I'm tryin to re-install HW but I keep getting an "i/o error".
I've been running for some time with no probs but recently it started locking up. After freeing up some H/D memory it still locked up so I decided to re-install it with the resulting above prob ...
Any help would be appreciated...

Knucles:

Can you copy the entire CD to a directory on your hard drive, then run the setup from there?

If you need more help, please post in the bug submission forum.

Hey, I got an I/O error too.

It was on the movie 01/02 file.

Ask someone to give you the file that causes the error, and do what Uber said.

Hey! Ive just recently had this problem too. It got the I/O error on the .big file so i aborted and deleted everything homeworld from windows explorer. After several rounds of this the game wouldn't even begin instaling before i got the error message. I would really appreciate any info on what jackassed thing is causing this.

since the bug submission forum is being ignored i am going to ask for assistance here till it gets hyperspaced. the problem is that when i try to install homeworld i get an I/O transfer error or something. originally it began while installing homeworld.big, then, after repeated wipes and reinstalls it failed altogether in installing anything. see "instal probs" in the bug submission forum for more info and several others who have also had this problem. i want to play homeworld again!

well, i've tried to install several more times and so far ive gotten 2 random fatal errors and an invalid hw cd notification.

i think you may be right, higaran. do you know how i can get another. someone said something about sending $5 and the disk to sierra to aquire a new one.

in the first time our ancestors installed the patch from the x-tra game-of-the-year-edition cd....

although i fail to see the significance.

why on earth would i pay double the price when all i need is the cd? i believe i posess the patience to wait for mail.

Yea you can probably get a used one for less than $10. Just look arond and you can probably find it.

so you think it's a definite file 13 on the disk? it has some minor LOOKING scratches on it but i didn't think they were that bad, oh well.

Ok, do you have problem with any other disks in that drive. If so, then its the drive, if not its the disk.

I dunno - CD's are hard to frig up.

I'd give the CD to a friend and see if it's bad in his/her drive.

I'd also suggest cleaning your CD and your drive. Might need it if you've been playing Homeworld to death. :)

higaran: since losing homeworld so unexpectedly i havent had the spirit to play anything else, but i'll attempt it.

retro: ill try that, but i did clean the cd with a "pro-wipe". i certainly have been playing it alot, it never left my drive.

Several possibilities:

1. Disc is scratched/damaged

replace by contacting Sierra

2. CD RW or DVD drive is being picky due to copy protection shiznit in the HW CD

Use a CD ROM drive (preferred) OR
copy entire installer to the hard drive and install from the disc. Use a no-cd crack (you will not be able to play in WON)
If you don't have a spare CD ROM drive and want to play in WON. Write to Sierra and tell them they should pick a better copy protection scheme.

3. Drive is encountering read errors that it can't correct. Might be a CD problem, most likely a flakey drive problem.

Reduce the read ahead of the drive to no read ahead. Turn off DMA for it too.

not to worry folks, it's not the cd. i don't think it is at least. my comp has been rebelling aginst me as of late and i am prepared to unleash swift and brutal retaliation upon this insurgence. i'm going to reboot my entire system (don't worry, i saved all of my hw pics). funny thing happened though, the guy at staples had a look at the cd and tried to install it on one of their display comps and it wouldn't install because it required "a 16 bit sound system" or something. ?

Something that has helped me in the past is simply copying all of the files off of the CD onto the computer's hard drive and attempting to install from there. I don't know what level of success you will have with Homeworld using this method, but it has helped me for some other games.

Can a moderator from this forum please move this thread back into bug submission so I can merge the two?

Thank you.

SpacePutz:

As I already mentioned to knucles (and Preacher's re-iterated), please try copying the entire CD to your drive, then install from there.

If it fails copying the HW_Big file, then your CD Rom or CD drive is messed upo. You can confirm this by finding another CD and trying to copy it to the HDD. Baring the unlikely event that a second CD is damaged as welll, this should help identify where the problem lies.

Please take note of last statement in last post:

Reduce the read ahead of the drive to no read ahead. Turn off DMA for it too.

This has solved many CD ROM problems for me and people I know.
