a friend of mine (he hasn't a modem) has tried homeworld but there is a problem:
he can view all the videos and cutscenes, but there's no voice sound, only background music... also there is no subtitles (it's a spanish version so we need subtitles to understand it).
i have tried the game in 4 other computers and it works, so the cd isn't damaged.
if anybody knows how to fix this problem, please tell.

There's two command line switches you can try... /waveout and /dsoundCOOP. The Master Troubleshooting List at the top has a bunch of help for adding command line switches.
Please post his system spec (see the MTL Link at the top of this forum for the format) if they don't work.
Also, you could try the english sound files (if you understand english). They can be downloaded from here (http://www.3ddownloads.com/?directory=/relicnews/Speech/).
Also, the sound file could be corrupt, and you may need to just copy it off the CD and into the HW directory.

the voices hasn't been translated in the spanish version, so they remain in english.
the only thing my friend needs is the text, the subtitles, because even if he could hear the voices, he wouldn't be able to understand them...
anyway, thanks for the help

Ok... so you can hear the english words and see the english text for the Cutscenes and Movies?
And you can only hear background music when actually playing the game? No voices at all? I don't think there are subtitles for the actual combat sequences.... maybe Murph can answer that.
Try changing ports for his speakers or fiddling with his sound settings in the options (I think you can change to 4 speakers).

ok i'll explain it better:
-When playing the videos between different levels (pre-rendered videos made with bink&smacker), in the spanish version there should be background music, english voices, and spanish subtitles.
In my friends computer: videos can be seen, background music is played, english voices aren't played, spanish subtitles aren't displayed.
-When playing the cutscenes made with the in-game engine (not rendered videos), background music, sounds, english voices and spanish subtitles should be heard.
My friend can see the cutscenes, he can hear sounds and background music, but he can't see spanish subtitles and can't hear english voices.
-When playing the game, that is, moving ships, killing other ships, etc., background music, sounds, and some voices in english (like "group 4 destroyed") should be heard.
My friend can hear background music, hear sounds, and... i can't remember if he can hear the voices :/
the main thing he needs is the spanish subtitles, because he needs them to understand what he has to do, and why he must do it.

K.... what I suggest you do, is uninstall the game completely... (delete the directory it was installed too).
Then, re-install, and play Homeworld. See if he gets subtitles. If he does or doesn't, install the latest patch and see if he gets subtitles.
Let us know what happens pls!
