It's driving me mad, I have tried several of ATI's drivers, tried leaving the side off the PC, I have reduced the quality of the graphics; sometimes things are fine, other times like today it crashes three times, once when i am just about to win!

Windows XP, 2400 Intel, 9600pro, 1 gig of ram.

Sometimes it locks up, screenfreeze, other times th emonitor switches off and then the Pc reboots a minute or so later, most frequent it freezes goes back to desktop says something about VPU recovery and then I'm able to resume playing, albeit losing 10 secs in the middle!

I got up to 1329, and have just lost 20+ points, in all I must have lost 30-40 games this way, getting really fed up with it.

Please any advice?

Sorry Mo - not so technical accomplished, might take me a while as I'm not sure how to get these things, will investigate. Have turned off fast write, reinstalled ATIs latest driver 6.14.10.6505 31/11/04 (I previously rolled back to earlier ones to see if the problem was there), changed AGP to X4 and turned off VPU recovery. Not able top play at the mo so don't know what difference this will make?

Will try and get what you ask, though will it still help bearing in mind th eabove changes?

Your crashes sound like they are heat-related, but you did say you already took off the side panel on your case - any noticable difference there?
Did you try all the stuff in this thread: http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=51979 ?

What kind of power supply do you have?

360watt PSU. Side off or graphics turned down makes little difference, all fans seem to be working, though very dusty inside. I have an ASUS probe that monitors certain temps, have started recording a log there.

try clearing out all that dust (but be careful obviously). Tell us what temperature readings you get whilst playing. Id say theres a good chance that its your Radeon overheating (we get reports of this a lot) - taking the side off and pointing a desk fan in there can cool it down a lot and if the situation improves we'll know that heat was the cause. To fix it more permanently you'll have to take the computer to a computer store and ask their advice on additional cooling.

Logged temp which seems to have been level, showed no spike in the game crash? CPU 40/104 MB 36/96.

I really would like to resolve this, as every third game I am losing by default

Froze this time, heard the MB beep once, had to hard reboot, lost another game! Checked temp it gradually rose to 58, could this really be it? Will a chassis fan help?

Hm, if it tries to create a bug report it's usually not an overheat. OK, have you tried the RAM switch trick?

Thanks so much for the help guys, this game is brilliant and I have actually persuaded 6 people to by it, so I hope you feel the investment is worth it!

RAM trick, you got me there, I have 2x256 and 1x512, do you mean I should swap them over?

The problem is the bug is so intermitent (sp?) normally when I'm winning!

Try dropping to either the 2 256 Sticks, or the 1 512 stick. If one combo still crashes, switch to the other.

Could take me a while to mess with the RAM. Is it safe to discount the graphics card or onboard sound as the problem? I have always found it difficult to update the soundcard CMI9739A, and have thought about updating it if it was possible this was the problem. I get intermittent crashes with HL2 as well.

Intermittent Crashes in more than one program implies a common denominator, likely RAM, power supply, etc.

Oblig, that sounds a lot like faulty RAM. Note: even if the memcheck comes up clean, try it.
RAM is very straightforward to install. Just make sure to ground yourself before touching it. Then press down on the little latches at the ends, and the stick will pop right out.
To stick it back in, just lower it into the bank vertically and apply a bit of pressure. It's impossible to put it in the wrong way, it will only fit in one way.

Just wanted to say thanks to you guys ('n gals?)

I have 2X256 2100 in slote 1 and 2 and a few months ago bought a 512 2100 from a friend. Since then probs in HLs and DOW, hadn't made th econnection as I only started playing the games at Christmas. DOH!


Anyway... Took out the 512 and bingo no probs for 48 hours. Did some swapping with the wife's PC and put three 256 in mine and first game 'DOW has encountereed a problem' ... So put the512x in slot i and 256x2 in slots 2 & 3 - played one game and all is fine.

So thanks I am getting there, hoping getting the configuration right may resolve it though it may be the slot or the ram. The MB bumf says and combo should be ok - we shall see.

Anyway thanks for all your help - really is appreciated.

Thanks again all - the problem is fixed, no crashes since I moved the RAM around - so for those of you who are dubious and ahving the same problem just putting the RAM in different slots, same RAM, same slots just different order, it worked.
