make any tactical sense in most cases, so I wind up with assault marines standing back from battle, and the space marines up in melee range and with weird spaces between them when I move mixed groups into an area.

Set up your formations before you move them. Hasn't failed for me as yet.

S= SM
A= AM
F=FC

SSS
AA
F

Select them all, assign to hotkey then move em out. Don't forget the stace buttons. Set to AM's and FC to CC, and your SM's to Ranged.

After battles or when regrouping, move the guys around again. Then again, in any fight, I tend to do a lot of micro in critical fights to get the best benefit from terrain,as well as squad loadout (plasma, missle launchers, flamethrowers, etc...)

Seems to me that to many people dicount the use of terrain. Always, always, always, get your guys into cover, and keep the enemy pinned out in the open. I prefer using cover as a chokepoint instead of a "terrain" chokepoint like a valley or small path. Don't need much room to fire a gun.
